So I came across something a long time ago that I meant to share. Then I forgot. I'm sure this isn't new to anyone. But I found that the Snowspeeder was at one time going to be a refitted Y-wing cockpit module. How cool is that!?

I watched star wars (A New Hope DVD version) for the first time today to see what all the hoopla was about.
Too young to remember it in the theatre, I do remember going to see Return of the Jedi but don't remember anything about it and that'll probably be my next watch.
Just sayin...

Something I was thinking of, that when it comes to the Special Editions (1997, DVD or Bluray versions), most will regard them as the inferior version to the original theater or VHS ones. Is there anyone here that prefers the SE versions? ....OR, perhaps finds a scene or even certain shot they think is better in the SE from any if the 3 movies. Or maybe find both to be good and hard to decide.
Off the top of my head, I think of the X-wings about to take on the death star in Hope.

I like the lined up look and grew up with it.

But, I also like the varied placement from the SE. (CGI is a bit dated now, and I'll always prefer the models)
Of course it got that 180 degree shot George had originally wanted as well.

A few years ago I painted this shot, and for a painting, the think the varied placement works better.

Anyone have any other stuff they maybe prefer in the SE more?
(And remember, blinking ewoks are people too)

The Falcon taking off from docking bay 94 is about the only thing in the Special Editions that I unconditionally prefer. Nearly everything else I like in them has some caveat that takes away.

I also notice the things that didn't get changed. Yavin is still conspicuously absent during the end battle. Yavin 4 receding in the distance as the Rebel ships leave the base is still not there. Motti is still listed as a General in the end credits (seriously, where did him being an Admiral come from?), the training montage on Dagobah still wasn't restored to its full length (which would have better conveyed the passage of time), the B-Wings' role in the Battle of Endor wasn't completed and (re)inserted...

I also still kinda wish they'd restored the original sequencing of the Battle of Hoth -- Hobbie ramming Veers' walker head-on, that being the walker whose head/cockpit blows up and then topples over, the one Luke grenaded standing dead in place after, etc.

I still prefer the Falcon's take off from docking bay 94 from the original. Straight and clean.
S-foils opening, original. The shot focused on the wings opening. In the SE, if you didn't know better, you'd hardly even notice them opening.
X and Y wings leaving Yavin IV. Still prefer the original. Pinpoints of light shooting off into the distance rapidly.

There are some things I prefer from the SE. I like the new Sandcrawler shots. I like that they fixed the forced perspective on the cell bay tunnel. Also, during that scene I liked that they fixed the edit with Chewie. Now he doesn't run up twice to the hole Leia blasted in the wall.

Also, while I would've preferred less CG in the final battle, it was a little easier to follow. I remember the very first time I saw it in 77 it was kinda hard to tell who got blown up and who didn't during a few shots.

Ooh. Dammit. Thank you. That is a caveat one for me. >_< I like the initial overhead shot of the repulsors boosting the ship clear as the main drive comes up. Really gets across the rushed departure. But yeah, from there I prefer the original "grab sky" straight shot, not the SE swoop.

In my case, I prefer neither. That's one shot I think needs to be redone yet again. Less dynamism (SE), but the original looked like models stacked up -- and I never understood why the wings opened in reverse order.

Much prefer the SE, if it could be redone with composited models rather than CG.
I like the new Sandcrawler shots.
I want to, but it just looks too much like a model to me. Same with the new shot of Obi-Wan's hut with the desert stretching out behind. Looks too CG. Good ideas, all, just not quite executed perfectly. One of the things I appreciate most about how Foundation Imaging did the new VFX for the Director's Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture is they studied the way the shooting stage lights interacted with the models and recreated that, as well as matching the original film grain and color saturation. The new effects really do blend in seamlessly.

Yeah, now, thanks to the SE, we know it's always either Red 5 or Red 2 blowing up (and always R2-D2 -- poor Artoo... :( )... Except wait -- weren't they they only two surviving members of Red Group...?

Pretty much the only thing from the ANH SE I didn't like were the Jabba scenes (yeah I know they were cut originally) and the Ronto walking across the screen.

Now ROTJ, again the revised Jabba scene (solid FF spot for me), they could have fixed the Imperial rank badges, and they could have added the B-Wings back in along with putting more Rebel fighters in the battle.
