This may be the typical JJ dumbness but it's a crap ton better than the episode 8 we got, and it explains most of the questions we had about TFA.

Haha. Nice try (from whoever made it). :p

That there was written in the structure of a typical novel. A script on the other hand, has a special formal structure to it with each piece of dialogue in a separate paragraph preceded by the character's name, and with each new scene and setting clearly marked.
Even if J.J. Abrams had written an early draft for episode 8, I'm sure that he would have written it like a script.

I could only get through the first two pages before I had to stop. Is there any way to verify this isn't just a fan fiction piece being passed off as a legitimate treatment?
Same, this feels like something I would have written for a school assignment at the age of 12, couldn't get past page two...The format does not feel like a story treatment or a script draft either.

Asking and forgive my ignorance (never worked in film so don’t know what a draft script looks like) but could this be a higher level “storyline outline” that could have been written? Like these are the basic events/touch points that are expected in the movie? Or would such a draft be even more high level and less detailed (there are some details for a very high level script).

Well Lucas had once said he sees Star Wars as a soap opera about family problems. If I know my soaps, the first couple of seasons are amazing (the OT). The next couple are really hit or miss and often miss because they change or retcon too many storylines (PT). The last half is terrible garbage with characters jumping the shark and the story having lost its roots and adding weird stuff like aliens, time travel, evil twin, etc. Its always universally panned by fans because they get rid of the original cast for a new, younger generation (ST).

Well I’ll be, maybe Abrams and Kennedy really do know their stuff. The fact that Johnson removed the random time travel was a terrible move lol.

I don't know for sure either. But this is meant to be an outline, not a script. It's what Ruin Johnson was expected to flesh out and adapt into his script, but he through it out and did his own thing.

I can't say if it's genuine or not, but it has enough of JJ's tropes to be plausible.

There isn't a strict format for treatments like there is for screenplays. At first glance, this is a lot more detailed and has a lot more dialogue than others I've seen. A LOT. But it's within the realm of possibility.

Wow. That was....not good.

Not just "not good," but really, really, REALLY bad. Bad fan fic, for sure.

And no, I strongly doubt its authenticity as having been done by Lawrence friggin' Kasdan. Kasdan's way better than this dreck.

Ok, let's review. First, it's incredibly "safe" and full of callbacks and fan service. There's tons of callbacks to this or that. Typical fan myopia. Second, it's so clearly written by someone who loathes the Rey character. Why is she powerful? Oh, of course. Because Luke made her powerful. Third, you guys should really try to get to the end because it will be absolutely 100% clear to you that it's fanfic when it literally says "This is the ass kicking Luke we've been waiting for!" and describes him dispatching the Knights of Ren by zapping them with force lightning and chopping them up and generally just stealing the spotlight, at which point the treatment literally says "They were once his students, but now they're dead meat!"

Really? Really, dude?!

Moreover -- and this is important -- however much I think JJ is a total hack with a weak capacity for storytelling, remember what he said early on about sidelining Luke: they had to do it to keep Luke from basically just being the hero and stealing the show from the kids. But here, Rey is only powerful because Luke made her? She only beat Kylo Ren because Luke helped her? And then Luke slices and dices the Knights of Ren on the beach and stuff?

Then there's the stuff that isn't addressed, like the whole "What the hell made Ben turn evil?" question. Oh, and Snoke's identity is still a mystery in this. There's no sense of why Han and Leia split up in the treatment at all. No attempt to even begin to address that in any way. So, clearly, whoever wrote this knows **** all about writing actual drama and understanding character.

Again, this is trash fanfic. One may disparage TLJ, but at least it was willing to take a ****ing risk, whereas this dumpster-juice just feels like a collage of fan wishes projected on to red construction paper.

I tried to give it another read today and got prob a page further, I'm not exaggerating when I say I wrote stuff like this when I was 9-10 years old. Not to mention grammatic mistakes, incorrectly soelled characters etc.
Also every single page is headed as "JJ Abrams"...is it meant to give credibility? It's like when I was a teacher and one of the kids brought me a fake doctor's sick note for the day he was skipping class and used some ink and a potato cut in half as the stamp on it and genuinely thought I'd fall for it...
I highly recommend Jenny Nicholson's video where she reads Alan Dean Foster's Episode 9 treatment...very similar level but pretty damn entertaining.

I don’t think anyone is saying it’s good. I think there are some interesting tidbits (Rey essentially being adopted and a proper training segment) but there are a ton of issues.

Han and Leia broke up because they lost Ben to the dark side and that resulted in a rift in their marriage although given that in this instance Luke was responsible for sending him in, I don’t see why Leia or Han won’t call him out on this. There is a big downplaying of Ben (he is essentially sidelined for this new apprentice), Finn still doesn’t get to do anything, and the script goes off the rails in the middle and end (I mean time travel? Really?).

the fact that it was so safe kind of made me think it was Abrams though lol. TFA took very few risks and that was in terms of casting only.

I mean, maaaaaybe I could see JJ's influence, but he's a better writer just of dialogue and scene than that. I mean, I think he's a lousy storyteller, but he can craft a sentence. It's safe, but that "safety" is also a hallmark of fan fic because fan fic so rarely innovates. Instead, it just reiterates what's been done before, occasionally putting a new gloss on it, but often very consciously referencing what's come before.

I think this is just fan fic.

It's very interesting how very difficult it is for so many people to come up with a really good follow up to TFA and TLJ. Granted I don't read or seek out fanfic and alternative treatments but whatever I saw was terrible. The only one with potential and ideas was Thor Skywalker's ep8 treatment.

fanfic.

as a writer, bad one or not, i'm pretty sure abrams would know the difference between THERE, THEIR and THEY'RE. come on....
IDK ..

Almost every chowder head on here that's been critical of franchises across the board, no matter what the genre, they MUST be well established writers with years of accolades & verified successes. They can immediately see the myriad of mistakes, lazy, amateurish, or just bad writing in everything that's released for public consumption.

All that talent flowing through their bodies & they don't know the difference between 'your & you're', so I'm sure a hack writing for Adolf Mouse wouldn't either.

...jk, of course.

I still am baffled all these years later by Abrams and company saying Luke took over the story when he showed up. That, right there, should have told them that his arc wasn't finished yet. Just as Obi-Wan didn't wrench the story away from Luke when he showed up in Star Wars, by the time he shows up in Rey's era, he should be well past his apotheosis and ready for the advisor/mentor/teacher role.

And even if they, for some reason, still wanted to jump over an entire generation of their lives and galactic events, they're the writers. If a character meant to be secondary or supporting takes over the spotlight from your protagonist(s), step back and rethink your story. You should, as the writer, be able to make the characters behave -- unless you don't mind and just want to see where they take the story. I can think of half a dozen ways to not have Luke overshadow everything upon his entrance. Maybe the trick is to not have superfanboys write the script, who can't help their inner twelve-year-old wanting to see Luke Skywalker come in kicking all the asses and taking all the names with his BADDEST JEDI EVAR powers and his MAD LAZOR SWORD SKILLZ.

I am reminded of how so many EU writers had no idea what to do with the Force ghosts, so they just mostly ignored them, or had some contrivance where they "went away" to deprive the heroes of that resource. When, in reality, after the party on Endor, Luke is probably getting a lot of help from Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Anakin. In the now-Legends Legacy comic series, Cade Skywalker just couldn't get rid of Luke's Force ghost disapproving of his life choices and trying to get him back on track. Nag, nag, nag, nag, nag.
