For me. When TFA first came out, I really enjoyed it. But as I was thinking of the Sequel Trilogy as a whole. I felt there was some sort of disconnect with the other two. Palpatine was the baddie for 2/3 of the story. And now all of sudden we get a new unknown big baddie? Something didn't set right with me. But then Snoke died, then Palpatine is back. Ah it made sense to me now. Snoke was just filler. And I honestly think that without Palpatine this new trilogy would feel so horribly tacked on. But Palpatine was their from the beginning. He should be there at the end in some form. So personally I can't wait to see what they do with him. JJ claims the set ups are all in plain sight. So I'm excited to see what and if they can pull it off.No its not a new concept by any means, especially in this type of genre. Though it just feels lazy in this case when the previous two episodes didn't have him as the lead villain only to show up at the last minute. To me it also feels like a lack of confidence in their new characters too. I mean why not have Snoke come back from the dead? Or have Kylo go full evil? Why does the Emperor have to even be in the movie? I thought this was the Skywalker saga, not the Palpatine saga?
Once again they choose to pull from the past rather than trust that their story is strong enough to stand on its own.
I don't need constant recognition of characters or scenarios in order to be invested in the story. What I do need is characters who are developed enough for me to get emotionally attached to, and for me this new trilogy hasn't done that.
Often I think this new story has had to rely too much on the past rather than have the guts to stand alone.
And btw this coming from the guy who hates the Dark Empire story because of Palpatine returning
