No its not a new concept by any means, especially in this type of genre. Though it just feels lazy in this case when the previous two episodes didn't have him as the lead villain only to show up at the last minute. To me it also feels like a lack of confidence in their new characters too. I mean why not have Snoke come back from the dead? Or have Kylo go full evil? Why does the Emperor have to even be in the movie? I thought this was the Skywalker saga, not the Palpatine saga?

Once again they choose to pull from the past rather than trust that their story is strong enough to stand on its own.

I don't need constant recognition of characters or scenarios in order to be invested in the story. What I do need is characters who are developed enough for me to get emotionally attached to, and for me this new trilogy hasn't done that.

Often I think this new story has had to rely too much on the past rather than have the guts to stand alone.
For me. When TFA first came out, I really enjoyed it. But as I was thinking of the Sequel Trilogy as a whole. I felt there was some sort of disconnect with the other two. Palpatine was the baddie for 2/3 of the story. And now all of sudden we get a new unknown big baddie? Something didn't set right with me. But then Snoke died, then Palpatine is back. Ah it made sense to me now. Snoke was just filler. And I honestly think that without Palpatine this new trilogy would feel so horribly tacked on. But Palpatine was their from the beginning. He should be there at the end in some form. So personally I can't wait to see what they do with him. JJ claims the set ups are all in plain sight. So I'm excited to see what and if they can pull it off.

And btw this coming from the guy who hates the Dark Empire story because of Palpatine returning

I always interpreted it that he was talking to the officer in charge and it was only made so audible for the audience and the rest if the guys only got the memo from the boss that these guys can go.

You and your gifs man... Simply saying Sauron would have done it really.
I learn best when there's visuals. So I use visuals when I a lot. Sometimes too many........:p

Since it's been nearly 20 years since the Jedi Order's genocide, troops stationed on a backwater planet may not even think about encountering Jedi anymore and not recall or concern themselves with keeping an eye out for signs like that.
Small nit: "Send a detachment down to retrieve them." They're from the Devastator, not stationed there.

I definitely think it's a combination of most troops never actually encountering a Jedi and the back-and-forth amplified for the audience's benefit.

Ah, yes, that's true, thanks for pointing that out, my bad.(y):) I'd assumed those were troops from the local garrison who might have gotten word from higher up, but yeah, no reason it wouldn't be the same troops who were sent dirtside and we see saying, "Look, sir, droids!"

You were right, the ST is it's own story and disconnected from the OT and the PT. Tacking on is exactly what bringing Palpatine and Lando is for the last installment, a very weak tacking on.

But that's what happens when George can't make up his mind  and has the Emperor literally blow up!!

Just wait until Amazon is big enough to buy StarWars and they bring him back in their own garbage trilogy. No ones ever REALLY gone!
