I'm stumped. What are we seeing?

It’s the first time this style helmet is seen with a visible microphone and connection wire when not worn. I assume because in the OT movies, the mic and wire is part of a separate headset. I assume the Racal Minilite Headset. Any other time you see Someone put on or take off the helmet, there is no mic or wire. It’s also the case when a Luke is running around Hoth.

Are you proving my point?

It's a link to the screen used helmets. I think your right. But clearly the microphone piece was a part of the helmet on some. Here's the Luke "hero" helmet.

I'm going to have to run through some scenes the movies though.

I am pretty sure that one is the same one in MoM and although it is from the LFL Archives, it is not a movie used helmet. It was made for publicity reason for an 80s video game.

So I'm pretty sure your right. They probably are wearing headsets under their helmets, at least in ANH. However the ESB mic is different, looks to be a part of the helmet, yet when Luke takes his helmet off after crash landing, no mic. It's most likely at least for ESB that we are seeing stunt helmets. And only seeing hero helmets in the close ups. As none of pilots wearing their helmets as Leia is briefing them have mics.

How did you ever catch that detail?

I’m not absolutely sure but I am pretty sure the headsets can be made to configure so the mic can be on either side. I also think the The Empire Strikes Back mic is what the mic looks like if you pull the rubber tip off.

In Return of the Jedi, they forgot it altogether.

It is just something I noticed because I’m a big fan of the helmet.

Those helmets are gorgeous.

I wonder how they secured the headset behind the ear cup? I noticed you can see the wire running tucked back behind the ear cup in this photo.

To get back to the bombers. I liked the bombers design, concept and purpose. I just think the the movie just did not use/portray them in a way that made sense.

If you have a ship that is that delicate, shouldn’t it be loaded with armor and shields? And why pack them so close together if there is a chance something could start a chain reaction from one ship to another?

It’s the same with the ski speeder. It’s like they get all set up for a battle scene; speeders going on the attack and troops in the trench... and nothing happens.

They could have done some cool stuff with some of the situations, but then they just fall flat.

I’d really like to see a scene with those bombers where they show them being used affectively.

They do have shields and armor. It happens quickly, but you see bombers shrugging off blaster fire. But shields are plot armor. So they hold for as long as the plot says.

And they fly close together to gain protection. The idea is, and enemy fighter pilot.would have to be nuts to try to fly through the formation. Just look at how close together these are.

And I found this gif. I remember seeing this on some ww2 documentaries we have and thought it's interesting. I believe it's B-24 that takes a direct hit from AA

Oh damn! That gif is crazy! It looks like some of the behind the scenes footage of the ILM crew blowing up x-wing models for ANH.

The closeness was supposed to provide overlapping fields of fire for the various gunners. You couldn't fly near the formation without hitting a covered angle. Didn't always work out that way, and it doesn't protect you from flak, but that was the idea.

Look... I get they are trying to invoke the WW2 imagery. I am all for it. But it's stupid to have 3 bombers wiped out by the debris of one TIE fighter. As bombers they would have been better prepared for it.

I also get what they were trying to do in that scene... Heavy loses and an emotional plot point for Rose. But they could have done it better. They could have had a better battle scene that at least made the bombers harder but ultimately able to be destroyed. And/Or they simply could have just had 2 or 3 bombers.

There is something else I need explained to me. I don't understand the whole chase plot. The resistance finds out that the FO has the ability to track them even after hyperspace. They believe one of the ships it tagged. So instead they don't jump again, they try to stay ahead of them and hop for reinforcements.

Why don't they just split up and jump to different places? At lease some might get away.
Why doesn't the FO call for more ships to come the other direction?
Why doesn't some of the FO jump away and come back at the other direction?
Are we really to believe that every ship is evenly matched in speed that the FO can't catch them and the resistance can't get away?
What about TIEs? They are fast. Cant they send them ahead to disable or distract till the FO fleet catches up?

Am I missing something?

What happens to the bombers is something that would fall under the freak accident category

So on the FO part. I think it's mainly just them being sadistic and exercising the control that they have. Why kill em off quickly when you can make their death a slow one?

And far as the Resistance goes, if understand the active hyperspace tracking, even if they jumped 3 different directions the FO would still be able to follow each ship. And they just pick them off one by one.

To me it's just a lame space chase. I get the logic behind it but what a bore to watch.

100% agree...

Instead of chasing the fleet, send 2 destroyers forward in hyperspace, bang a 180 at the next exit, then stop in front of the resistance, trapping them in between..

Then prepare the boarding party..

The only real excuse is the writer doesn’t know how Star Wars works..
