100% agree...

Instead of chasing the fleet, send 2 destroyers forward in hyperspace, bang a 180 at the next exit, then stop in front of the resistance, trapping them in between..

Then prepare the boarding party..

The only real excuse is the writer doesn’t know how Star Wars works..

Um....space has 3 dimensions ;)

But seriously though what would be the fun in that? Your movie would be over in like 15 minutes. It's kinda like why doesn't the Death Star come out right in line with Yavin 4? Or why don't the Imperials tractor beam the Falcon avoiding that whole chase through the asteroid field?

I know but from the last I read space in Star Wars works like highways.. the Navi computers only work in the highways, you designate from the highway and there’s a chance you never come back

That’s how in ep1 the blockade worked.. I always wondered why ships just would jump behind the other side of the planet, it’s because of their highway system

The blockade parked their @$$’s right at the exit so no one could leave the planet or enter

As for the tractor beam, the ties have to disable it, then the tractor beam can pull them in

That’s the last I heard from that to. In ANH the falcon was cruising I guess in the same direction so the beam could lock on easy

But when the fastest ship in the galaxy is running around like dale earnhardt it’s little bit harder to catch

Yeah you can't just jump to hyperspace anywhere. But you can travel at sublight speeds going "up" or "down, depending on your relation to the galactic plane. And since the Resistance ships are faster.

Actually, he only ran around a circle, in one direction. Wouldn't be too hard to pick him up :)

I get the navi computer and hyperspace route aspect, but I don't get the slow speed chase. The inference being that all capital ships can only move at one speed? So they have to drop for hyperspace where they did. Fine. The fighters flew all over them. The size of snoke ship alone should have had thousands of TIE's...just swarm them and be done with it. Even a hundred would have sufficed. Sitting back til they run out of gas makes no sense at all.

I don't buy that for a second. The Falcon is literally flying in straight line with one ISD right on it's tail, and two ISDs coming straight towards him. 3 chances to catch him. So either there's some extreme incompetence going on....or Vader was planning the whole Cloud City trap from the outset.

You would think the first order would have faster smaller battle ships.

Naaah pour writing again

What ever joker, what we got in the movies is what we got

:p

To me it's just a lame space chase. I get the logic behind it but what a bore to watch.
Wrath of Khan, Hunt for Red October...just to name a couple where the “chase” scenes are tactical, deliberate and rely on intelligence and resourcefulness instead of speed, explosions and fast pace...and they managed to pull it off as exciting and enjoyable. Would have been all for a chase like that, sod codebreak and the like.

Seriously...for some weird reason I like you so it’s nothing personal but this is the textbook comeback that irks me to no end, when someone criticizes the new babies that “WelLlLll akChUalLy in ThE oLD moViES aS wElL”...it’s like spreading crap on a toast to prove that toast is the same as crap.

All I'm seeing here is
ESB: Plot holes excusable
TLJ: Plot holes inexcusable.
No surprise there, that’s all you want to see. :)

Wrath of Khan, Hunt for the Red October.....mmmm good movies

I just feel it's worth reminding. It just makes me scratch my head in confusion when people are kinda irritated by the plot not being 100% logical, yet the old films they love aren't 100% logical.

But it's at this point I'm going to interject a meme. I don't normally do this, but it was to good to pass up.:p

You always an ass, or is it just on the weekends?
Hey I’m not the one who sporadically checks into discussions just to make generic snarky comments about people who dislike the movies I do. :)
But anyhoos, didn’t mean to pick a fight, meant it as a jab, sorz if it came out harsh.

Oh god no, I don’t think anyone says the old ones are perfect. It’s really about how much the movie captivated you to overlook some of these issues. BTTF can be picked apart logically and I will never deny that it has lots of plot holes but I still love it to bits. Also length works against the slow space chase cuz it takes up about an hour or so out of the movie so a large chunk is a problem with plenty of solutions to it.
I like the meme tho, it’s kind of on point, no doubt.
Anyway, I’ll stop cuz we’re retreading the old debates, apologies for going there again.
So just read that Mark Hamill doesn’t want to reprise Luke in the future after Ep9. I know he said that about the Joker a few times.

Given the fast paced fun adventure tone of all the Star Wars films up to that point having a slow methodical space chase seems boring by comparison.

Regardless of the technical aspects of how hyperspace works in this fictional universe, I just found it all uninteresting. If I wanted that kind of cat and mouse tension I would watch the Hunt for Red October or one of those movies.

To each their own. We all know this will never be resolved and each side has made up their minds. I wish I felt the way you do about it Joek3rr and loved all of Star Wars as a series. I mean that sincerely. Your enthusiasm is inspiring and even if we butt heads from time to time I hold you in high regard because of your passion for the films.

Alright nerdy question for you guys.

What do lightsaber blades really look like?

So what I mean by this is... what would a lightsaber look like in real life. Are they really made up of a white core with a colored haze around them? Or are they just a brightly colored plasma blade and the white core is because it's supposed to be "blowing out" the camera? Like the way an FX lightsaber does?

As a Star Wars fan, I feel I am very laidback when it comes to stories, details, plot points, etc... If a situation does not make sense, I try to step back and figure out a reason why the story unfolds as it has. I all the movies and shows, I have been able to do that... except for TLJ. I could forgive boring, but the overall plot devices of the movie just don't really work and I have not been able to reconcile them.

I get the that they were trying to advance the characters. Poe learning a lesson about leadership, Rey accepting her path as a Jedi, Finn finally choosing to take on the cause of the Resistance. All good but the story used to achieved these journeys were filled with holes.

At this point I have resolved to just let the movie be. I'm not one of those fans who is going to take their ball and go home and say I am ignoring the movie. The movie is canon and if there are aspects I can't understand, then I will just submit and say it is my fault. I do try to find things I do like about TLJ. I like the Porgs. I like the scene Luke gets Rey to reach out and feel the force. I like Luke and Yoda scene. I like Luke on the Falcon. I like Luke facing off with Rey. I like the character development of Poe, Rey, and Finn. I like the lightsaber battle with Rey and Kylo against the guard. So I try to focus on those aspects. I look forward to Eps 9.

Wait a minute?! Did I just fall for a joker trap?! ;)

And I apologize for snapping back.

Technically, the chase wasn't slow. Both ships were going at their respective top speed, with the Raddus going faster, but quickly burning fuel. It's just the the size of the ships means they can't be as dynamic as the Falcon weaving in and out of Star Destroyers.

I like to think the core is burning white hot, which is what give it the cutting power. Our eyes see is as white light, with a color corona, which is produced by the Jedi's crystal powering the sword.
