Joek3rr , I rewatched Arrival last night and it was pretty dark and muted. Shot compositions and camerawork were gorgeous but lighting was pretty drab. Now that you pointed out that the DP was the same for Solo I wonder if it was his influence on the latter. With Arrival it was a conscious choice, Villeneuve wanted it to look like the whole thing is happening on a bad rainy Tuesday morning (arguable if that’s a good look though). His previous movies, Enemy and Prisoners were also dark and had a very strong one-tone effect. I doubt Ron Howard would make it a conscious choice for a space swashbuckler action adventure movie.

I have only watched the "Disc 2"s that came with the original DVD release. I only recently got the Harmy edits a few months ago and fell in love with them.

And yes, I absolutely HATE those edits to ESB....I actually like seeing the matte lines and rear projection during the Hoth battle lol.

Unfortunately, yes. :p (I don't mind the enhanced Cloud City scenery, but I'll be forever annoyed at the line replacements of "You're lucky you don't taste very good!" and "Bring my shuttle.") It's OK, though, I've got Harmy's on my laptop. ;)
I’m more annoyed by the Emperor dialogue...makes Vader look like a tit for not figuring out that Skywalker may be related to Skywalker. I also like the old hologram for creep factor although admittedly that’s probably the rose tinted nostalgia glasses speaking. Not like the rubbermask that McDiarmid is wearing is that great.

Yes, me too, it changes things dramatically, almost as though Lucas didn't understand the original dialogue
The original was a deeper cat & mouse game set-up, if they'd kept the dialogue the same it would have been a pretty good upgrade

Urgh, yeah, this too - I must have immediately blocked it out of my memory. :p:lol: The new inexplicable dialogue and the Emperor looking like a bloated frog were definitely uncalled for.

(Hey George, when y'all typed the **** they COULD say and made sense, it was better to leave it alone LOL!)

In my head canon. Vader is playing dumb. But he knows who Luke is.......wait this might be canon. Because Vader sends Boba to discover Luke's identity.

Yea that’s an option but that makes Palps a doofus...or makes Vader think that Palps is a doofus. Anyhoos I liked it better in the olden days bah humbug gruff and grump...

This is how I see it:

The film opens with the crawl stating that Vader is obsessed with finding young Skywalker
The conversation of Vader & The Emperor starts with The Emperor stating that there is a disturbance with the Force, they both know that Luke had been the one who destroyed the Death Star,....that he is Vader's son & has a little control of The Force,....but this tremor in The Force that they both feel is because Luke has made contact with Yoda, like a flies on a web, the spiders know something has changed

They now have a serious threat and make plans to either kill him, or turn him to the Dark Side

(at this stage in the franchise there were no rule of 2)

The new dialogue changes all of this

Mmm...still prefer the simpler original exchange, because it keeps things just vague enough while still making sense, whereas the new dialogue feels overly expository - I mean, we in the audience already know Luke destroyed the Death Star. Basically, the old conversation gets the same info across more succinctly. It's not like anything here really needed clarification.

(Neat comparison video!)

About the only potential benefit I'd see with the redone dialogue is an emphasis on how pissed off Vader must be being reminded that Palpatine blatantly lied to him about Padmé's death and is now glossing that over, and yet he has to play the dumbass while seething over that.

My bad. I should have clarified. I was talking about ESB, then ROTJ. Hence the ROTJ gifs.

Also Vader never ever threatens to kill Leia. Only to turn her.
"If you will not turn.....then perhaps she will."
"NEVER!!!!!!" At which point Luke is filled with rage, and mercilessly attacks his father, after he just got telling him, twice, "I will not fight you."

I didn't mean to write kill. Same thing though. Threatening to turn Leia was a threat and that allowed Luke to react to defend her.

I will say I agree with Joek3err here.

The Dark side is like addiction. One can beat addiction but the urges will never go away. I know this from personal experience.

The dark side will always exist and always be an option for any given situation like urges to act on an addiction will always be there.

OT Luke actually acted on the Dark side urges and resulted in cutting off his father's hands. That's when he came to his senses.

TLJ Luke came to his senses on this urge before acting on it. So he has progressed and came a long way.

Luke defeated the Dark Side when he went up against the Emperor. Lucas showed that in the scene where Luke throws his lightsaber away (I wouldn't have done that though...) and says "No, I'll never turn to the dark side. You've failed your Highness. I'm a Jedi, like my father before me." If the most powerful Sith Lord seen in a 1,000 years couldn't make Luke use the Dark Side, nothing will. Yeah you have to think about things that might potentially lead to the Dark Side, but murdering your nephew isn't in there. And it would be murder because Ben hasn't done anything yet. Now, if they had had a good writer and Ben was about to kill someone, then it would be perfectly reasonable for Luke to try to kill him.

Luke didn't defeat the Dark Side. He overcame it, that one time. But he was alreary using the Dark Side before that. To quote the script for Return of the Jedi.

"Luke looks momentarily toward the Emperor, then back to Vader, and realizes he is using the dark side. He steps back, turns off his lightsaber, and relaxes, driving the hate from his being."

But the Dark Side isn't a one and done thing. Luke didn't get a 'Get Out of Dark Side Free' card after that. If anything, because he's used it once, it's always going to be a problem for him. It's like Anakin. He didn't just suddenly start using the Dark Side. He used it once, then twice, the a third, fourth etc.....until finally in ROTS he falls completely.

Just as an aside, for the longest time I thought Luke said "DARTH!!!!" and not "NEVER!!!!". I recall even the ROTJ storybook had him saying "DARTH!!!!". Kind of a bummer cause I think him yelling "DARTH" works better. Like he no longer acknowledges Vader is his father and he reduces him back to being his enemy.

yooooooOOOOOOOO.

It's a little awkward that the upper part of the face is immobile and only the lips move, kind of like those gifs that are mostly static with one moving part, lol, but a definite improvement over Emperor Retaining Water. :p And I suppose one could argue that it's creepier to have Palpatine not blink. Kind of retains that eerie vibe the original effect had.
