I agree. He had more agency in Jedi because he gained the trust of the locals to help them in their cause. Far more than in Empire. To my recollection the only time his translation skills came in handy during their escape from Hoth was when communicating with the Falcon's computer and even then 3PO himself commented,

"Where is R2 when I need him!" This was in response to 3PO's difficulties understanding the ship's language which is normally his specially being a protocol droid, though I suppose in that case Artoo would have been better because that's his specialty communicating with ships. 3PO was essentially a diplomat between the Rebels and the Ewoks when they reached Endor so I'd say he had a very important role. From the outset, sure it might not make sense to bring a shiny gold robot with them but he did prove to be useful.

If anything like Inquisitor Peregrinus pointed out he's basically Artoo's translator for the human characters. 3PO's skills are not necessary in all scenarios but not knowing when or where they will be needed the audience can reasonably assume that it's handy to have both droids with them no matter where they go. Artoo handles the technical aspects of their adventures and 3PO handles the translation/ diplomacy side of things.

Plus from a dramatic point of view for the audience they can offer some levity to what can be pretty heavy dramatic scenes if necessary. To me having a protocol droid on Endor isn't so much of a continuity or story logic issue that would break my suspension of disbelief considering he's been on all the lead character's adventures. I think there are far worse offenders with gaps in the story logic and they are so glaring you could fly the Falcon through those plot holes.

But wasn't it C-3PO's plan to save the rebels after they were caught by having the Ewoks help, which in turn allowed for them to gain access to the shield generator to take it out, and allowing the rebel ships to attack the Death Star to destroy it?

Leia's the politician so I'm kinda guessing she told Threepio to go feed them a good line to get their cooperation. C-3PO is a translator, not a strategic thinker.

It seems implied that 3PO was enjoying himself considering he's always being talked down to and then he finally got some respect when the Ewoks thought he was a god. In a way it was kind of a dig at Han for being so rude to him all the time. Which I found to be kind of funny.

The droids are such a key component to the first film and as the series progressed they were relegated to lesser and lesser importance. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing in and of itself when you consider they are supporting characters though how well used they were in the overall story varies by episode.

To their credit they did use C-3PO well in Jedi on the whole so his inclusion on the mission to Endor was a non issue in my book.

Here's a question for you. What are some of your least favorite names in Star Wars? It could be a character, or ship, or planet, anything. The character or place or what have you may be cool but what name just grates on you?

Snoke
Sheev
Those are two of the worst offenders in my book.

Conan Antonio (Motti)
Wilhuff (Tarkin)
Padme
Dorme
Nute Gunray
(Darth) Maul
Savage Opress
(Darth) Sidious
(Darth) Tyrannus
Dooku
(Kit) Fisto
(Mon) Calamari

Without thinking hard.

Oh, and naming the fat guy "Porkins" -- that's just tacky.

Hahaha.

I agree with all those. Making Darth a title is interesting but does take away from the uniqueness of Vader.

I'd forgotten about Savage Opress. You can't just pronounce two different words with elongated vowels and state that it's a proper name. It's just stupid beyond belief. It's like the people who pronounce Target, Tarjshaeee.... It's pretentious.

Ben Quadrineros
Sio Bibble makes me sort of nauseous
Count Dooku is pretty bad.
Jar Jar Binks
Sith Trooper (because they have no real reason to be called that without some sort of Dark Side powers)

General Hux. Is it short for Huxtable?

Dang, I forgot some more from the old SW Marvel Comic (ah, nostalgia):

Hoojib - because..................hOoJiB

Lumiya (Dark Lady of the Sith looooooool) - honestly her name just reminds me of Lumière from Disney's Beauty and the Beast ; even her birth name is goofy, because Shira Brie just makes me think of cheese.

Yeah, as mentioned earlier--Kit Fisto. That's gotta be the worst character name. As for the music genre that Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes play, I'd like to think someone's probably addressed changing that in the canon lore, but doing so would just attract attention to it.

Another unnecessarily named "character" is Mennis Duren. I get the homage, it's just...
