DST WOK PHASER... Who got theirs?!?

In final conclusion, it's good, but no where near the brilliance that is rocorm63's build. His Wrath of Khan phaser is without a doubt the best looking and most screen accurate rendition ever made of this phaser. Wait until he presses the trigger to hear it fire. Totally 100x better than the sounds we have on the Diamond Select phaser.

Did the Motion Picture version prop also have the holographic tape down the sides or was it exclusive to TWOK?

There aren't a lot of great pics of the TMP phaser, but the pic Phase Pistol posted in post #28 shows a TMP phaser without holo tape.

I think it was done for the TWOK phasers to jazz them up a little, not something original to the TMP prop.

TMP version does not have the side tape.

Note also that the TMP version has the side "ribs" wrapping all the way around the front. The WOK version terminates the ribs at the black part, and has a flat nose.

Hmm....

*looks at left over Insulation Tape. Cuts some of the tape.

This is so crude, but what the heck. I'll try anything once.

*Shoves bits of the insulation tape in the gaps of the trigger

........:eek

This is it! This is the answer! If anyone, and I do mean anyone who has TWOK phaser from Diamond Select Toys, I have a solution to the loud trigger click!

Alright. I've been so sick and tired of this gawd awful "loud trigger" noises that I could just leave it be. I tried taking the screw pegs out but that didn't work. So after observing how much space there is in the gap of the phaser, I decided to see what would happen if I put something in the gaps. Nothing truly solid like glue or clay, but something that retracts.

So after looking around my house, I stumbled upon some black foam insulation tape I had hanging around (My Dad insulated my entire heating pipe system!) and decided that was a good material to use.

I cut off long tiny bits that were about the length of the trigger from top to bottom. Shoved them in via a tiny phillips flat head screwdriver on both sides of the trigger and....well....NO MORE CLICKING NOISES! In fact, the foam responds so well, it pushes the trigger out earlier than before making the firing more responsive. I can actually now click the dud on the trigger itself without worrying about it making the loudest clicking noise!

:love:love:love

If you have the means, I HIGHLY recommend doing it. It makes the phaser so much more fun to play with when the trigger is smooth and there's no loud clicking noises.

Is it me, or are the corners on the DST a bit sharp?

Don't get me wrong, for $30 I'll be jumping on one.

Hadn't noticed the lack of holo tape on the TMP version. I put some on my old Playmates and it helped the look considerably, without resorting to hole filling and a whole bunch of work I didn't want to do.

Anybody remember the old South Bend toys version? Way off, but a lot of fun back in the day!

The WOK phaser is supposed to look sharper on the front end.
No holo tape on TMP version.
South Bend toys were actually very accurate based on the prototype given to them. It was a situation much like the STNG 'Generations' uniforms on teh Playmates toys. Everyone thought they were innacurate but they were accurate to the artwork given to them by Paramount. Just like these uniforms a decision was made to go with a different design but too late in teh process for South Bend to change their tooling.

It's time for "Did they get it right?". This edition is focused on the packaging. If you'll observe.

Phaser Package said:
Throughout their adventures, the phaser served the Enterprise captain and crew as their only defense in the vast unknown. The phaser made it's first appearance in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and also appeared in the sequel - Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

Ok. The 'first appearance' quote isn't entirely correct. The phaser seen in the Wrath of Khan was NOT first seen in Khan, but in the first Trek movie, The Motion Picture. It just wasn't used.

Second error is the phaser appearing in The Search for Spock. Well, not this phaser type. For the Search for Spock, the budget allowed the prop makers to design a totally different phaser design that was very similar to the Original Series phaser.

Just throwing that out there. :angel

The TMP phaser was altered for WOK, so it really is the first appearance in this form.

And the WOK does appear in SFS. The security guards in front of Spock's quarters when McCoy breaks in are holding WOK phasers.

Oops, my mistake. I do believe they appear somewhere in SFS, I could be wrong, again.

Sadly packaging is often wrong, nothing new there.

Heck two of TOS video releases had wrong pictures on the cover.

Sigh. Is it my post count? Is it my non-experience in the prop/replica life span compared to everyone elses that makes my researched and detailed descriptions just passed past aside? I'm trying to contribute.

:(

The phaser actually does appear in TMP, clipped to the belts of the security guards, first in the "V'ger probe invades Bridge" scene (the security guards were edited out of the theatrical cut but appear in the Director's Cut)

and again in the scene where the Ilia probe shows up in her quarters ("Humans, Ensign Perez... us.")

The TMP/WOK phaser also shows up in "The Next Generation", on a weapons wall in "Too Short a Season" (note also the Trek III phaser opposite it):

...and aboard the Enterprise-C in "Yesterday's Enterprise" (although in this case it is an Ed Miarecki "convention version" and not an original TMP prop)

Nice grabs there Phase. Curious to know if the sound team ever got to the sound effects of the phaser before the scene was cut. However, since the film had almost no sound compared to the Director's Edition, they probably didn't.

It's good to know that Robert Wise decided to spare a redshirt. :thumbsup

The South Bend Toys version was one of my favorite toys as a kid. Not only was it a phaser, but it was a LASER TAG phaser...and one of the first ones IIRC. Predated the Worlds Of Wonder Laser Tag by nearly 10 years.

I never did get around to pre-ordering, but found one for $30 at my comics shop.
Fun, fun propish toy! :)

Extremely minor niggle, more humorous than anything: I like the sound effect triggered when you reattach the P1, but why is there a "click" sound at the beginning of the sound effect? The physical items in your hands already make a click sound when you put them together, FOR REAL. So you get click "click" "energy charging sound effect". :lol

Kinda like toys that have screws molded in as part of the sculpt...right next to real screws used to hold the toy together.

I like the procedure for getting various settings, but if it were a real-life weapon, I'd have R&D come up with a quicker way to put it back on Safety. If you were on setting 1, you have to cycle the weapon through DISINTEGRATE to get it back to Safety. Lots of potential for fatal accidents there. ;)

Maybe it's the inner mechanics of the device locking it into place that coincide with the placement? :confused

I'm still curious on why the trigger is so freaking loud when you press it. I'm serious, everyone who owns this should try my method. It makes the whole phaser so much better.
