DRIVE (2011) Scorpion Satin Jacket

It was influenced by jackets guys brought home from Korea after the war. Usually satin with something embroidered on the back. But, as far we've been told, the scorpion doesn't have a meaning. I think they just picked something that looked cool.

Anyone that's heard anything different feel free to chime in.

Isn't the purpose of the scorpion to be a kind of metaphor for Driver? While the scorpion was added in at the last minute, they still worked it into the script by adding the reference to the scorpion and the frog story, though interestingly enough it was added after the movie was finished (originally when Bernie asks where Nino is, instead of making the scorpion/frog reference he simply says "He's gone").

From my understanding, it means that, like the scorpion, Driver can't escape his nature. No matter how hard he tries to live a "normal" life, he's simply a violent man and he can't change that.

It could also be that, like a scorpion, Driver can appear calm one second, then suddenly strike in a quick and deadly manner.

Oh yeah! I totally forgot about that story. I definitely think you're right.

They said the scorpion was something of a homage to some other film.. or song, or something like that. I can't remember.

Not a cost thing. Don't dig the brown and really think the jacket is hideous anyway. I'm a fan of the film more than anything and wouldn't wear the jacket for any thing other than halloween. For those of you who are more interested in just simply replicating the look for Halloween and not trying to actually become Ryan Gosling, check this: Do your best Ryan Gosling impression with ‘Drive’-inspired style . I must say I'm surprised I haven't read anyone talk about matching hair or skin color yet with all these Stans here. Anyone go out and buy that Mustang yet? It's actually VIN #1ZVBP8X#C510001GETALIFE!

Here are some other great photos for reference, but please note, they actually stained the jacket with cow's blood, so make you do to or else others will know you're not actually Ryan Gosling. DRIVE - Driver (Ryan Gosling) bloody costume | The Golden Closet
Hey cool we have the DB post of the day. :rolleyes

Yes! You got it. I knew someone would fill the gap right after. I love seeing this thread bumped since I feel like it brings me closer to getting this jacket haha. I'd like to see someone replicate the hammer too. I did a bit of googling, it was made from a Vaughan hammer (at least, the head was) but that's all I know. Hoping they do official replicas of that beast.

Im currently waiting for my jacket to be screen printed later today, but I sent off for final approval an hour ago.

Im not going for complete authenticity - its a halloween costume.

I got the gloves mentioned earlier in this thread - I hope to have the stitching and such added by this weekend - ill post some pics of the finished product.

I finished my cheap Halloween version of the jacket this weekend:

Sorry for the hipster Instgram pic it's the only one I have.

It's a white satin baseball jacket from Sunstarr that I spray dyed the collar, cuffs, and waist with Design Masters. It's not super accurate with the buttons up front and no stand up collar. I also got two tiny spots of overspray where the masking peeled back. Not happy about that.

The scorpion is made of felt that's glued to the back of the jacket. The felt I got at the craft store were really small. The size I needed for the logo ended up requiring me to cut out the scorpion in pieces so there's some crappy looking "seams"

Eh, it'll do for Halloween but it's not my best work ever. :confused

I'm just about done with my jacket for halloween. I started with a second hand satin members only jacket that I found. I hand painted the cuffs and waist brown using textile paint. I wish I had done some research because I think spray would have probably been a lot easier.

Then I cut the collar and the side panels out of dark brown felt and glued them on (I dont have a sewing machine so it was my only option). Then I used some mustard colored felt for the scorpion and painted the lighter parts on to give it that shaded effect and glued that on. I think it turned out pretty well for $30.

Dude. That is awesome! I hope mine comes out half as sweet as that! Nice job :thumbsup

Nice work man.

Anyone want to post pictures of their outfits so far on them? I'd love to see what your costumes look like.

since I can't wait to get a hold of the jacket, I decided in the meantime to get Driver's haircut. I brought a pic to my hairdresser and he was please to gave me the same . However, I won't go for blond as he suggested.:)
