Limited Run Dredd Lawgiver 2012 Full Electronics and Action

I was messaging about text for the the 'brass plate' and I prob should have included a lot more context, so apologies. If you haven't received a message yet it's because I stopped after receiving some quizzical replies and thought I would link this post to further messages. I've mentioned this before somewhere in the thread but never went into details.

So here it is:

This is the airsoft Glock Gen 3 used in the original Dredd 2012 Lawgiver:

See that little flat part on the grip? That's not on a real Glock Gen 3.

So here's where you get to the interesting part of replicating a prop. Do you just add the blank spot? I mean, it's just an incidental and really has no bearing on the lawgiver. Or do you use it as an opportunity? So in this case I added 'LAWGIVER' to the space:

Dredd2012 FIX2 (v70~recovered).png

Oh, and the other side had the Glock logo, which is not only trademarked but sorta gets into replica territory. This also means that I'm replicating pointless things that reduce the immersion so I did this:
Dredd2012 FIX2 v71a.png

It's not like you see either of the grip details in the movie, and this makes it look a lot more like something issued by the Grand Hall of Justice imho.

But this arose another opportunity to add something cool in the run, Lawgivers are encoded to the user, so why not make it a little more personal? So I decided to use it as a place to mount a personalized brass plate:

The text here is just extruded for readability but on the plates I'm making I will be using a diamond etching bit to engrave the text in real brass that I will inset into the space.

If you're looking for ideas the canon thing to do would be your last name or the last name of a Judge you're going as. I'm going with PATCH, my last name. So DREDD would be good, you can also just go with LAWGIVER if you want to use it as a place to identify the prop. I can fit 11 characters on there before readability drops so go nuts!

If you really don't want it, you can leave it as is, but obv the build team Craig(code) Spidey74 , Paul(machinist) BeakZ , and I(models/electronics, and yet another Chris btw) def want one on ours :D

Hope this provides some context!

We should all go with our RPF names :)

I believe his email when he asked said more more than 11 characters. Many of have RPF names longer than eleven characters. I do like the idea though will have to come up with an idea…L. Love the inset idea and the eagle on the other side is cool touch. How about all Judges can do their names for First initial, Middle initial if you have some, Last name initial and finally year of birth. Anyways just spiff balling. Mine can say….Ssspppaaaccee GGGHhoossttt!!! Just kiddin…L

Just waiting to hear from 4 more people before I start engraving and cutting the brass plates. Without sharing any private info here's the cheat sheet of what other's have chosen:

1 Lawgiver, 1 for the run number, 2 RPF name, 2 personal handle, 2 Dredd, 7 last name

(edit: numbers high because this includes the personal ones the build team is doing)

Sorry for being quiet on big updates but I've entered a phase known as 'the slog'. It's just days of sanding and soldering at this point for most of the week but it's progressing really quickly. I'm trying to do at least 4 hours a day and I've been averaging 8~10hrs a day over the weekends. These are a lot of work!

Rather than small batching the electronics and making a lot of messes over and over and forgetting where I am I've decided just to power the entire thing as one giant batch.

I've broken it into 13 'kits' and I'm working through each in complete operations with 39 operations, 3 per kit. The first operation is getting the parts together, cutting the wire, and crimping. The second is soldering and heat shrinking each into it's stand alone component. The final is soldering each onto the CPU, coding, and loading on the sound. There's 18 completed operations so I'm pretty far along, I'm aiming to be done all this week.

I have 14 kits to do: 9 for run, 2 for me, 3 for kits (4th kit is in Europe and will be done by Beakz). You can only see 13 of some things because the little boxes are 'templates' with one unsoldered and one soldered in each, that way I can cut everything to size and make sure all the wiring is right, I'll use the completed one as a kit at the end.

Here's one complete component:

And another just because I like pics at steep angles:

There will be a code update in a few days to increase the hold down delay for the mode change. On rapid it encourages you to hold down the trigger long enough to mode change due to the length of the sound, and my wife is also super slow on the trigger and keeps getting fire and mode change mixed up. So the delay will be increased to 3 or 4 seconds. Craig also improved the rapid lighting effects so they strobe like they should.

I also have to do a lot of the final audio still, no ETA on that but it will ship with final sound. I pulled what I could from the movie and cut out BG noise, so a lot are pretty clean, but there's still a few fudged sounds I swapped out or had to kill some important frequencies on and I have to recompose them to match the sound from the movie.

Very cool badges. Doesn't Anderson just have a PSI division badge or is that just the comics?

PSI Division in the comics, but regular badge in the Judge Dredd movie(Anderson was not in Stallone Dredd movie) and Dredd 2012. This Judge is ready to hits the street and local Cons. Time to JUDGE some perps and on through to the iso cubes :)

Copy that Props3D we’re are just having a little fun with the project. Never ever rush a good thing is one of my rules. Folks on the run are just excited and take your time everyone knows mistakes are made when rushing. You right about the Iron Triangle patience’s and more patience’s are key in project/runs. :)

Haha, I wasn't getting all bent out of shape, just poking a bit of fun back.

To get things on track, it's resin part finish day:

I couldn't find an airbrush turntable I liked so I made one, I'm tired of balancing bits of wood on a turntable only to have them fall off and have to sand it all down again so I made the entire top the removable part.

I published it here if you want to make it: Painting Turntable | Top Swappable | Support Free by Props3DPro

Still soldering!!

Holy ordeal batman. Just have the ID verification LEDs now, will take pics of all the kits later today or tomorrow.

Every update photo is just mind blowing. I don't know how you guys create these things because it's just way over my head. I'm just glad I got into the order line. I would do disappointed if I missed this.

Done all the non-3D printed parts! Woo hoo! This is all the electronics soldered in components, the metal parts, the screws, and the knicknacks.

All boxed up now. I'm going to solder the components together on the first 4 finals and the kits over the weekend while I'm doing the finishing work on the first 4 bodies. The little boxes at the end are for YouTube and 'Lawgiver 11' is my safety in case something doesn't work.

Greetings Judges

A quick photo update for you on my paint progress:

PXL_20220920_192352422.jpg

All the major parts almost ready for finish coats

Everything but the bodies and bases have two coats of paint and are ready for the third. The bases have one coat at the moment and need a couple more. The Barrels, triggers and suppressors are ready for their clear coat next.

PXL_20220920_192657124.jpg

Three bodies with Flat Black matt paint

I love how the flat black matt is looking so far, and getting close to being able to clear coat them and get everything put together.

PXL_20220920_192435187.jpg

Shiny orange safety barrels

The orange barrels were printed with orange PLA, sanded smooth and gloss clear coated. The Lawgivers will ship with these installed, just as an extra precaution (they might be of use for conventions as well).

That's all from me for now. Pushing to get the painting finished, and then installing the brass name plates when they are finalized and CNC'd. Electronics are being put together in between waiting for paint to dry and the day job.
