Definitive GTI Dick Tracy Watch Thread

Always wanted that watch. It seems every time they appear on eBay, the speaker function no longer works. Interesting to see it in this thread with the back off; the last one I saw on auction, the guy said he had taken it to two jewellers and both said the speaker battery was non-replacable. Yet the pics in this thread clearly show three acessible batteries.

I do have a version of this watch, I forget the name of the maunfacturer. It's sort of one up from the Playmates toy; it has a digital clock face like the Playmates version but it actually has a talking function ("Calling Dick Tracy! Calling Dick Tray" when you push the button). It has a black leather strap with yellow stitching; the watch itelf is not as wide as the Playmates but is a little thicker. It's not terribly accurate but it's a good attempt. I may have a pic lurking on my hard drive somewhere, will check later

hey hey

these pics were on another dick tracy thread here on the rpf maybe they might be useful?

so, which one's real? the one n the right is the GTI and the left is the movie?

yes the left one is from the movie. I actually have the movie at home, i watched it two nights ago, when i get home i will take screenshots for you if you want. pm me your email and il get them to ya.

all the best screenshots of the movie watch are on my flickr account posted in the first post. The movie watch pictures are clearly labeled. check em out! The measurements I posted are from my GTI (replica) watch. It is meant just as a starting place.

Zenix, you are taking on a big job and I for one and REALLY eager to see what you come up with.

The batteries are embedded in the talking circuit. It would take some scraping to get em out and replace them. I will be attempting it soon and get a nice recording of the mechanism.

Xenix-

Have you thought of using the lost wax method? I remember seeing a behind-the-scenes show on cable that showed the original maker of the prop remaking the watches for the show. He used the lost wax technique to make his watches.

ummm!!! :eek Can you remember the title of this show? i would LOVE to get a copy and pull some screen shots. I have been looking to contact the maker or the prop master for a while (no addresses to be found).

I wish. It was years ago, and even then, I caught the show maybe half way into it. I seem to remember (my memory isn't what it once was) it wasn't focused on the Dick Tracy movie specifically but was about the making of movies in general. It just so happened to have this brief gem in it.

So have a nice crucible now, and special sand to push the watch into to make a mold. then i can pour the aluminum into the mold. if it comes out nice, how much are people willing to pay, do you think?

my other method is to put a wax copy into plaster, and fire the plaster in a kiln... lost wax casting. I also have aquired a kiln to use for this purpose. both of these methods are a lot of work, plus my time modeling the part, and paying for it to be 3d printed, plus all the materials add up.

I'm willing to pay, depending on price and finished product. This is really exciting work, and I can't wait to see how it turns out.

I know the pics of the real prop are posted in this thread, but because of network restrictions while i'm at the office, i cannot see them. if someone could attach the pics to an email and send them to me, that would speed up this project. tblatt@gmail.com

This is something I'd definitely like to add to my watch collection! I'm watching this thread with great interest! I just recently picked up a Michael Knight communicator replica and I've got a James Bond Omega Seamaster Professional, as well as a Men In Black Hamilton Ventura. Not a huge collection yet, but a start nonetheless.

ok i finished the model of the movie watch, instead of replicating the gti watch. mines awesome now. pics to come soon. i'm going order a 3d printed one and start different methods of replication
