DaveP's Luke RotJ V2 Research/Development Thread 2021

Take (Heavy) Alec Guinness’ real partsMK1
v
Recreated and simplified by lathed wood master buck
(in Gus Lopez’ possession)
v
Put into 2 part sand cast or similar
v
Pulled multiple foundry metal castings
(V2 / V3 and others)

- V2 was cleaned up healthily on metal lathe… almost all seam lines removed.

- V3 had minimal cleanup with visible seam offsets

V3 was reCast in non-metal for stunt work
--> V3 cast was machinist basis for yuma

That’s what we know for sure so far- but they almost are guaranteed to have had extra parts and maybe even another full stunt version or two available with the metal parts.
This is great, thanks! So the V3 that is seen in the throne room fight is aluminum? and not resin?

Yep, on my phone so I cant easily link the threads but they come up in the search function. You'll notice that the stunts were painted to mimic the hero - a really common thing in movie production - so some grays and blacks and bronze you'll notice.. and they were all different. The closer they are to first use, obi wan's stunts, are the newest paintjob. Over the years they got damaged or redone.. etc. The way casts are made, hard details like the grip rings are from the master and just copied to all the casts. Resin was not a choice back then for hard choreography like fencing, those were the metal casts. The v2, the one this thread is about, (and not the one in that photo above) got the most clean up on a lathe so its skinnier and ended up as a belt hanger in Jedi. Thicker casts were used for fencing.

Maybe I am missing something, but I would think the ANH Motorized Stunt that Dave is selling is based on the saber I am asking about.

Is the motorized stunt the “Luke/Ben shared stunt2”/“V3”?
There were multiple motorized stunts made. DaveP’s run is of the V2, which is one of the most famous motorized stunts

This image is in Dave's sale thread. Are any of these the V2? How do you tell it is that one?

The bottom right and left pics are the V2. You can most easily tell (in these pics) by the pommel cubes. The V2 has what look like longer thinner cubes, and by comparison the shared stunt/V3 has more square shaped pommel cubes. I’m focusing on the shape of the outermost plane of the trapezoidal pommel cubes.

If the emitter is a lighter color, and it's not just lighting or whatever, my first guess would be that it's just worn paint from Alec Guinness's thumb, and not from any attempt to mimic the hero prop. I wouldn't think they'd go to that much effort for stunt props

Exactly, the V2’s paint changes through out it’s sort time on film.. well 3 days of use..
