Building the 8' Star Destroyer (superstructures done)

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

Aawwww, c'mon Julien... you're killing me here. I realise 'Rome wasn't built in a day' but I'm desperate for some more updates, mate :unsure

Of course my modelling ability ended with making Snap-Fix kits when I was 7 or 8 years old :$ Can't be that more difficult to create an 8-foot scratch-built model of an Imperial Star Destroyer, after identifying the thousanda of kit-bashed parts from all those commercially available kits ?

Seriously though, kudos to you buddy... I can't believe that the original makers of the 8' ISDwould be able to achieve what you have, 30 years+ after creating the original :thumbsup

Keep up the good work! :)

Cheers,
John

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

Great work. You amaze me with each update.

Thank you K !

Outstanding, the detailing is over the top! So how many kits went into this so far, did you happen to make a kit list?

Do you have any pics of the Starboard side?

Thanks Jay, I dont know how many kits exactly... I have between 350 and 400 kits, including multiple of course... and I need more ! :)

No list, and it wont happen, I dont have the time for such a big model. Most of the answers can be found in my other thread though, of course not every parts is named but most of the job is done.

There are pics of the unfinished starboard side in this thread, please check a few pages back.

he must have auto-ship on glue and styrene

It would be so cool ! :)

This thing is so sick!

Actually I think this model makes me sick ! :lol

pretty. So jealous!!!!

Dont be jealous Dave, actually that's just acrylic and styrene, nothing more...

Greatest Studio Scale build of all times!!! The time, money and effort is astonishing! All original kits right? You're not using any castings????

All original kits yes, some of the parts are castings though (there are 6 castings, now I have more original parts so I could replace them, but too much work lol), that's not bad considering I've glued more than 2500 parts so far. I will use more castings though, like the Entex parts because this kit is too expensive and I likely prefer to buy 100 Gneiseneau and King George V to complete this one to get thousand of parts than buying a single kit for 4 parts which are actually half pipes. :lol

Wow Julien. You've really kicked the bar so high on this one its out of sight! - just a joy to watch :)

I'm just amazed that you will have the space to display this once its done.

N

Thank you Nick, coming from you it means a lot ! :)

I havent found a place to display it yet, so I will probably stand in my shop ! :lol I tried to convaince my fiancée so many times to put it in the living room, but, that's weird and I dont understand why, she does not want.

I have no words, this is just incredible.

Thanks Stonky !

Tox, is one crazy French man. this is so cool. its going to be crazy to see this finished. i cant wait.

Thanks Al, cant wait to see your Betty finished, I think there are much more work involved in the recreation of the Betty than the ISD.

I think my head might explode from the sheer awesomeness of this build!!

Thanks again for sharing...

Thank you for following this thread ! :)

Hi Juilen,

Absoultely, anything for SS model can't be compared to your ISD...:thumbsup

thanks Eric.

Thanks Eric, I think several SS models can be compared to the ISD... Some come to mind like the Death Star, the original ISD (less parts but the kits are probably harder to find !), the Battlestar Galactica, I guess the first one to work on one was a hero as it was probably the biggest SS model ever done by a casual modeler !

And of course your SandCrawler, you're the first one to make the crawler Eric, I would have love (and I hoped !) to be this first one, but I'm just glad you built it, so well. This one is really a tricky one because of all the angles, ANH donor kits that are always a ***** to find and not to mention that yoou made it R/C. Just making it R/C is probably the biggest challenge of this project, having something that actually runs, and runs well, is not easy but yours looks to run fine ! I'm so glad you didnt give up and you made it R/C.

Ah...he'll never finish it.

M.T. I'll buy it off you cheap.

Seriously though, I can't help but wonder how you can do so much work on this while having a family and a Day job, unless you're filthy rich. We are all so envious of you as you are doing what every one else dreams of doing.

You're probably right, but at least I'll have the superstructures done, and that's already a nice display model and the good thing is that I can add the hull at any time ! :lol But I really want to build the whole thing.
I reckon now that I will get married next year, I'll have less time (and probably less money !) to put into modelling, but I think I still have plenty of time to live to finish the model ! :D

Perfectly understandable mate... if you added some parts to your ISD, only to disover in a previously-unseen pic in The Making of TESB book that it was incorrect, that would be a real shame :unsure

And it's given me another reason to look forward to the release of this book.... 2 days after you receive your copy of the book, you'll treat us all to some more update pics! :love

Let's hope there's lots of previously unseen pics of the 8' ISD when this book hits the shelves :)

Cheers,
John

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

Ok so when will you be casting this up?:love I could only imaging how impossible that would be but this would the ultimate garage kit. Kudos. I would build a support structure and get a custom glass top and make this my off limits former dining room table.

I dont think there will be more unseen 8' ISD pics in the book !

A quick update, thanks to Cyril for the acrylic parts with the chamfreined edges !

Tox, I think you took the 'do or do not, there is no try' saying a little too far...

:lol

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

Whoa!!!!!!! :eek :eek I was looking at the 7-foot Yamato in the other section and thought the guy was crazy. But you are an absolute madman!!!!:wacko

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

Anything I've had a go at building up to now, looks stone age compared to this..

Totally brilliant Julien !!, I dunno what else to say :cool:cool:cool:cool(y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

Even though I know now, from experience, that I'm going to be amazed every time I open this thread to find that Julien has posted new progress pics, without fail I come away even more impressed and inspired than I ever thought possible.

In fact, I will confess to staying up late on the occasional Friday or Saturday night, going back to the very first post in this thread and over in the corresponding parts ID thread, and reading through every message and ogling every photograph all over again. It's like some kind of studio scale porn...

The words "epic" and "awesome" are way overused today and have lost some of their meaning as a result. Even so I can think of no two words that more accurately describe what Julien is doing with this build, and the fact that so many people from our community have pitched in to identify parts and offer him support.

Epic.

Awesome.

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

This is way too outstanding for me not to jump in. Drool! Kick ass work, man!

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

T-t-t-te-te-te-ten D-d-d-a-a-y-y-s-s without a reply. I'm suferring withdrawal symptoms, here :wacko :lol

Unfortunately I can't assist with ID'ing parts, but the very least I can do is give this thread a BUMP so it stays on Page 1 where it belongs :thumbsup (should be a sticky thread IMO?)

Keep up the good work Julien! We're all rooting for ya!

Cheers,
John

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

Hey Julien,

I've just received my copy of 'Making of The Empire Strikes Back' in the mail this morning!

Star Destroyer coverage is a bit light, but on Pages 192-193 there are some nice pics of it's construction (including the pic you posted of the Fibre Optics being installed)

If your copy hasn't arrived yet.... don't get TOO excited :unsure
Although your expert-eye may be able to spot some lil' detail that I wouldn't notice?

Otherwise seems like a good read - particularly like the pic of Carrie Fisher, John Hollis and some helmet-less Stormtroopers chillin' on the illuminated steps of the Carbon Freeze Chamber (although it's in B & W :thumbsdown)

Cheers,
John

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

Thank you guys !

Kevin, thanks for your words, you know I appreciate them !

Jon, I've ordered the book 3 times, my order was cancelled twice (out of stock :angry), I hope the third will be the good one !
Well that's not very important if there's nothing new about the ISD, I think I'll find some news pics of other models I dont have ! :D

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

I have looked through this thread page after page watching with delight as this Star Destroyer grew and took shape and knowing that it still is not done. I am very impressed and loled at your crystal balls (Dirty Mind Yes) I am very sorry that your order of a book that you are trying to order was canceled twice which I am very optimistic that you will find that blasted book. I do already know that this model will be great museum quality and will probably go up for some $15,000.00 Starting price if sold on auction or what ever.

After calculating the size in length I came up with 64' if you chose to do a Executor at this same scale. This is knowing that the Executor is 8X the length the regular ISD which is what you are building. So that being said and if you DO choose to go down that route which you do have my wish of God Speed to thee. Then Good luck and hope you do have the space for it. After all it will not be exactly the smallest model to ever be built.

Back on this current one I also give you my wish of God Speed to thee. Can't wait to see it finished and I am running out of things to say XD

Cheers

^^ QFT ^^

I'd certainly pay at least $15k for a model of this quality and scale (of my favourite Star Wars spaceship :love)

But I think Julien will want to hold onto this masterpiece for a verrrryyy long time, considering all the blood, sweat and tears that he's put into it :)

Cheers,
John
