Building the 8' Star Destroyer (superstructures done)

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

Julien-
How's everything holding up structurally? I've been curious as to how the weight shifts are behaving, if there are any issues? I think it's still got to be a bit heavy toward the rear but balanced by the overall length now, yes? I don't think you had initially planned the support for the entire model... ???

You have the patience of a saint J, to place all those styrene chips!.
Just incredible work my friend, the latest pics are just jaw-dropping stuff!.

I love it when you update us Julien. Such a great build!

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

:eek (speechless...)

Well, almost... you must be nearly blind from all that small detail work! It's hard to tell if I'm looking at the Star Wars archives photos or your model :love

Incroyable Julien,

I built a wooden frame, trying to mimic the original :

Unfortunatly I didnt have the pic above when I built my frame, that's why mine isnt 100% accurate and it has 4 holes instead of 3.

With this frame , the whole thing is strong as hell, and the superstructures frame will be screwed to the hull frame (you can see in the pic of the original model that there are 4 wooden blocks, the screws go through them).

Today I built the master for the guns.

I need to fill some seams lines, but I'm happy with what I ended up.

Each guns is made of 5 parts, this parts, 2 guns supports and the 2 guns (which are kitparts, not castings).

You'll have to start over from scratch, I should think...:lol

New panels and gun pattern are looking really, really crisp, Julien. Better than the original, as usual!

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

Lol thanks guys ! :lol I prefer KB's option :p

KB, looks at the parts of the turret... Found some parts from the new kit we found for the MF ! That's why Ive waited so long to build the master, I didnt know what were those parts !! :lol

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

Amazing... just amazing! Doesnt get better then this. :love

Will you try to capture eventual mistakes on the originals? I guess since they had so many things to do, there were a few. Or will you do it as perfect as possible?

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

Thanks guys.

They built at least 3 (maybe 4) patterns for the brim trenches then cast them.

Here's the pattern #1 :

WOW!, that crane is just amazing J, so intricate in the details.
How you assertained that they used a pattern for the brim trench sides is beyond me mate, but I guess you live & breathe SD at the mo dude!.

I too cannot wait to see you construct the hull J, oh to be there in person!.
You must feel looking at all your work so far mate, absolute joy in seeing this creation come to life, I know I would.
Awesome update Julien.

Re: Building the 8' Star Destroyer (portside primered, lots of pics)

Thank you guys, im glad you like !
Stu, this pattern is used at least 3 times (more kitparts added to the castings on the hero side). Each pattern is used more or less 3 times, and airbubbles dont like, those are castings ! They even used portion of y-wing castings ! Some portion of the trenches are 100% kitparts though. It's easy to see if thats a casting or not, the shelves of the castings are not flat but have an angle while the shelves of the portion detailled with kitparts are stock, flat, styrene strips. You know they even used castings on the 32" mf instead of real kitparts (im thinking to a gepard part used on the right mandible wall. They could have used an original kitpart but for some reason they didnt. This part casting is also used on the ISD superstructures.
For the trench castings, thats obvious they saved a lot of time, same apply to the turret !
