Batsuit: Arkham Origins V2

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Just a little update. Made a new chest piece out of foam(sixth one was the charm), added a layer of terraflex and then a layer of vinyl. Just finished weathering the chest by actually scuffing up the vinyl with the dremel to include the bullet hole. Added a little bit of black acrylic here and there to give the illusion of powder burns from the gunshot as well as just some run of the mill grime. Also redid my chest emblem, made the wingspan a little wider and cut the ears to complement the contours/lines of the upper chest. Need to start weathering the abs now.

Can't wait to see how you do the shoulders... I made a first attempt at shoulders last night and the pattern that I tried did not work out at all, unfortunately... :( I ended up watching a couple of Evil Ted videos, so I think that I have a better handle on it now, but I'm curious to see how you do it simply because my costume is so similar in design to the one you are building. Everything looks great right now!
Thanks man! I have some other projects I need to give some time to tonight but I expect to start on the shoulders maybe tomorrow.

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Finished weathering the abs. Added another bullet hole for in-game accuracy and threw on a couple scratches and several thin layers of black acrylic for that nice dirty worn look. Also started gluing on some of the suits eyelets, giving it some nice contrast... It's coming along.

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Been working on some gauntlet commissions that have kept me from working on my own suit. But I did manage to hand sew some Velcro into my undersuit jacket. I then used barge cement to glue the other half of the Velcro to my chest piece. Worked out really well. Going to have to do the same thing for the abs. I'll post pics when I finish with that. Until then just a pic of the gauntlets I'm working on for a customer. I'm experimenting with adding 3 coats of wood glue prior to dip, primer and paint.

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Was able to work briefly on my costume last night and was minimally productive. I was able to at least hand sew the Velcro to the jacket to support the chest and abs tonight and then drafted up a template for the shoulders(which I test fitting). The biceps are from my old origins costume and need to be remade/resized for the refresh and the gauntlets are unfinished commissions I'm working on but I just threw them on to get a feel for how the costume is coming along.

Do you have a picture of the shoulder shape? This is really looking awesome!

I think I sent you an picture of the shapes I cut to make my shoulders via FB. I don't have a scanner handy so sorry about that.

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Finished the shoulders a few days ago. Last night I finally Sewed the Velcro into the shoulders of the jacket I'm using as an undersuit. Afterwards I thought it was a good time as any to try it on and I think it came together pretty good. Need to step it up though. NYCC is less than a month away!

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Hi. My husband has never been the type to dress up for halloween... but wanted to be batman this year. All the costumes we saw were so cheesy so I started reading online and came across your build and it is sooo impressive. I have never done anything like this but I went out and bought foam, dremel, heat gun etc and started this last weekend. Couple questions.... how did you get that ab plate sunken in like that? And on the gauntlets do you plasti dip each piece before gluing together or paint all at once? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the compliment and Id also like to say I think it's awesome you're helping your husband out with this kind of thing.
the abs are six individual pieces cut out of half inch foam. They are then beveled at the edges using a dremel with a worn sanding drum to give them that rounded look.i then glued the pieces to a sheet of 2mm craft foam spacing them as I desired. After this I cut the surrounding foam so I was left with one large ab piece.
i then made a frame to encompass and surround the ab pieces by tracing the ab piece over a 5mm foam sheet.
now you can do this all in foam if you like and it will look perfectly fine. I took extra steps and tacked down upholstery vinyl over all my foam pieces to give it a more realistic look and texture. I also used a thermoplastic(terraflex) to harden the frame I made around the abs so it looked more sturdy. It's up to you but for the additional steps it does increase the cost of the build and there is a learning curve to doing it as with anything new.

Now about plastidip, i wait until the pieces are assembled and ready to paint before applying the plastidip. Depending on how smooth you want the surface you can also add a couple layers of modge podge, PVA or wood glue to the surface before adding plastidip. Good luck. If you have anymore questions feel free.

Thanks so much for the quick reply. When I started this project I didn't realize there was a 2.0 version so I made all my chest and ab pieces based off of 1.0. In that version it looked like the ab plate was black and the abs were the gray plasti dip color. That's why I thought maybe you painted, then glued?

Oh. In V1 the abs were made similarly. But the ab frame was cut to shape around each individual ab piece. The ab pieces were painted using gunmetal grey plastidip and the frame painted using black plastidip and then assembled.

Most of the armor pieces were painted first then glued. But for the gauntlets however they were fully assembled before they were painted or plastidipped.

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Really looking great, man. I think I'm to the point where I'll start posting pictures of mine. I took a little break from the suit and actually made a cowl! It looks pretty good, but I'm something of a perfectionist and of course noticed that the ears weren't perfectly symmetrical. Oh well! Looks like I'll be doing a 2.0 at some point. I'm excited to see your next step!

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

I've been following you since the beginning. It's so a great work you did ! It's awesome ! Can't wait to see the complete suit finished and wear ! YOU are trully THE Batman from Arkham Origins ! Amazing.

Re: Batman: Arkham Origins Build - Version 2.0

Started the belt today. Buckle was made of craft foam. Then wrapped in terraflex. Sanded, then coated with 3 layers of wood glue and 3 coats of shellac. Sanding between all coats. Battle damage added with dremel and heat knife. Painted with primer, then hand painted with acrylic.

Belt and pouches are craft foam. Coated with 2 layers of mod podge. 2 coats of plastidip. Hand painted with acrylic. Battle damage added with heat knife.

Decided not to do all the pouches as it's just filler past the ones you see in the front and I also want a space in the back where I can magnetically attach my Batarang. As of these pics I only had one pouch and canister. Right now I'm working on the second pouch. Should be done tonight. Was so excited after attaching the buckle and such to the belt that I decided to suit up and try it on for size. So much left to do but these pics make me feel like I'm almost done.
