AT-AT Driver Costume Construction

Those are so bada$$. I want a freakin' AT-AT to go along with my suit. Thanks RoCKo. I got some of that vinyl trim in, but it is about what I expected. Still workin' on sourcing some thicker stuff. It is my opinion after discussing with others that the original trim is black painted white. however, I'd not like to go that route if I can help it. And the purists cringe. :)

Did anyone mention rose gloves?

these don't have the stitching on the back of the hand, but it could be done, or others might have it.

Those look good. The cuff would need to be shortened. I think I may already have a pair of these. I just never knew what they were used for. Thanks. I'll post a pic soon. I want to get the commpad on there before I do though. :)

Not a whole lot of progress, so I'll just ramble for a minute or two.

In replacing the original hanger 'repros', I discovered that they were screwed into the faceplate. At first, I thought they were glued and almost did some serious damage to the faceplate finish trying to pull one off. Needless to say, I had to fill the holes and repaint those areas. With that done, it was time to have my flightsuit 'taken in'.

I bought a custom made suit that only came in medium or large. I thought better to get too big than to small and I went with large. The arm and leg lengths were ok, but you could fit two of me in the midsection area.

A local tailor here fixed me up and it fits perfectly now. She also said that she could reproduce any suit I wanted for a decent price. Sweet.

I've removed the rear cannisters and I am going to repaint them and maybe get the LED's wired up. The originals appear to be a dark gray with thin, silver trim around the top caps. The right one has a red stripe on top and the left has a black square on the bottom.

I really wish my chestbox wasn't finished. I want the front panel to light up, but I'll have to cut a hole in it. That means cutting through the box and decal and making a perfect rectangle-shaped cutout. I just don't know if I trust myself to make that kind of modification cleanly.

I finally got the commpad painted and plan on assembling it tonight. I thought about just gluing it to the gauntlet, but I think a small bolt with a nut/washer will be more secure.

were there lights on the movie suit clutch?

i wonder how much that lady would charge for say a jedi costume? or what kinds of connections to materials she might have?

some seamstresses can sew...

some can identify materials and paterns just from a PIC...

might want to take in some random unidentified costume pieces etc. and see what she thinks about material and so forth. :love

anywho sounds like your gettin close to the finish line there clutch. get some pics up soon. B)

The man who makes the best AT-AT repro helmets out there says that there were LED's on top of the cannisters that did not work. It would just be a gee-wiz thing on my part because they are so high up, I doubt you could even see them if they were lit. :lol

I can't wait to see some pics of that.
Have you made any more progress on the insides of the side hangers?

sweet. came out very nice. i didnt know the little tabs were clear. looks great. probably better than the screen used ones did. B)

and we have the same old dell keyboard i see. :p

There are lights on the chest box I believe. The wires that lead to the battery pack can be seen in some of the color LFL archival stills.

There is one pic in particular where you can see a stage hand holding the battery pack.

Thanks oldken.

The rectangle of lights on his left are supposed to light up in some sort of sequence. In that picture where he is standing at an angle to the camera, you can see that that section is inset into the chestbox like a window.

BTW, Firespray, I'm still working on those hanger thingies. It is a very weird piece to try and reproduce.

Thanks RoCKo. Really shows off those seperate ears. Clearly shows that the backplate was rivited on. I also suspect the shoulder bells were sewn onto the flightsuit. You can see the holes in them at the bottom edges. The right cannister has some red lines on top as well.

I encased the back thermostat piece in water-clear resin to give it some height and make it look more like the ref. photos.

Wow. Awesome AT-AT costume so far. The research that goes into finding the most accurate items boggles my mind. It is really looking fantastic. The comm pad is also great, excellent work.

WOW! I'm drooling over that helmet.

The AT-AT Driver is my favorite costume from Star Wars.

Nice work so far, folks.
