Art Asylum / Diamond Select TOS Phaser build with metal parts.

That's the one spot I didn't try prying apart. It will damage it? I better not try it then. I was hoping to pop it off for a repaint. I don't have a metal replacement. I'm just looking to fix up a slightly beat up phaser with a little paint. Thanks for the info though :)

Darn it! I was going to use the information in here to pimp out a super cheap "23rd Century Pistol" kit I was bidding for on eBay and lost at the last minute because my phone took too long to render the bidding page. :angry

Those come up on ebay all the time, there's usually several at any given time.

At 99 cents? The seller titled it wrong so unless you were searching specifically for that you were not going to find it. I was only looking because I keep seeing one on Steve Neills bench in his videos.

I'll just get a AA from Sci-Fi-Props and know their upgrades will work AND not have to buy additional electronics from somewhere.

That's what I already did.:lol I'm just starting to tear it apart so I can get it ready to work on.

Starting to get some work done on this. Its all taking apart and the front nozzle has been removed so far, just starting to remove the old side rails. Lets see what I can get done over the weekend.;)

Spacerone, just wanted to tell you that your b&w build looks terrific, certainly better than the original--as if fresh off the assembly line. :thumbsup

I've long been ambivalent about the b&w version, because the gray/black version is so iconic and has more visually pleasing adornments. Also, I didn't like the combination of number buttons and the thumb wheel on the b&w, functionally speaking. I guess the original design considered the thumb wheel for only raising the sighting mechanism/aspirator pile, and then you'd press the number buttons for the strength setting. The gray/black version "combined" the functionality. In the end, it's all superfluous nitpicking anyway, because we never see these controls being used.

I imagine if the budget back during TOS was higher and SFX technology a little better, they might have actually deliberately shown off the phaser parts being actively replaced in an action scene (e.g. removing the P1 for concealed carry or swapping in a power pack). Certainly in "Omega Glory" we could have seen Captain Tracey popping in a power pack, as we actually heard him mentioning them and saw them briefly in Spock's hand.

Anyway, your b&w build makes me want to like it more than ever before. ;)

In that one episode where Sulu almost freezes to death, we see him snap a P1 into the P2 before he heats up some rocks to stay warm. Other than that it's just an occasional fiddle with one of the knobs.

Thanks Cytherian! If they did have a bigger budget I'm sure we would of seen more detail effects with the phaser.

Yep, but it's very difficult to see clearly, especially on VHS or aired broadcasts on TV before the remasters. We only know he's fiddling with his phaser before firing it. The advent of a higher resolution remastered episode helped expose what he was really doing rather nicely.

You're welcome. :) You've certainly built quite a number of phasers at this point. Do you have an objective to build a certain number? Also, what would you say are the things you've learned that have helped the most in improving and streamlining the process?

I would like to have at least six of these built up, but they take a lot of spare time to do.:cry One of the things I learned is to make sure you have altered the body of the phaser completely before you paint because repainting it causes problems. So if you want the side ribs to be straight take them off and put on the new ones. Or if you want to add a window so the P1 can be seen (which is what I plan on doing for this build) do it before you paint. Another thing is to test fit all the new metal parts and make sure they fit properly before and after painting. If the paint is applied heavily and becomes too thick it can make it difficult for some of the parts to fit correctly. That goes for the p1 as well, thick paint will make it not fit into the p2 body cradle correctly and will cause more problems.
