Hey Darkview, forgive me if you have already explained this, but I was wondering how you painted the recessed wells on your falcon? Specifically I am wondering how you got it to have that metallic shine it has? I love the way it looks!

The underside recesses in place, the mag says not to join these at this time (46) but so lve only screwed 2 screws per pit.... Its so l get a total feel for the underside painting....

The lightings dark & shadowed due to bad natural lighting from window but hope you like a close up....

Hi SirCharles77, couple of ways that you get a metallic shine to the recess pits, (light hitting the pipes creates that too)l fill the whole pit with lamp black oils, wipe off till required effect of weathering...
dip your brush in white spirit if you want to spread the effect or remove areas too dark.

1. The thinner when you rub off the black oil can get the pipes etc to shine (especially hard rubbing).
2. Just add a tiny layer of Silver from the Tamiya weathering powder kits. Think it's kit B & C I use.
3. Just old fashion dry brushing.

TIP: Do pipes or any delicate parts separate, even on the runners!

So you didn't do anything special for these than you do for the rest of the model then? Interesting. I was sure you were handling these differently. Thanks for the tips! I guess I already know how you were doing it just didn't realize it!

In regards to the 32" model being for stunts and fast shots, there is one nice long shot of it at the end docked to the Medical Frigate that is really cool, the best shot of it in all its glory that I can think of that is on film. It's fun to look at all the ref pics of the model and compare the paint job to what actually shows up in the shot, shows how much these models are painted to be filmed under studio lights vs displayed.

Just noticed something in this first black and white pic. What is that ring around the center cone? I don't think I've ever noticed that before. You can see glue spots for that part in the second shot as well.

Yep the promo photos of the Falcon in ANH of the front of the dish show weathering & blast marks that are upside down on her now

Also this was the model used in the shot of Lando ripping the dish off In RotJ

Jaitea's threads great for the differences, I'm sticking to as many 32" refs as possible...saying that theirs some bits that I'd want to recreate maybe from the highly detailed 5ft like the back of the radar weathering l did.

Here's the magnet mandible + cargo section part... Had a little trouble with fitting 2 of the magnets to give a flat plate fit to the rest of the Falcon but sanded down the magnets holds to fit perfect, the center mandible needs the red markings so l just added grey ref markings...

Next week lm going to go into tests of making those 'splatter' marks and fixing them, lm not keen on them but lll show the results and my findings on some spare practice plates..both oils & enamel based- with thinners.

SPLAT TESTS
And thank you... Been doing some test runs on those awful spatter/splotches Steve talks about in his video part 4, as he says it's optional to do
but l really didn't like what lve seen up close in the video as well as the distance shots...but it's good to know & l do like that he covers issues like this. What's your views on them...

If I do add them at the end of the build I'd make them subtle like my test plate here... I'll try the rust colour splats later too.
This is my first layer using Matt black enamel part mixed with white spirit thinner..

One thing I would like to try is where you airbrush through a scrubbing pad. It helps create a more refined spatter. So I've been told

I've seen the Falcon up close and although the spatter is all there, it isn't nearly as heavy as in his video. Imho

Hi Astroboy, id like to see the effect if you do try the scrubbing pad method! I'm going to use my toothbrush & old stiff big brushes I've got come the time as long as my clear Matt lacquer fixes with good results when l receive it tomorrow..

First wow!!!!!!! Best finish on a Deago I have seen.:thumbsup

I am going to be leaving the paint splatter off mine. That may work for a model not seen close up and made for filming but personally I don't like the splatter on the model.

I hope someday I can get mine to look as good as yours.

I have read through the entire thread and tried your technique. My hull work, streaks, etc. don't look nearly as good.

Again, amazing work.

Thanks Thomas, l know what you mean about them splats....looks like a spacecraft pox on the video!!! lm just getting the technique n' practice for the end of the build & if lm brave enough to do it, it will be a very subtle version. Anyway I'm sure you'll do great on your build.

I think the spatters are great for a little weathering texture on a model that is moving on the screen with motion blur, but not a static model. Unless you can keep it very subtle (1 shade darker and lighter than the basecoat), then I think it would look crappy.

This pencil method is kind of interesting.

But I couldn't find anything more about the scrub pad. I had read about it at one point. I was going to try it on my bandai falcon but this pencil thing seems good

Very interesting point sir!

Here lve added a small spray of rust to the black & gray spats, (all just roughs to get into a comfort zone with the techniques) as lve said its only practice for the near end of the build & l will make it very subtle if l do...lve ordered the STAR WARS Sculpting the Galaxy book for further detailed references on this...

Just to NOTE I did mix a pot using the black lamp oil with thinners but it never drys properly, more like soot.
But with enamel it drys in well. I'm waiting for my Matt spray lacquer fixer tho to seal the job properly.

Wow. That looks amazing. Seriously.

But I'd like to add that the pic steve shows in his video from that book looks wrong to me. I think the photo was over saturated or something because those spatter look WAY harsher than they do in reality.
