Y-Wing Building

I have no idea. Right after we talked he had another hurricane coming his way, I'll let him respond when he can. . .

You know you're a modeling geek when someone mentions a hurricane and you think they're referring to a 1/24 kit by Airfix. And with (now Tropical Storm) Jeanne blowing by right outside my window.

Hey guys,

I seldom visit the Studio Scale Modeling forum (or even the Prop Forum anymore for that matter) but I did see this thread and wanted to chime in.

I haven't had a chance to look through this whole thread, so forgive me if this has been mentioned before, but I know there is a Y-wing model on display in the Doheny Film Library at USC. I'm not sure if it's accesible to the general public since I've always shown my student ID whenever I entered, but I'd be happy to check it out and take some pictures if it's still there.

Ryan

I can't speak for everyone, but I would be extremely grateful for any pictures you are willing to take. I would also be willing to set up a web page to host them for everyoneÂ’s use.

Are there any specific requests? Are there certain areas that your don't have good photographic reference for?

I'm pretty sure it's real. It's definitely a kit-bashed piece like the one in the photos you already have. It's also in a small gallery room of props from other films (I remember seeing a Batman suit and a Willy Wonka costume in a case nearby).

Are there some areas of the model that take priority over others? They might not allow photography, so I may only get to snap off a few pictures before I'm kicked out.

hi guys

ive been watching this fantastic thread for a long time now and ive only just been able to become a member so thought id say introduce myself, i do have a y on the bench at present and got my first saturn V a few days back which ive test fitted, found a great source for a dome too and its as spot on to the leggs as far as i can see, collecting as much original material as i can too but looking at some of the sheer talent and dedication here in kind of awestruck, anyways hi.

Anyone have an idea of where to find those L'eggs containers they used for the front nacelle? Or, does any plastics company make half domes of that size? Thanks

Hey Y Wing nuts.

Wanted to share with you all a project we have been working on for the last two years. Heres some background on the project.

I was emailed a picture of a scratch built studio scale TIE Fighter from a chap in England about 2 years ago. To be honest It wasnt "Movie" accurate, but this guy had talent. He also showed me some pics of the a Y wing he was working on. Once agian not "movie accurate" but when I saw the picture of his Y Wing my jaw dropped to the floor. He sees the darn thing, If you know what I mean, Understands substructure. Nick you are a true artist.

At that time I told him to stop what hes doing and asked if he would consider building the ultimate Studio Scale Y wing. I would assemble a team of Y Wing experts to include vintage kit collectors, provide reference pictures and kits part knowledge to him and help guide the build from start to finish.

At this point I had relized that some folks are already way ahead of us in building this baby so we were not looking for a handout and started our own group.

Besides Nick the builder (a FX man by trade) and myself (swpropmaker) the first to join us was Dan L. aka "Vinyl Guy" a member of this forum and one hell of a guy. He is one of the most generous men Ive ever known and am darn glad I've got to know him. He also helped Identify kit parts and provided many rare kits to be used for the buildups on my TIE Fighter and TIE Interceptor projects, a true master. Thanks Dan.

Second on the list was Dan S aka "1138" also a member, the most brilliant kit part finder I've ever known. A true master of the art (and we all know what an art it is) Both men are huge vinatge kit collectors and have model kits I never even heard of. Dan is credited for finding parts in kits that we have looked in sevral hundred times... he finds the "hard to find" stuff. Dan S Thank you.

Being a Studio Scale builder myself (shamless TIE Fighter plug) I understood this was not going to be easy. You just cant ask the forum for a kit list ... it doesnt work that way.

So the kit part Identifiction began. 8 months or so later Nick (our builder) had enough parts to correctly lay out the sub structure base of the Y Wing. It looked good but was quite bare. I think we had like 25 to 30 kits Identified but not sure of the number exactly.

We got to a point where we needed to bring in the big gun. BASHER.. thats right, the one and only, We contacted Doug and showed him pictures of the progress. We also shared some kit information that he (believe it or not) did not have Ok it was a couple kits... If you guys know Doug aka (Basher) He agreed to get on board and we combined information and the Y wing took shape to what you see today. A total of 55 vinatge kits were found and used on the y wing. We even found the kit that makes this into the "Radar Jammer" as seen at the Celebration One. You know the one Y Wing with RED markings.

The pictures Im sharing today are not all of what is already made just a bit of a teaser. If you are interested in the Y Wing and want to know more please email at studioscaleywing@comcast.net

Oh my god. Awesome work. I can only imagine the amount of reseatch that went into sourcing every part. You guys have done an incredible job.

You sure kept the lid on this one, wow. I'm betting most folks around here are too much in shock to reply just yet. . . :D

That looks like one big ship. Any provisions for some sort of internal armature to keep everything nice and straight???
