WIP - BSG S-01 Blaster (1st Prop) and Scratch-built Holster!!!

Re: WIP - BSG S-01 Blaster and Scratch-built Holster!!!

Every time I see one of these builds i'm dissapointed that they stopped using them after the first season. I know why they did it, but it's still a shame.

Well, mostly. From what I remember Helo spends part of the second season running around with one on Earth for the sake of continuity.

Re: WIP - BSG S-01 Blaster and Scratch-built Holster!!!

I TOTALLY AGREE!!! The season - 2 "blaster" was just too real world (our world) for me and the show lost a tiny bit of its other people other time aspect from the beginning of that season onward.

I know devoted fans of Battlestar TOS will hate me for this but looking at the S - 1 holster I wonder if certain aspects of that design could be somehow integrated into a new holster design for the old Colonial Laser Pistol??? Note, I always loved the old holster but the thing always looked a bit too "open" for me.

Oh well, maybe one day I will bash something up when I get around to buying the old pistol.

Been busy with work, the house and yard and the kids end of year stuff (concerts, talent shows and the like) and so I haven't posted for a while but I have gotten the "primary" painting and clear coat done. Oh by the way as you all notice I went for the "smoothie" by covering up the side cooling fins and switch slots. My Next one will be the more advanced model but given my holster design I wanted to go a bit retro.

I just have to paint and glue in the barrels and the grip (a question on that in a second) and create and attach the belt loops and felt interior to the holster and the project is done. I used Tamiya Gun Metal for the piece and Satin Clear to protect it.

Now I'm at a lost as to what paint color to use on the grip. I have seen grips for these guns in various shades of "Brown" but I don't know which one to get, so some SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!

Thanks to All for Looking!!!

darkev,

The grips you have on the pistol are copies of Pachmayr grips. Here are some real props from the miniseries,
Battlestar-Galactica-MINISERIES-STYLE-CLAMSHELL-BLASTER-SIDEARM-WITH-HOLSTER-1.jpgBattlestar-Galactica-Mini-Series-Style-Hard-Rubber-Clamshell-Blaster-1.jpg78493034443593dc275231054eaa7450.jpgd260ec2e83df99eb0eca6af1fec15e63.jpg

The third one looks like black rubber to me and the rest look as though they are made from wood.

I found these images here - http://archive.propworx.com/1002/1-50/
Hope this helps.

Re: WIP - BSG S-01 Blaster and Scratch-built Holster!!!

Well the grips are finished and while the Rattle-Can paint worked for me next time I will mix my own color and use the airbrush.

I still have to get the muzzles painted and attached and then to get a retaining screw (probably a Chicago) into the grip) and the piece is done. Now to complete the holster. I lined the thing with felt already and I just have to create the belt attachment strap and glue it into the holster (and of course purchase a Tactical Web Belt) and this project is a wrap.

More to come!!!

darkev,

You could try giving the grips a dark ink wash before you seal it. That would make the detail on the grips pop and the best part is if you're not happy you can wash it off.

Bummer!!! I wish I had waited another day but I sealed it with the clear coat already. Is it too late???

Thanks for the advice, definitely trying it for my other BSG Blaster Kits!!!

What did you use for clear coat? You may still be able to do the wash after the clear coat dries and apply another clear cost on that.

Used Krylon Color Master Clear Satin. As I said, I can live with the results I have. Note, I have three (3) more prop pistols to try your approach on including an all black resin licensed Matsuo Clone so I have time to sharpen my skills. Thanks Again for the Advice, GREATLY Appreciated!!!

Oh by the way speaking about grips does anyone know what type and/or manufacturer made the grip used in this S-01 Blaster;

BSGBlaster2.jpg

Thank You!!!

Yes its definitely one of his but I was wondering if he did the grip from scratch himself or was it from the real S&W Model 686. If the grip is from the real gun, I was trying to figure out the actual manufacture since all the grips I have so far found online are not a 100% match to what is seen above.

Give Matty Matsuo a shout, pretty sure the pistol in the image is one of his.

Thank You for the "Lead" Matsuo, GREATLY Appreciated!! I've been incorrectly looking for S&W 686 grips, no wonder I didn't find a match!!

darkev,

The show used S&W Model 10 revolvers. The closest company I can find for the style of grip you want is called Hogue. I have attached two links, one for S&W and one for Colt;
http://www.hogueinc.com/grips/S&W
https://www.hogueinc.com/grips/colt

The thing is that the current grips offered by Hogue are one piece designs ans attach to the bottom of the pistol grip frame and I doubt you'll be able to mount them like that in yours. They also have the back of the grip open to show the frame of the pistol.

I am wondering if the grip Matt used had been modified?

I did find an auction on evilbay that might suit your needs;

Hello Don

Thank You for your research!!! The reason I wanted to find the "wood" grips is because I'm worried about reproducing the wood grain (or polished wood grain) look to the Matsuo BSG Blaster Kit (like the one seen above) I have in the stash. I figured finding the "real deal" would be easy but as you have found out an exact match has yet to be found. Thanks Again!!!

Hello Don

I've been back at searching the net for those grips and while I've found similar grips (some extremely so) the vast majority of them are backless as you mentioned. Unless the thing is no longer in production or when it was used on the S&W model 10 for BSG the back of the grip was filled in by the prop department I just have not found an exact match. Oh well I'm just going to try for a good/presentable wood-looking paint job on the black resin grips that came with the kit.

Darryl,

What do the grips look like that came with this gun? Depending on the piece that the grips cover, you may not be able to use real grips unless you modify either the grips or the 'handle'. I'm starting to think that you may have to adapt the grips that it came with. You could use a round rasp file to create deeper grooves and then polish them with your Dremel. You won't be able to replicate Matsuo's grips but unless he will sell you a set of his, you probably won't anyway.

Don

Hello Don

Well the grips are totally smooth with no hint of a wood grain whatsoever. It should be noted that the kit is not a direct Matsuo but a licensed (from Matsuo) piece done by a well known producer whom many on this board have purchased items from.

That being said I have heard of the rasp file technique you mentioned but never attempted such. Mine you I just looked and found a great tutorial while I was typing this reply;

http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-PVC-Look-Like-Wood/

on doing similar to PVC PIPE so trying it on the resin grip may not be a big stretch. Oh well something new to try to learn
