Lots of even recent films that are released on 4K disc were up-scaled from 2K, whether from the original source or, more commonly, from a 2K digital intermediate. It doesn't mean they are the same thing as an upscaled mass market 1080p Blu-ray version, because the 2K source may be (and usually is) better in other ways than just the pixel count -- higher bit depth, HDR, higher bit rates, larger color gamut, etc.

AotC and RotS may have been a bit more limited because they were pioneering digital cinema, but I would still expect a well-made 4K transfer to look better than the current Blu-ray versions. I admit I don't truly understand all the nuances of this stuff, so I could be wrong, but I'd think it is too early to write them off until we actually see what they do with them.

Admittedly I don't have a great understanding of the process either but I would imagine that 2 and 3 would be difficult to upscale to 4k simply because they are digital images that have been created in pixel form. You can only upscale those pixels so much before they look bad, whereas a film image can be upscaled without the same issue.

If they go back & get the original 70mm prints for the 4k transfer for the OOT... those are going to be astounding 4k disks, visually. If they do the SE for the 4k transfer, that'll be a shame.

There was an article written way back when EP II came out. In it, Rick McCallum was quoted about the custom software ilm had
made to be able to do digital zooms (like they did a few times in the battle at the end) and he said something about blowing it
up 200% and amazingly it still looked good. I don't know if he was just BS'ing or not. I don't expect II or III to look as sharp as the others
when they do eventually release a 4k set.

I certainly would not have been envious of the crew that had to do all that keying for ep 2. It was shot on HDCAM which
isn't even full raster 1920x1080 nor full color space like the much improved HDCAM-SR used in ROTS. The detail in Ewan's hair is just awful in several places in II.

Apologies if this has been covered but what's the opinion on the silver screen edition? In the sandcrawler scenes you can see so much more detail than the blu rays.
It's not just brighter, there are layers in the shadows that just are not there on the blu ray :)

I watch lots of different versions but that one on my projector just takes me right back.
It just feels so unreal watching the first 20 mins especially on a huge screen with my old school stereo, wharfdales 20 feet apart :) ok i'm going to have to watch now...

Whoever invented that, should be taken out back and shot. It's painful to watch.

No they shouldn't. Thing is, it isn't and wasn't intended for normal TV shows or Movies. It was intended for sports and it has a place there and pretty much only there. I guess i'll have to investigate this TN1 version.

Silver Screen Edition and 4K77 are both from Team Negative1. Both are very nice but the image quality is noticeably better in 4K77 (which was realeased in 2 versions - with and without digital noise reduction). My own feeling is the non-DNR version is the closest I've felt to seeing the movie again as a kid back in May of 1977.

Oohh I'm going to look into that, Is it from the same print?

You can download fan edits legally from the "other" bay I believe as long as you own a copy of the film already, most of us have bought it multiple times, I certainly have bought the OT at least five times each movie.
Selling copies I'm not sure about legalywise...
