Lucas screwed us over on the original editions so I see this as a middle finger.
Oh your a middle finger to Lucas guy... I'm more of a shake his hand, tell him how he made me the person I am guy.
I also asked him to sign my copy of the Hero with a thousand faces. Then he sneezed once.
Who only sneezes once, I think he's an alien :)

I never said I was that kind of guy....but you can not deny in this situation he has screwed the pooch. And these fan edits are the middle finger.

Never did I say I hate George Lucas and wish him the worst. I respect him because if it wasn't for him and his fight to get his film idea off the ground I wouldn't be typing this right now.

Ah man , what a set up.. selling tickets??? :)
Remember what I said, this computer projector setup cost £350. It projects at the mo about 85". I just googled how much a 80" TV is. It was £8000.
£350 buys you a 43 to 50" TV.
The projector can go much bigger than 80" by the way. But more than that was too much.

The photo comparisons between the DNR and non-DNR versions show better color and contrast with DNR. I'm downloading the DNR 1080p now and should have it done in a few hours. I've also found 4K83 1080p and have that downloading as well.
Update? You said a few hours....:)

Yarp, Someone mentions that in the comments of the you tube comparisons and apparently they used a little image stabilization this time as the new print was a little wobbly and that's the trade off.
Those pics are another example of the extra contrast in the 4K77 and lesser depth, look at the detail lost from Hans chest Armour.

Hmmm. It's a little more than just cropping. It looks like it's been stretched horizontally, which throws off the proportions. Compared to SSE.

I'm working on it :p

I've skimmed the video and took some caps, matching frames from the DNR and non-DNR 4K77, both 1080p.

The non-DNR has a magenta cast that's gone from the DNR, plus the DNR is a bit brighter. The Tantive corridors are actually white, not green or pink or blue as in other versions. Little improvement in the Sandcrawler shots unfortunately, the color and detail is better but still too dark. The DNR processing is subtle, they didn't completely eliminate the grain they just made it less coarse, allowing the detail to show better. Neither version is perfect, but compared to the alternatives I think the 4K DNR is the best compromise.

Beautiful comps :)
Wow the DNR really is better, how does that work? Crazy. Colour is definitely better by miles.
Is the file still 38gb

40.6gb. DNR (digital noise reduction) works by comparing frames. Anything that is different in every frame (grain, dirt, scratches) is erased, and anything that is present in multiple frames (picture detail) is retained. I assume the color and brightness was adjusted separately, as DNR doesn't affect that.

I almost never pirate movies, TV shows, or songs. I prefer to buy. Somehow it feels cleaner. It's just how I am.

BUT, when companies COULD be selling it, but refuse to for some asinine reason, that's where my sense of moral duty usually ends. Many disagree with me on forums about that, but the numbers say that at least some of them (several million) secretly agree.

Before Pottermore was a thing I actually wrote to the Harry Potter publisher and told them they were morons for not making digital available to buy and that while I would be perfectly happy to give them my money, since they were being stubborn, I inteded to pirate it and they could just get bent. For what it's worth, I did buy the legit version when they finally entered the 21st century and came out with them. I now have the full set completely legitimately. But, prior to that, I felt no guilt and still feel none about the enjoyment I got from my pirated versions.

Lucas was so paranoid about digital piracy that he inadvertently INCREASED the piracy of his product by making that the ONLY way to get digital copies for a while.

Here we've told Disney and Lucasfilm repeatedly that we'd love to give them money. We'd be excited to give them money and would stand in line to do so.

If they don't want it, I'll download. I sleep pretty well at night.

I completely AGREE. There is a demand for the theatrical OT. It's there and this thread is proof. What happens when there is no meet for that demand? Piracy. Disney and Fox can shut them down from a technical view point but they are in this situation because of their assinine reason not to release the OOT. They would just be cleaning up from their mistake.

It's a business they are running and people in a business do it to line their pockets with money anyway they can. So why would they just skip over a huge money making idea that would slow down or potentially stop the OOT piracy?

I have paid my fair share in the official releases and merchandise. I'm with AJTaliesen on this one. I won't lose sleep over a few dollars thrown towards a fan made version that has taken the guts to do the right thing.

I have the Harmy edits, now I think I’ll pick up this SSE. Unless they officially release a version of the OOT that’s as properly restored as these fan-edits, I’ll never buy another official release again.

I'd argue that while there is a certain amount of demand for an unaltered but cleaned up version of the OT I'm not sure that the demand is great enough for Lucasfillm/Disney to want to bother. As much as it might seem like there's a lot of demand I imagine that the numbers, when added, don't amount to much when compared to the overall number of Star Wars fans, of all stripes, and how much the profit margin would be.

I'm sure there are stipulations in the agreement of the sale to Disney that precluded them from releasing the theatrical cuts. Total bull, but that's likely the reality of it. There is a demand. The fact that there are so many fan edits and people downloading them constantly is evidence that the demand is there. Not just of hardcover fans like us but for film historians too.

They appear even more foolish when you have professionals like a certain Mike. Who spent literally years restoring the original Star Wars, for free. As in "here is a free restoration, do what you want with it".
They would just have to pay to print the discs and distribute them.
But no.

Well i downloaded 4K77, in 4K just for a look see and my computer can't even handle it properly lol, never mind at 52 gigs i won't miss it :)

Ok, not so smart on my part. I got the 4K DVD but I don’t have a 4K DVD player.... I have a pretty old first gen Blue Ray but it won’t play it. Uhhhh....

Anyone recommend a good but not overly expensive player?
