You can make what ever you want - making a hybrid, taking items you like but with the intent it came form that world. Sometimes people get to stuck on the facts and forget to have fun. Details count but what you want counts more.

Being accurate isn't less-fun, it just depends on what are your plans for the costume (contest, display, conventions, halloween, etc).

That design looks quite amazing anyway, and you'll feel very comfortable at the con as well, with less lights going off because of sweat, movement or people pushing you by accident . You could even make some rinzler moves! haha

Everyone has a different view of costuming and cosplay. I understand both points, yours and Megatron's, and I agree with your last point. Some people are into costuming for competition reasons, while others do it for fun.

While I costume for fun, I do like to try and be as accurate as I can, but sometimes I have to make changes for various reasons (money, materials, time, comfort). I know my first Rinzler costume wasn't 100% accurate (I wish it was). I know things are missing, but I'm still proud of what I did, and I had fun wearing it. In the end, that's all that matters: if YOU are proud of your work and if YOU enjoyed yourself.

Do it the way you want to. If that means being completely accurate, then kudos! I wish I could do that. If it's trying your best, then kudos as well. I'm there with you. If it's taking a design and altering it, then another kudos! I love seeing people's designs for both original and existing characters.

So no, accuracy doesn't mean 'less fun', but if you get too absorbed into being 100% perfect... you could just end up being miserable. Hope that made sense.

And as for the last part, I know what you mean about people running into you. I got a few rips in my Rinzler costume (mostly on the shoulders) from people running into me. And your last point is another reason why I'm excited for this version. My first costume has a lot of delicate wiring on the inside, so I couldn't pose very well. I was really looking forward to doing his poses too because I had practiced. I'm very flexible, thanks to gymnastics, so I can do a few of his moves. With this new version I plan to use reflective tape so I can move. I'd like to have lights, but if I can't pose myself properly, then I'll go with the tape.

So I've been lurking this forum for months now, I have found a lot of helpful info on here. Im planning on doing a virus rinzler. The costume looks a lil like castors but black with green light patterns using the tron t on the chest. Planning on a green and black wig with silver contacts. Calling it Lady Rinzler. I wanna know what u all think of this take on the costume. Design concept the grey is black.

Base suit: black lycra/ latex cat suit.
Over coat/ armour: matte vinyl
Lights: green LED using either shower curtain or foam to diffuse the light.
Discs: price wise depends on what I find there hard to find these days. I might mod the frisbees ton discs to have lights.
Mount: Inverted plunger with magnets

I like the idea of a virus infected Rinzler. You could have a lot of fun with make up and prosthetics since you plan to show your face. I would definitely have a look at Abraxas and other virus infected programs from the Tron PS3 video game for inspiration.

Everyone has a different view of In the end, that's all that matters: if YOU are proud of your work and if YOU enjoyed yourself.

That's it =) i have fun just by working on the costumes at home, with some good music and time to spare, the manual work is incredibly relaxing. And of course, perfection it's impossible but doing things the best I can is just what I strive for (especially with movie costumes with large budgets and resources lol).


That virus rinzler design is quite cool! the Grid definitely needs more coat designs!

A nifty idea, but I feel that you may have quite a lot of trouble getting the EL wire to stay on your face with just latex. It's not as cooperative as you might think. If you're good at sculpting and prosthetics, then this idea will be much easier to accomplish.

You could sculpt the infected area, creating enough space for the wire underneath, as well as making it thick enough so it only glows/shows where you want it to. Then you can apply that with latex.

I've never done a sculpt, so I'm just spit-balling, haha.

Ive messaged a bunch of my theatre friends to get there ideas on this. I gave them specifics on how its not supposed to look like a scar but very clean straight lines (one of them works in a costume shop). I didnt give them specifics on the EL Wire except that it doesnt glow hot so theres no risk of burning myself.

Are they creating a latex piece for you? Or are they helping you with the costume?

I really would look into making, or having someone else make for you, a custom made prosthetic. Placing the wire on your face with spirit gum, and then going over it with latex will not hold, or look clean (not saying you're going to do that, but it's the only thing I can see someone doing without a prosthetic). Heat isn't the issue because EL wire doesn't get very hot. It's more so the texture. There's nothing for the wire to grab onto.

By having a custom prosthetic that can house the wire, it will be much easier to apply and it will look like it's embedded into the skin.

Greetings Fellow Programmers! Well, I'm please to say that I had some spare and patient time to finally design my own Identity Disc! I had posted here some help in some rush to get one done before Halloween and since the bad storm of Sandy hit my area and lost of power for over a week(NOT GOOD and still too many lost so so much - PLEASE DONATE to Red Cross if you can - thanks!), there was change of plans and I was able to get back to the project at a good slow pace. Before I post the beginning-to-end pics of the disc's turnout, I wanted to THANK 'Frac' on here for the very helpful tips as well a good source of vids up on youtube. :thumbsup Now, let me get on to the posting of the pics, shall we?!

I'm going to start work on my Rinzler / Tron suit soon and wow this thread is a wealth of information! I'm trying to decide if it's worth getting / making hexagonal fabric or just getting something off-the-shelf like a compression suit. I know a number of members here have made their own fabric using screen printing or other methods, but I thought I might ask how difficult is it to screen print and have the hexagons align with the next application? I'm somewhat of a perfectionist and already see myself getting frustrated with the process and final product

i will be able to make the prosthetic myself just watched like 15 different youtube videos on how to do it. its going to involve modeling clay, plaster, and liquid latex. now attaching the el wire to the prosthetic because its the only el wire i will really be using for my costume as i have opted for LEDs im going to use some glue dots that i have from my very poor attempts at scrapbooking (lol) to attach it to the prosthetic.

where did you buy your disc from? im having a hard time with the fact that two discs are going to cost twice as much as the actual costume. but if i have to shell the money out i will

It really adds that nice little detail to your costume. As far as how to... I planned to use a stencil and spray paint it on myself. How about a security pen and UV LED? You'd have to find a good place to hide the UV LED so it pointed at the design on your face, but it would look very ISO, and is a very simple setup.

Oh, I had long time brought a couple when they was on the shelves and the movie was just still out in theaters(but knew they was gonna go fast). I ended up getting 3 Rinzler's and 3 Kevin Flynn's too(what LUCK). Yes, if you really need one of them, Ebay is the only place plus SHELL OUT BIG $$$$(unfortunately) for they're collector's items. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks and YES, it is SO BRIGHT and VIVID(as long a STRONG source of batteries are in it). I just hope it doesn't OVER BRIGHT the suit I'm working on though(but doubt it will). :lol

How about a security pen and UV LED? You'd have to find a good place to hide the UV LED so it pointed at the design on your face, but it would look very ISO, and is a very simple setup.

That's a much easier idea, and it would look really good.

@CostumerNew2010: I know what you mean. That's how my chest lights are. As long as I have strong, fully powered batteries, I'm nice and bright.

And nah, I doubt it will. If it does, just hold it a bit farther away when posing for photos. lol

Updates from me:
Got some new shots up on my website. This was the last shoot for version one of Rinzler. He's retired now. After I make Zero from Borderlands 2 I'm going to start planning out version two of Rinzler! So excited!
