Tron Legacy Costume

Sorry, stupid question, I've never worked with EL tape. So can you connect that wiring to a standard battery pack (say 4 AAA or 9V) or do you need some kinda special power driver transformer or some such?

Thanks!

You will need an inverter to convert the DC from the batteries into AC. I've heard some people talk about issues related to poor quality inverters, so don't just go for the cheapest one.

Also, depending on how much EL tape is connected, you may want to consider a using a larger power source. I'm using 8 AAs for mine, for example.

Doing a white flashback flynn inspired jacket for my wife (to match my black one)... found a relatively cheap interesting pleather jacket on ebay and E6000'ed some side emitting 12V LED strips into the jacket overhanging flaps. Then I got some 1/8" thick white silicone sheet from amazon and cut it to fit. A bit more E6000 and voila:

Awesome jacket. I bet it was screaming "light me up!" when you saw it.
I've been wanting to do a white suit similar to the kingpin concept drawing.

Ahh...Ok thanks!

Wow!!!

Been a while since I have been on here. Had to put my Rinzler costume on hold while I worked on other things for Fanime, Wasteland Weekend, and Halloween. But since October is just about over I can get back to Tron!

Already have all the black stretchy material for the body suit. Going to start what I call "poor man" silk screening soon, for the hexagonal print. Just going to lay out all the fabric (enough for two costumes, my Rinzler and my wife's Black Guard) and paint it all on using a thin, mesh like material and mod podge to fill in the unwanted areas, which I suspect is going to take a little while.

Have three identity discs. (that I was lucky enough to pick up for $15 a pop a few months back) I know how I am going to mod them, just need to order the parts when I can, as well as pick up a dremel and soldering iron. There is a Harbor Freight just down the block from me so I can check there. Unfortunately this is the first time we have done ANYTHING like this, so it's going to be a challenge. One that I have willingly accepted of course. Tron is worth it.

Also have been working on shaving the foam to form the helmets. This is my Rinzler helmet thus far below. I am really happy with how it's come thus far. Still need to shape it out some more, and add some foam on the opposite side because I shaved too much off. BUT you can kind of tell what it's supposed to be now, so I am excited. Both nervous and excited for the finished product.

Wow, with all the super quality work on here I feel like a schlub. But here is my final for the Rinzler costume I built for this halloween. It came out pretty good. The helmet is by far the most difficult thing to make:

I'm assuming you're using some kind of el wire to make the glowing lines? I'm new to this el wire thing, where do you get the electricity from? Batteries hidden under the suit...? And what kind of batteries is it?

WOW! That came out really well, the chest piece is awesome. Don't sell yourself short, you have some tallent right there :thumbsup

Thanks very much Canobi! It's appreciated. While at the party I pet three people who actually worked on the costumes and they all said they liked what I had done. I guess I can't ask for more than that. Can I?

Has anyone successfully rewired Adafruits el tape? everything ive found online hasnt really helped. I think their design is different than the other brands ive seen tutorials for.

THIS!

I have both EL tape from Adafruit and Ellumiglow and just recently (after two weeks of attempts and 2-3' of trashed tape) figured out how to get the Adafruit tape to somewhat work.

I was using the instructables.com tutorial and it says to remove the "semi-non-conductive" layer to reveal the conductive layer underneath. I kept doing that and failing every time, it would just short the connection and turn the inverter off. I also tried using the staple method in this thread (like page 175ish) and no go. Finally gave up and super-simplified the costume in question to where my (5) 42" strips we could only cut once as to just utilize the pre-made connections and then run wires everywhere into the inverters. I even looked for the ETCO connectors and while my google-fu is strong, I couldnt find anyone who had them that wouldnt require ordering 20,000 units from China, though no guarantees that this would even work for offset 90/10 EL tape as you would have to be pretty on-point with getting the teeth to get that tiny strip off to the side....

Earlier tonight while messing around I tried NOT scraping or removing the "semi-non-conductive" layer.

SUCCESS.

I put the copper tape (per the tutorial) right over the top layer and then another piece onto the super thin layer on the side and folded the excess tape around the edge.

Now the issue. When I connect it with my testers, it lights up great. When I go to solder onto them to make a permanent connection, it shorts. I believe the heat of the soldering is just hot enough to melt through and short out the underneath layer. This EL tape stuff is super sensitive. I even tried the drop-solder method (as seen in the second pic) no dice.

I might try on the Ellumiglow tomorrow to see if their green layer acts the same as the Adafruit stuff.

Does anyone know where to buy EL Tape thats split 50/50 down the full length of the tape? I think thats the key to making this whole thing work reliably. My CLU caped costume has since been downgraded to finding a bomber jacket and black jeans and doing a "Pre-Coup Retro Clu", and my sisters Quorra went from pretty extravagent with angles and whatnot to pretty amateur, though still looks pretty awesome. Oh well, I guess theres always next year.

First time poster but been lurking this thread for months now. Didnt get all my parts in until 2-3wks ago so its been very disappointing to say the least once I found out how insanely difficult this EL tape is to work with.

Hey guys! Long time no see. Sadly, there are no new Tron updates from me. Rinzler got damaged quite a bit from the convention I attended back in April, so I'm currently making repairs for a final photo shoot for version one of the costume. I plan to make a version two in the future. Really looking forward to it!

Haven't done the final shoot yet, but I do have a couple of new photos for anyone interested:
Tron Legacy: Rinzler by Petite-Pan on deviantART

Altesse: I've been following this for a while, I'm working on a Rinzler as well. (I'll post some pictures soon). What did you use to light the gloves?

At first I used EL wire, but that proved too painful. With constant movement and bending the wires wore out and my knuckles got sore. I would recommend using reflective tape for your hands.

OMG OMG OMG DUDE... I am fangirling over your costume! It looks amazing!

Hey all, looks like this thread's still getting some action, so I wanted to share my CLU build. Finished the helmet (finally) the rest is still in the works, but here are a couple pics of the helm. Let me know what you think-the good/bad/et al.

Thanks soulinertia!
it was my first attempt at something to this scale, so I went with the tried-and-tested 'volpin' method. --body filler, molded and casted with smooth-on products, then ended up making a small vac-from box for the visor, which spreads across the 3 front facing panes. I have some el wire in the stripe, covered with some epoxy. And used some epoxy to blend the visor to the helmet.

I'm happy with the outcome :thumbsup, but will def. experiment with other methods. body filler takes some time to dry before making adjustments, So i may experiment with clay next time around.
