Tron Legacy Costume

Well, after 6 months of research and several tries, I am ready to show up.
Not the best pics ever, but nice anyway.

Everything is in this thread. Everything. Thanks everyone.

Amazing job, would love to see a step by step of you costumes!

Alita thanks for the help on the duct tape bodysuit!

I'm running into a dilemma and you guys are the only ones I could turn to on this.

We are going as blue programs it might end up we cannot do an el tape/wire combo unless it is ordered white from the beginning. I am running the risk of getting two different shades since it is two different types and may not come from the same manufacturer and/or website.

El wire I notice you need to double up your requirement so you don't get the hot spot showing up when diffusing, but with el tape, I am not sure if I can make the corners and
shapes I will need.

My boyfriend wants a goal of as little power supplies as possible.

Tron costume experts, lend me your guidance.

Tyrant, I just asked luminousfilm.com about 1inch wide split electrode tape)as they call it) and they charge $7.75 a foot (if its white or blue), thats plus an inverter and a connector, $2.

I will be ordering my new El Panel wiring from this company myself. Patrick has been very helpful with instructing me what I will need to illuminate my Quorra costume.

For 4 feet of El Panel, all the wiring, the connectors and the inverter it will cost around $130. That is providing I am doing all the soldering work myself. Not that bad. I was expecting $200-$300 bucks which I was still prepared to pay.

I will be replacing my current diffused Quorra lighting with LuminousFilm.com El Panel lighting. I can't wait! After seeing Sheol's post of his Sam and Quorra costumes, I definitely can't wait to replace my wire. I hope it looks as brilliant bright as theirs does. ;)

And The Siren costume was a matte grey zentai suit bought off ebay. This was then cut up and white glitter lycra was sewn for the white pieces. This is a white lycra with a fine metallic finish for high shine look. Probably the most difficult bit of sewing this way is that you will need a full body duct tape dummy in order to pattern the pieces correctly to fit your body exactly. However the metallic finish made it easier for hot glue to adhere straight onto the fabric with velcro. This method withstood several 'pull' tests and so long as your lycra has something to 'melt' into the glue it should have the same success rate. She's using reflective tape in the pictures but will update her costume later with EL wire. The contacts she's wearing are Lestat Blue.

Thanks Annisse and Eddiedyr and everyone on this whooping 114+ thread for helping us through the arduous process of making these costumes.

Hi Alita! I actually found your friend who did the Siren costume on Twitter when I was doing a Tron cosplay search and was amazed. Such a great job she did. Inspired me to continue to do my research on creating my Siren suit.

Then I found your Quorra photos on another Twitter search yesterday. Awesome job! and happy your El Wire lighting job worked out for you! :) Did you use High Bright El Wire or just regular standard for your El Wire? I used Standard 2.6mm white 1st on mine on just the arms and leg and then had to take them out and replace them to match my chest and boot lighting with High Bright, made such a difference.

Congratulations to both of you on a job well done! :D

WOW!!! :thumbsup Yes, you two are the best Sam and Quorra I have seen so far Is that El Tape/Film you used for your light work? The brightness factor looks so solid and even. Excellent job there guys! Do you have any photos with the flash on so we can see the costume design better? Please post if you do :)

I had the honour of seeing these up close in person (as judge I got to see all the finishing) and wow, seriously brilliant work :)

Their win was so very highly deserved too. When their form got in I was squeeing like a squeey thing.

Ah, I wondered about that! I was musing on getting a zentai suit off ebay, but I've never dealt with one before. I have a couple more questions for you...

1.) Bit of an odd question, but how mobile can one be in a zentai suit? Is it possible to dance in it? I'm hoping to do an LED hoop routine (lit to mimic a Tron disc) in the siren costume. But to do that, I'd need the mobility.

It depends on the fabric used. Most zentai suits on ebay are made from a nylon lycra in a dance weight/stretch anyway. And usually the glossy ones are just foil covered same with the same stretch and body. Stretch PVC is a lot less stretchy but is still easy to move about in as it all warms up with body heat and eventually forms a bit to your body. My Mara Jade suit has definite butt curve after a few wearings!

I did manage to hoop in my PVC catsuit! It was a bit embarassing but I waited until the neighbours were away... My hoop is urethane tubing with a flocked ribbon glued around it and it slips a little. The flocking is good against skin but not slick fabric ;) But a Hoopnotica travel hoop or hoop with electric tape will grip better so should be fine.

Right-o! Thanks MDB! I think I'll be going with a single white light LED hoop with black gaffer tape for that very reason. (It also works great with the monochromatic tone of the siren costume. I doubt I'll put a disc hub on my back, so I'll just let to LED hoop be my disc. :p )

I was considering giving up my Tron costuming as I feared it would just be too expensive and hard to make on my starving artist budget. But after seeing that last Siren cosplay, I have renewed hope!

Sheol - Your pictures look absolutely amazing! The lighting appears spot on. Good work man!

A bit of info gathered together on the cost of basic 1in wide ELTape from LuminousFilm.com:

"Hello,

Our 1" wide split electrode material runs $7.75 a foot and comes in pink-off/white-on or green-off/blue green-on. You can also purchase it in 100' or 300' rolls for $615.00 and $1,650.00 accordingly.

The ETCO clips, without wire, are $0.35 each
If you are not ordering any EL lamp, the minimum order is 24 pieces, plus shipping.

Let me know if you have any other questions and I will do my best to answer them for you.

I assume my inverter used for ELWire (12v 300mah) will do the job of running 3 or so feet of this Split Electrode Tape. If not, it's a $35.00 experiment. :) The inverters LF sells are rather expensive, which makes me wonder a bit as the much lower cost inverters I have been using from ELWirePros and other companies have done the job just fine on both ELWire and ELTape combos of up for 30feet in total length.

This is a considerable difference in price over other locations, such as GLowHut.com where 1 foot of 1 inch wide ELTape costs $15.00 and comes in five colors (I have only seen the SilverOff/Blue-GreenOn first hand).

a question with Inverters ... im using a 12v inverters .. is there any way to modified it so it would brighter ? how about higher voltage battery pack ? now im using a 9v and two of 1.5 batt .. so total of 12v .. will it still work with higher voltage ? effects ?

As I have seen around here, most people are just adding a second inverter if the color starts to show some lessening due to longer lengths of ELWire/Tape.

Does anyone happen to have a pic of the 'box' looking thing CLU has on his right hip, opposite the lightcycle baton? it looks almost like a small, flat box. It'd be a good place for me to hide an inverter.

As I have seen around here, most people are just adding a second inverter if the color starts to show some lessening due to longer lengths of ELWire/Tape.

The reason they are doing that is to reduce the current draw on a single inverter. For example, the 12V inverters convert up the direct current voltage to a 120V alternating current that runs at a specific frequency, lets say 2kHz for a dimmer one, 8kHz for brighter. The driver current draw is dependent on the length of the ELWire/Tape, and the longer it is, the more that frequency distributes, thus leading to a dimmer light.

Using multiple inverters on separate ELWire/Tape sections will make the total brightness more consistent, but your overall brightness is dependent on the frequency of your inverters.

Tl/dr: Use multiple inverters in parallel on parallel ELWire/Tape strips to achieve maximum brightness. Using them in series is not really possible considering the connections between inverters and wires. DC in, AC out. You can't take the AC output of one and hook it up to the DC input of another, unless you want to see some magic smoke :)

Interesting, so you can bank up inverters on a single rail?

Theoretically yes. But the gotcha is you have to be able to support the total current draw of your circuit. So basically each inverter is going to require xx hundred milliamps of DC to run, usually measured in milliamp-hours (mAh, number of milliamps in one hour).

Lets say you have 3 inverters that require 300 mAh to operate, each. Your total current requirement on that 12V line would be 300x3 = 900 mAh. If you used 8 high energy lithium batteries, like the L91's from Energizer, those support a total current output of 2000mAh. So if you used 8 of those, hooked up your 3 inverters, you will have good brightness for 2000/900 = 2.2 hours.

The secret: plan your circuit. Figure out how many inverters you need, figure out how much current they need to operate, add that all up, thats your current requirement on DC. Then find a battery source that can supply that current. The highest current ratings of AA batteries I'm finding is 3000mAh. Most batteries you buy, like standard AAs at Walmart, only support 1000mAh. Some UPS power supply 12V sealed lead acid batteries get you 7200mAh (but it weighs 8 pounds). The catch all: make sure you don't over drive your batteries, or the wires you use to connect them and the batteries themselves will get hot, and tend to burst open spilling acid everywhere.
