Tron Legacy Costume

A bit of info gathered together on the cost of basic 1in wide ELTape from LuminousFilm.com:

"Hello,

Our 1" wide split electrode material runs $7.75 a foot and comes in pink-off/white-on or green-off/blue green-on. You can also purchase it in 100' or 300' rolls for $615.00 and $1,650.00 accordingly.

The ETCO clips, without wire, are $0.35 each
If you are not ordering any EL lamp, the minimum order is 24 pieces, plus shipping.

Let me know if you have any other questions and I will do my best to answer them for you.

I assume my inverter used for ELWire (12v 300mah) will do the job of running 3 or so feet of this Split Electrode Tape. If not, it's a $35.00 experiment. :) The inverters LF sells are rather expensive, which makes me wonder a bit as the much lower cost inverters I have been using from ELWirePros and other companies have done the job just fine on both ELWire and ELTape combos of up for 30feet in total length.

This is a considerable difference in price over other locations, such as GLowHut.com where 1 foot of 1 inch wide ELTape costs $15.00 and comes in five colors (I have only seen the SilverOff/Blue-GreenOn first hand).

That's very helpful information. I'll be buying some white EL strips from LuminousFilm for my "Young Flynn" jacket. I'm just not sure if I should go for 1" wide or 0.5" wide. I haven't seen the film in a while, but the single stripe alongside the zipper of the jacket seemed somewhere between the two sizes, but I don't have a good visual reference to calibrate myself. Are most folks here using 1" wide for their costumes? Maybe that's the "default" width on the Grid.

Somewhere between 1in and .5in would also give you the option of using GlowHut.com tape as it's right around .75in wide and is only $12.00 for about 4ft length. Gives you lots of extra tape to go crazy with.

I had mostly ruled out Glowhut due to the color inconsistency of their product. The LuminousFilm material appears to have higher quality control.

I looked at the picture of the director wearing the Young Flynn jacket, and the strip does look to be around 0.75" wide, although it's hard to say because we're viewing it at an angle. I think 0.5" might be the best option, though, as I'll need to squeeze the tape alongside the zipper of whatever jacket I use. :confused

The color issue, having experienced it myself first-hand, is a pain. The strips they sell will be 'the color' you order, it really is more of an issue of ordering at two different times and getting two variations of 'that color'. Hit and miss, but controlled on single orders (multpiles of items in one order should be safe).

I have looked the pics over and it's a sure bet to be between .5in-.75in on the 'real jacket', but around .75in-1in width in the comic/concept images. Personally, I would go 1in on the jacket, .5in on the boots and other areas, as that is what it looks like to me in Betrayal..

If you are only using white, then I think theres no inconsistancy due to no color filters on it

Right-o! Thanks MDB! I think I'll be going with a single white light LED hoop with black gaffer tape for that very reason. (It also works great with the monochromatic tone of the siren costume. I doubt I'll put a disc hub on my back, so I'll just let to LED hoop be my disc. :p )

I was considering giving up my Tron costuming as I feared it would just be too expensive and hard to make on my starving artist budget. But after seeing that last Siren cosplay, I have renewed hope!

Sheol - Your pictures look absolutely amazing! The lighting appears spot on. Good work man!

Nice! I keep eyeing up some led strip tape here and thinking cunning hoop plans but it doesn't get further ;)

Also sorry for taking so long to reply about the suit test! I wound up redoing nearly everything for my Shaak Ti costume to wear the last two weekends. The airbrush is my friend. The airbrushg is my friend.. though maybe not gravity feed given my tendency to wave my arms about...

Sheol those suits are absolutely amazing! Lights up perfectly, though I'd like to see some shots of the suit itself without the lighting as well!

I am personally going to be using EVA foam sheets, I know a number of other people are using the same stuff too. I would show pics... but I am buying it tomorrow. Once I make some progress I will post.

I started looking for foam online to make the armor. I read in Don Robert's thread about L200 foam and found this:
Minicel Foam, Closed Cell Foam Padding, Foam Rubber Sheets

Is this suitable to use? And if anyone has any good links to some foam they have used it would be much appreciated.

If you aren't in a hurry, I will be ordering from that site within the next week. I live only a few states away so I don't think it would take long to get here. Don Robert really opened up my eyes when I saw his Tron builds. My boyfriend and I aren't average shapes since he is lean and really tall and I'm petite and short.

I scrapped using wonderflex since it's $60ish bucks for the roll I want. Plus it doesn't even cover include me adding in buying EVAs foam.

NoSon. That's it buddy. I got it from another site that sent me samples of the L200, L300 and another foam called Volara. L200 is good because it takes paint and adhesive well. It is also heat sealable.

As for paint, I am about to thin down some Rosco paint and apply it to L200 with it primed with Rosco FlexCoat. I will post update pics in a couple of days comparing this with plastidip.

What I'm planning on doing is taking 1/2" thick L200 and heat cutting and grinding it down to a minimum of a 1/8" or 1/4" in the thinnest part. This will allow for the proper contouring for my Rinzler outfit. The thickest part can house the wiring without producing buckling of the foam.

I highly recommend getting black so that the thinned paint will not "seem" as thin since it will be black on black.

That stuff does look like it'd be much better to work with and more durable than craft foam. Interestingly enough, I'm only about a 15 minute drive from that store's brick and mortar location. I've driven by it a million times, but never really paid much attention to it. I may have to stop by there after work tomorrow.

Hi Alita! I actually found your friend who did the Siren costume on Twitter when I was doing a Tron cosplay search and was amazed. Such a great job she did. Inspired me to continue to do my research on creating my Siren suit.

Then I found your Quorra photos on another Twitter search yesterday. Awesome job! and happy your El Wire lighting job worked out for you! :) Did you use High Bright El Wire or just regular standard for your El Wire? I used Standard 2.6mm white 1st on mine on just the arms and leg and then had to take them out and replace them to match my chest and boot lighting with High Bright, made such a difference.

Congratulations to both of you on a job well done! :D

Thanks Annisse your trial and error process definitely helped me make my choices. I used High Bright all the way through. Was definitely brighter. Though hilariously I still shorted out on the way and had to get my friend to literally rip out a bit of wire and resolder it at the con.

Unfortunately I don't think this wire shows up too well on white on the Siren suit in daylight, there was almost no difference between the 'white' of the lycra and the white of the EL making it useful for nighttime use only. EL tape would probably be a better way to go, or LEDs.

And Thanks MDB for giving us an excuse to make and wear our tron costumes :)

A question for anyone who's used Glowhut's EL panels: Can you cut them shorter? I could hide the panel under the suit well enough but it'd be nice to not have to.

And would transparencies work for the overlay frosting technique on some of the wider portions? It bends well enough, I don't think it wrinkles easily.

I haven't cut any panels but I'm sure it's the same story with the tape which I did cut. Just make sure you seal the edge off with tape (I used electrical) so no moisture gets into it.

Just a word of support and sorrow for anyone with friends or family in Japan right now. I know we have some people on this forum from the East and I can only hope our words bring some solace and reassurance.

I'm sure I speak for all us when I say that kind words like that are much appreciated. If you can, please Google some donation methods and give a few bucks. We could definitely use the help right now. Luckily, my family was a few hours north and is all ok. Some friends of mine in Sendai may not have been so lucky. We still don't know.

Like I said, if we can just give a little bit we can make a huge difference. I'll be redirecting some of my costuming funds, and I hope others can spare a little to do the same. Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers!

MD, good and grim news as one. We hope all works out. My family has already sent a few hundred $$ to the Red Cross just minutes after we saw the BBC coverage. Every penny counts, just wish we could do more.

Best site to donate is American Red Cross - DO NOT DONATE TO ANY OTHER SITE BUT THAT ONE!!!! There's been too many reports of SCAMMERS taking advantage of people(easily-pity ones at that)on this/any disaster and not enough people reserch what sites are LEGIT!
