Tron Legacy Costume

Hey everyone. Question for those that have used the inverters from luminous film: They mention that a VAC to VDC power supply isn't included. Is this a fancy pants way of saying, "battery" or is this some other component I need to get?

Yep. wall warts are always AC, and batteries are DC :thumbsup

That's what I thought. I didn't think it was all that different from my el wire inverters but I wanted to double check. It would have been much easier to say, "batteries not included." :lol

Ok then, second question: Would I be able to hook this up to a LiIon battery without lighting myself on fire? Specs on the driver: Input Voltage 12VDC @ 1.8AMP, Output Voltage ~280VAC @ 650Hz

Is that the driver that comes with the EL?

Yeh, should be fine with that :thumbsup

Just make sure any/all contacts are properly isolated/sealed as a jolt from a 12v inverter bites like monster (A/C travels on the outside of conductors unlike D/C that moves through the core).
Haha yeah. I found that one out the hard way when I tried to fix a short while wearing my costume. I had electrical tape around the connection, but I apparently didn't use enough.

Hi guys

If it wasn't for this awesome thread, I'd never have made my costume, or even got into my replica hobby, so thanks for starting it rook3 :thumbsup

And to everyone else back then that answered my dumb noob questions with cincerity, I thank you too :)

Its been a few years, tron is my obsession, I love electronics, and making things is my passion, so I thought I'd put together a mini series of tutorials on all things EL related as I find them for everyone in return.

The tutorials will be focused on (where applicable, budget) techniques and tricks that can be used to incorperate EL into a costume :thumbsup

First up is EL tape (not split electrode, I'll do one on that type later):

Thanks for giving me such a cool hobby :D

Hey everyone. It takes a long time to get through all this great info that you have all shared over the past several years. Lots of great work out there.
Here's a few images of my first attempt at using EL. I wanted to keep it simple to make sure I didn't screw it up. Nonetheless, I'm really happy with how the jacket turned out. I used one of those 9v plug and play inverters hidden in the mesh liner and velcro all the way down the tape, keeping it well secure and still functional for riding.
Can't wait to start on my next project or expand on this one.
Hope you all like it.

Oh my, two years without visiting this thread and it still goes on and on!!
Amazing. You guys and gals make an amazing work here.

My contributuion, always the same. Instead of eva, use neoprene. Shapes better to the body and is very stretchy and rubber-like.

Keep it up!

Have loved Tron Legacy since it came out and hope to someday do Flynns robes for my husband or has anyone bought the replica ones from ebay? How do they hold up?

Anyway, I'm in a bellydance troupe and we are planning a Tron inspired costume, using 'information disks' as a prop and using some of Daft Punks music from the film. Unfortunately, we have to go low budget so no light up sections, so I'm looking into UV reactive paint or sew on tape as our accent 'light up' details. Anyone do this for their costumes?

Yes, there are a few tron costumes made out of reflective tape and all came out fine, it's just less flashy and depends on the surrounding light to shine properly.

A little help over here~ Tron Legacy Identity Disk - Tron Legacy Costumes I see that these costume discs are on sale, of course they don't shine or anything, but i'd like to know if they're hollow like the Frisbee ones or look the same on both sides. If they're hollow I might try and attach it to the back of my next costume, with a little modding to add some lights to it and save all the ridiculous money that deluxe discs are going for. Did anyone laid hands on one of these?

Ramocs,

I understand the worry about keeping the EL strip secure while riding, but I suggest for your further iterations that you put an EL strip out the outside of the jacket on the other flap. That way while you are riding in the evening/night you light up main street.

I use the first zipper, so it does stay on the outside when the jacket is all zipped up. :)

Yeh, I have :thumbsup

I bought two originally for the costumes I made for myself and my wife. They are much bigger, and deeper than the delux versions as they need to be aerodynamic. They are also one sided, but if the blade is cut off from a second disc, the shell can be glued to the whole one to make a semi respectable representation.

Here's my wife's costume sporting the frisbee type disc. It's sitting too high up on her shoulder area, but this was taken during the fitting stage, and I didn't have the camera, so excuse the poor picture quality:

Thanks! <3 I've been thinking that if the disc is perma-attached to the back the blade part is unnecessary (only shows when the disc is out to kick some digital ass!), so that would give my tiny back some space too. And also being a secondary character, Mara doesn't get in a killing de-resolution spree like some other characters in the series :rolleyes

I swear that some time this year I'll stop the thinking part of the costume and start building. I'm also receiving my second wig (first one didn't look right) in the mail this week, so I might make a few test shots for fun.

Don't want to derail this, but I'm trying to put LEDs in my clu helm, and tear out the current el wire.

Does anybody know good books/tutorials for a beginner just getting into wiring, LEDs, circuitboards, etc...?

I'd start with the tutorials on adafruit.com and sparkfun.com. As well as Studying Electronics. This thread also has some good tips and tricks in it. Are you looking to use individual LEDs or LED strips? Individual LEDs will make it easier to make a fancier designs but will require more soldering and parts.
