Tron Legacy Costume

im going to plan a redux version of my costume no coat staying redish orange. i have the rinzler disc already originally what i wanted to do was going to cost about $700 the reduced costume is around 210. So question what kind of wires would i need if using an led strip and what kind of inverters so i can figure out the actual cost of this costume. I am the type to financially plan ahead because theres nothing like being at a con and not having any money to spend. it sucks been there done that. Any help on the wiring would be greatly appreciated.

Hi rinzle

Most led strips operate at 12v, so an x8 AA or AAA battery pack will be required if using standered batteries.

And there's good news, you won't need inverters, as those are for EL :thumbsup LEDs will take direct current (though it will kill em damn quick), so resistors are introduced to "stem the flow" as it were. The strips have a resistor built in, which is why you can just wire it up and switch it on.

I've bought a few different types of strip for disc mods. The wires that came with strips pre attached look to be around the 30-40swg mark, which is quite thin, so hiding them in seems and clothing should be easy enough.

Hope that helps

Canobi, I love that pic! What's the story behind it? I don't think I've ever seen it before!

I googled Tron concept pics and I ended up at the Tron Lives Facebook page some time back, I subscribed to support it and someone posted it up last night :D Just had to share it with you guys :thumbsup

The layout of your strips is going to be really important. Nine-volt batteries are best if you plan on several disconnected lighting sections.
Assuming you already have soldering tools, the bare minimum you need are a couple 9V batteries ($1-$2 ea. for cheapies), a 5m roll of 3528 60 LEDs/m LED strip (~$12 dollars if you get it from China, ~$20 via Amazon), 9v Snaps (~$2 per 5-pack, get like 4 packs).
Optional: A 12v 3Amp dimmer ($5-$10) - it will give you an on/off switch if you use normal batteries and allow you to control the brightness of the lights.
Optional: Skip the 9v or 8xAA battery and buy a 12V 6800mAh li-ion battery off eBay/China for ~$25. It'll power the full roll of lights (it's unlikely you'll use the whole roll) for 3hrs. In comparison, 8xAA are at most 3000mAh and a 9v is 565mAh. It also comes with it's own on/off switch and if you want to control brightness use the dimmer.

Go to page 190 of this thread and read post 4728 by AOIfrost. He includes a link to his blog and a youtube video he made of how he put together his strips. I linked 2 instructables that used a similar method in my WIP thread ("Child's Quorra (Tron) Costume" and "LED Pants").

I also made some pictures just for you. :)

Hey Russ,

Did you ever think that your simple little request would blow up and turn into this monster thread with over a million views? I think it's pretty cool and I hope Disney takes notice and goes ahead and green-lights TRON 3.

From what I read in a recent interview with Joe Kosinski, they will not be reusing the TRON: Legacy assets and will be creating everything from scratch again. So it sounds like once things get rolling, we'll have even more costume choices to pick from!

TRON LIVES!! :D

Lol, no, I never imagined the thread would grow like it has. :)

Sad fact is I don't even have a suit done myself yet. :)

I have a disc "finished" but I still want to build a full suit.
One day!

Thanks! not planning on a whole lot of junctions so the wire circuit shouldnt be too difficult im still planning on the same design i put on the coat but instead its going to go on the bodysuit instead.

I'm assuming you're talking about your sketch in post 5313. Even as a bodysuit, doing the bit at the waist and the section on the arms is going to be tricky. I see 6 sections: L+R arm, L+R lower torso and legs, L+R upper torso and back. Seven or eight if you throw in the waist and neck part. Is the circle part of the design or just to represent you're identity disc?
You might be able to do it as one (dis)continuous line but I can't think of how right now. It will be easier to split it into at least a left and right half. You're going to need to make or buy some form of splitter or use separate power packs in that case. Decide on what to use as power source and where you're going to put it. That is further going to alter your design. It will also determine if it's easier to make a buy the splitter.
In general you'll want short wires or connectors wherever you want angles but no noticeable gap in the lights. The 9v/PP3 snaps are pretty easy to hide. Use longer* wires where you want it to look like the lights stop and then start again elsewhere.

waist (longer wires here to make the break in lights obvious)

* The longer the length of wire you use the thicker it will need to be to safely handle your current. Someone posted a link to wire gauge chart in this thread already.

On a side note, a photo of me on one of the times I took the lights out for a spin. The wires I used were not easy to hide.

Does anyone know what happened to the energy sword used in the film? Was it sold or trashed?

YES.

Im running a prop making class in the U.K (a small art shop just outside LONDON)

two people in the class are activly making TRON costumes, i will ask them if they will allow photos to be shown on here , i dont see that it would be a problem.

Ooo, yes please, if you can! 8D

I need to work on Rinzler #2 for the movie premier. I think I may go with reflective tape this go around just to make things easier on me. That way I can pose, run, sit, etc. I'll have to do some careful planning before I use LEDs again. It worked, and looked good, but it wore out so quickly. Right now my concentration is on another project.

Hey everyone. Question for those that have used the inverters from luminous film: They mention that a VAC to VDC power supply isn't included. Is this a fancy pants way of saying, "battery" or is this some other component I need to get?
