TIE Bomber Construction - Take 2

Hey, i'm still collecting the kits. I started on extending the wings and its a LOT of work to get right
icon_frown.gif
Anyways, I'm not sure about the piece in question, but someone will chime in.

I've been attempting to build my own Tie Bomber for a while. I've gathered just about all the kits that I need. Having the same problems that you are in identifying certain parts.
The part under the Rodney kit on the front bottom of the middle section and the part you have indicated in the picture above. If not found, I'll just scratchbuild these parts as close as possible. But I am having trouble finding the part that goes on the sides of each tube body. Read the post on page 2 which indicated that the part in question is from a 1/24 Airfix Harrier jet. I have the new Airfix Harrier but cannot find anything that looks close to it. Does it come from another manufactuer or from an older Airfix kit? Also another question. You have some very good pics of the studio scale model. Where did you get these? I've been trying to get a good pic of the rear of the middle section and certain areas of the wing.

thanks,

Hobbit 7,
The Harrier part is the back of the ejection
seat. It needs to be modified a bit and some
strips need to be added as well.

Emojo5,
Which 1/700 ship kit were you referring to?
Also, which Tamiya car kits are you looking
at? Btw, great pic of that particular part!
Best I've seen yet.

As far as my kit is progressing, I just finished
the back of the tubes and the sensor under the
torpedo tube. Curently working on the engine box
and the wings. Will post pics when I get a camera.

Hi Zac.

I thought that piece looked like the front wheels of a Tamiya car kit, but now I'm not so sure. Someone else thought it might be from one of the Tamiya 1/700 scale ship kits. He thought that I should look in that direction. He didn't have any thought on which ship in particular to look at. Do you have any ideas?

emojo5,
I am also not sure what kit that part came from. There are about four pieces on the studio model that I am not sure of. Pieces that have already been discussed on this topic.
One area that concerns me is the MPC Darth Vader kit wings. Have you ever taken a real close look at them. Especially the outer portion of the solar panels. VERY POOR! I know the studio model was built with the same wings but they look terrible. I'm thinking about scratchbuilding a pair of more CLEANER wings.

Well I don't have all the Tamiya ship kits but I do have some of the 'important' ones and I don't see anything that looks like the part in question. However that does not mean it did not come from a ship kit.

Hi Boba Flint.

Long time, no hear from. Thanks for responding.

Yes, I went out and checked as many of the Tamiya 1/700 ships out at the time myself...without any luck of coarse. As far as it being from a Tamiya 1/20 scale car kit That was just me speculating it's possible source. My thoughts were that it looked like a front axle part (because of all the possible attachment points on the part in question). Anybody out there with any ideas, please chim in.

Does anyone know the particular airfix Harrier kit that is used? I need to know the scale , model number, etc.

I haven't researched its use on the bomber, but if its widespread use on ANH models is any indication, you want the Airfix 1/24 AV-8A Hawker Harrier.

Treadwell is correct. It is the Airix Harrier in 1/24 that is used on the T/B. The part in particular is the rear portion of the ejector seat. You will need two for the bomber but you only get one per Harrier kit. You can cast it up or buy another Harrier kit at what.... $90?

I purchased the 1/24 Airfix Harrier GR3/AV-8A kit number 18003. Infact, I am looking at the part that is suppose to be used as I write this. Part number 55, the kit part that goes to the rear of the pilot's seat, right? If this is the part that is being discussed, then there must be some serious modifying that needs to be done to it. It does not look like the part used on the Tie Bomber. I would say 99% of this part would have to be modifyied. Or does the part come from an older version of this kit from Airfix?

I have the older Harrier kit (it might even be an original version) and from the piece that I have it's a very simple conversion. You would only need a add a strip of styrene to the rear of that part. Now that strip would need to be as thick as the portion of the part in question and you do need to cut off the very end of the Harrier part and round it out a bit. In all it's really not a very big conversion in light as some of the other ones needed on this model.

Do you have a photo of your part? I'll show you mine if you show me yours? I'll even throw in a shot of the part on the TB.

What was the original question Thrawn2222 edited over? (Don't do[/i/] that!!

I believe the original kit was the Harrier GR-1. This was modified slightly to make the GR-3 variant and then reissued.

emojo5,
I would like to show a pic of the part that I have but believe this or not, I never have attempted to put an image on any web sight before. Not sure how to do this on this sight. Went to the "how to" section but no luck. The part in question that I have does come from the new retooled Airfix Harrier. It sort of looks like it but very different. A friend of mine purchased a Tie Bomber from Backlot Studios and I'm trying to see if he will let me comepare the resin part from his kit to the kit piece that I have from Airfix.

I'll chime in here and maybe shed some light on the Harrier part in question.

That part that Backlot Studios has in the kit was completely scratch built as the Airfix Harrier was not reissued at the time the masters were made.

The part from the 1/24 Airfix Harrier is the correct part. This part is the rear of the ejection seat in the kit, you will need two of these for the TIE Bomber.

This part was modified though but only slightly. A strip of styrene was added along with a small styrene square, I think it was also cut a bit so it could butt up to the wing pylons.

Here are some pics that may shed some light on the part. These are from the Uwe Fischer collection.

Looking great there Zac!

The way I scribed the lines on my Bomber was, after measuring, I then layered masking tape one line at a time, scribing each line with a sharp edged needle file. I find that using a file and scribing the lines slowly gives me more control.

Good pictures of the TB parts you have gathered, ZAC. It's amazing how many parts from several kits it takes to make this interesting imperial ship. I've collected just about everything you have gathered except I am still missing a few parts. Some of those parts I see you have found. I was wondering if you could tell where the tan colored part is from seen in images TB11,13,14 and 15? Also the two parts on each side of the top of the targeting sensor in image TB15. Where are they from? Again great images and I hope to show pic of my work here soon. Good job, Zac!
