The Video Game Thread - anything and everything...

I'm just gonna say that Marvel's Midnight Suns is free NOW on the epic Games store, and it is absolutely worth downloading. It'll cycle out tomorrow, though, so grab it quickly. The DLC is worth paying for, too. It's a really enjoyable game with a weird, but ultimately enjoyable combat system. It's not "X-com with Marvel characters."

There's a bunch of exploration, some crafting (optional, though), building relationships with characters, etc., plus the aforementioned combat. It's neat, and for $0, you can't beat the price. And as I said, the DLC is worth it, too. Lots of additional interaction with the 4 DLC characters (Deadpool, Venom, Storm, and Morbius).

I started playing PUBG Battlegrounds a couple days ago, and really enjoy it. Even without a mic it has been fun to work with people in my squad. But man, the entire thing makes me super nervous. I can’t believe how anxious I get when it gets below 20 or so people in a match.

The last online game I was interested in was Battlefield 4 and a lot of times you would get kicked from squads without a mic. I could never use one because my PC was in a room with other people. Luckily I found a cool server and I was pretty good so they would let it slide. I'd probably be crap now because of age and not playing for so long!

Its looking like the story won't change, and that there will be a few modes to pick from, while playing.
Meant to post the trailer, and totally forgot.
Here it is.
I am excited although nervous.

This game was literally ahead of its time on the PS2 imo and still honestly is.
Pressure-sentitive buttons and analog stick flicks allowed you to do different take downs with CQC.
Camo to blend into the area was fun.
Some pretty cool stuff when eating animals or using the "cure" menu like spinning Snake around to throw up.
Just amazing story, music, and characters. This is the definitive secret operative/James Bond video game.

I know PS4/5 did away with pressure sensitive buttons and I wonder how that will play out. MGSV CQC doesnt hit the same tbh.
The game also should be untouched because it is very representative, even by today standards. Strong female who is well-written, LGBT, people of color.

Trigger buttons on the PS5 are still pressure sensitive.
True and iirc, you could hold up the enemy by half-pressing square and shoot by fully pressing so could replace triggers. Grab and interrogating with shoulder button instead of square may feel different but might not be a bad idea. The triggers also have more leeway than the buttons (accidentally killing a person you want to interrogate was not uncommon at the beginning).

Would be cool if they implemented the sensitive triggers into gameplay. The PS5 triggers are really cool but barely any games do anything with them.

Battlefield 4 was my game when I was in college!!! It was my go to, until there weren’t enough people on servers to have a game. It’s on game pass now, and I started playing Battlefield V. There’s plenty of people online to have good games, so it was really nice to get back in it.

I'm hoping they are serious about getting back to BF2-4 gameplay because then I might come back to the next one. My nephew played that last WW2 version and said it was pretty fun, but it's enormous time suck so IDK nowadays.

BFV was...a mixed bag. Some of it was fun but honestly there were a lot of balance issues and irritations.

A big part of the problem was the upgrade system. Upgrades for weapons...you could argue that it's mostly "sidegrades." Like, the individual weapons in each class aren't necessarily better they just give you more options for playstyles (which still gives you an advantage, but at least not a clear, linear, "This is better" advantage).

That wasn't true with vehicles, though. Vehicles all just got straight upgrades. More armor, better guns, additional countermeasures, etc. What that meant was that you had "vehicle hogs" who'd just do nothing but use vehicles forever and eventually they'd simply be able to outplay anyone else who didn't also hog vehicles, because they'd just have a better version of the vehicle. It always gave an edge.

And, of course, as has been a problem since BF1942, air power is always wildly unbalanced, and folks on the ground lack the ability to effectively counter them. Meaning one guy in a plane who is good can shut down an enemy team or at least endlessly harass them.

Some love for (the PC version of) Aliens: Colonial Marines. Contrary to the console versions unfortunately. Modder TemplarGFX really spent years making the game the way it should have been from the beginning. Also interesting that the NSG23 rifle (precursor to the M41A in universe) works the way it should and has been used in the DH and Marvel Aliens comics ever since.

I heard the 1 and 2 remakes are still coming but were delayed to next year.
Yeah, but i think it will be very interesting on what little nuggets they will add to those and i think the scenary will be exquisite as usually, and much needed for those 2 titles in a 2D format. Heck, let them redo 4-9 as well!!

Mars Tactics must be coming closer to completion. New trailer recently came out.

Also the Playstation cult classic Fear Effect has just confirmed to be getting a re-release on Sony, PC and Nintendo platforms. I remember when this came out back in the day I was so blown away by the graphics I actually used to e-mail Westwood Studios to try and convince them to make Blade Runner for the Playstation in this style.

It's funny we were talking about the Mad Max game and now I'm seeing so many videos about it pop up in my feed. Of course, a lot of it has to do with Furiosa being released but I'm also seeing a lot of videos from a year ago.

Over the last few months, was playing through all the Final Fantasy 13 games, including Type-0, which ended up using a lot of the same terms and ideas from 13, but they made it a different world. Just got the Platinum for 13-3 like an hour ago.

I don't know about anyone else, but I've been getting slaughtered by the Steam Summer Sale. Pretty much stocked up on DLC's for games I hadn't picked up yet. All the DLC's for Warhammer Total War III were $100 alone, even after the discount. Double dipped on a few games I already have for Playstation, but they were marked down so much I ended up picking them up again. So tempted to pull the trigger on Triangle Strategy at half price, but I already have it on Switch and the rumor is a PS5 version is coming possibly by the end of the year and I'm not sure I want to triple dip.

EDIT:

Beyond Shadowgate also nearing completion with an update from Dave Marsh.

Hey everyone!

I hope you're having a great summer! I'm going to do the update today as we are getting so close and I wanted to share my thoughts on where we are at!

Game

A few weeks ago as the team was making their final pass at the beta version, I made mine, providing the developers with a decent amount of feedback as well as giving it my stamp of approval. What a lovely, massive game it is! While some of my feedback was various bugs, the majority was confirming that there are sufficient hints hidden throughout the game for each puzzle. I also asked for a few changes to the ending to punch it up a bit! Playing through took me around 7 hours and I'm super impressed with the quality of the game, the side quests into the worlds of Deja Vu, Uninvited and the Mines of Mythrok! Since I made the original Shadowgate, I can honestly say that this is my favorite version since the NES came out in '89!

While we were testing, the team came up with another idea (Feature Creep alert!) and added a final feature - A dev commentary option. This option will be available after completing the game (as to not give anything away!) When turned on, an icon appears on the HUD when that room has an interesting dev story. Clicking on it will reveal some behind the scenes info, funny bugs, cut content and other insights.

Now, all that said, the game now moves to a final testing cycle on Steam! Based on our testing so far, I don't anticipate this will take too long (fingers crossed!)
