The Mandalorian (TV series)

The riding scene's music reminded me of "eye of the tiger". I almost expected for the mando to throw his arms up at the top of some desert stairs.
I thought the music for the Blurgg-run was almost straight out of a Rocky movie. Kind of a weird choice, but it didn't bother me too much.

Yeah, it was weird. Was it really that much of a triumphant moment?

Did anyone catch that line by the blacksmith about "Has your signet been revealed yet?" Would that mean like his symbol? the symbol on his armor like Fett has?
Yeah, it's gotta be something along those lines. Like a clan/family symbol. He said he was a foundling - that's an old fashioned term for 'abandoned child'. Whether he was actually abandoned or was orphaned is bound to be revealed in the fullness of time but I'm guessing he didn't know who his parents were, so part of his quest is discovering his lineage and hence his signet.

I got a totally different vibe. I saw it as more of the whole “we ride!” trope from Westerns. The big swelling music, riding horses across the various locations. The Magnificent Seven remake has a scene like this, Rango has a scene like this, I’m sure countless others.
Yes! I was thinking of that Western trope as well and also of Magnificent Seven in particular.

Another really good example of this is in Robocop when he first goes out on patrol as the main theme is playing. Very Western. Like the town sheriff or a marshal riding out to catch some outlaws.

I see where you are coming from, but this is the problem with the “hurried” pace of the second half of the episode. Kuiil proactively volunteered to help Mando fulfill the bounty, and Mando learned how to ride a blurrg, all within, like, two minutes of screen time.

The triumphant “let’s band together and RIDE” moment didn’t feel earned because it was so rushed.

One of the big benefits of the streaming format is that you aren’t locked into the 40-minute run time of broadcast TV, so episodes can go as long or as short as they need to. You have the freedom to let story beats “breathe“ so they are effective. Seems like they didn’t leverage that freedom as they arguably could have in this episode.

Exactly...the musical score was rough.

Now, some on this thread have said it is only that we expect some grand sweeping orchestra and, therefore, don’t “get” this music as some sort of “western music”.

That’s not it at all.

I enjoy plenty of westerns. I get “western music” as a genre. This is not “western music.

The music is the only thing that is lacking for me.

It is at times dull and uninspired, at other times out of place and counter to what is happening on screen. Overall, the quality is just not there. I hear no themes or leitmotifs at all. The closest equivalent is cheap video game music, to me.

The trailer music was closer to what I would expect than what was actually scored to screen.

100%. This is where slowing down the pace would've helped tremendously.

I totally get that and you're right in that it's not "western music". The similarity I'm seeing to westerns is more in how the music is implemented rather than the actual style of the music.

If I'm one of those that came off sounding like I was saying that people weren't "getting it", I honestly didn't mean it like that. I absolutely can see where the music wouldn't be enjoyable. I watched the episode once when it released and I've already lost the music to memory. I'm just going off my first impressions. I may watch it again and end up agreeing with you guys.

Also, every time I hear or read the word "blurrg":

Change diapers for 50 years, look as good you will not, hmm?

I didn't mind the shortness and quick pace of the pilot as I enjoyed it for what it was and treated it as an 'appetiser'. Having said that, I hope they can pack a little more plot into the remaining episodes if they'll all be that short.
Maybe Disney can be convinced to make every ep in season 2 an hour long if they feel confident about the success of season 1?

[emoji849] Just got done watching episode 2. I'm not sure if this show will get better. It really felt like the old webisodes from the mid 2000's.. just, silly. I really wanted this series to show how bad ass the Mandos are.. so far, not so bad ass.. [emoji852]

I haven’t watched episode 2 yet but I do get that “webisode” feeling from episode 1 which shocks me for a launch series. I don’t feel like I’m really IN the show as I’m watching. It lacks that cinematic feeling that would grab my attention. I feel like I’m watching an incredible fan film on YouTube.

just watched episode 2 and I definitely feel like this could have been a 4-5 episode miniseries with longer run times and slower pacing.
