The Mandalorian (TV series)

It streamed fine for me. Of course, I woke up at 3:30 a.m. CDT for some reason, so maybe the traffic wasn't bad yet.

It didn't blow me away, and I had little nitpicks here and there, but I liked it a lot. I see it as a "strong start."

I have confidence in Favreau, but even more in Dave Filoni, so long as Disney gives them sufficient leash.

I think 40 minutes was way too short, though. It seemed a little rushed.

This just makes you wish Dave Filoni was in charge of Lucasfilm and not George's old coffee girl Kathleen Kennedy.

?

She's a very seasoned producer, and has been one for decades. On some really great films. What does her beginnings as Spielberg's assistant back in 1979 have to do with anything? Pull up her producing credits on IMDB and see if you really want to reduce her to "George's old coffee girl". Is George just “Coppola’s old coffee boy”?

If anyone, I blame Robert Iger for all of the missteps since Disney bought the franchise - ****-canning George's story treatment for Eps VII-IX; making TFA a re-tread of ANH; cranking out movies too fast and giving the franchise self-inflicted brand-fatigue. I'll bet my bottom dollar KK was in favor of none of those things, but was overruled by Iger.

I want Filoni in charge of the creative side of LFL, like Pete Doctor is for Pixar. I'm happy to leave all the "business stuff" to KK, if Iger would just stay out of her way.

Just because Kathleen Kennedy’s name is on some big movies throughout the years doesn’t mean she knows what she’s doing, at least from a story perspective. Producer can mean a lot of things. Maybe she’s good with people, or good at getting money for projects. Maybe she’s a good businesswoman. Maybe she’s good at managing large teams. Where she’s not good—and where that’s been apparent—is as a story/creative person. She’s no Kevin Feige, with everything planned out for good story reasons. I mean, he’s had to deal with the same corporate overlords for far longer, and most of the Marvel stuff has been very well-received. She’s market-test this and screen-test that. And I don’t put too much stock into Filoni, either. Those cartoons he made were pretty bad in my opinion. Just being better than the prequels is like saying the first Michael Bay Transformers is great because it’s better than the other Michael Bay Transformers.

That being said, the first episode was pretty great. The little lizard/fish mounts they had looked a little funny when they were riding them, but other than that, great start.

“I have spoken.”

Just got done watching. GREAT show. I had no streaming issues. Can't wait for episode two. Plus, did I mess something, I heard there was a big reveal about something in the episode the had direct effect to the movies??

Well, the baby "Yoda" species was quite a surprise. Is he/she alive during the events of "Rise of Skywalker"?

I was finally able to get the show open. All morning it kept kicking out with "Error. Please Try Again Later" messages.

Anyway, just finished the first episode, & I think it was a good first episode. The first few shows of a new series -if not the first season- are always a bit ruff. However, I thought this was a good one. Was it perfect? No. I agree with squirk, it seemed a bit rushed, especially at the end. I enjoyed the IG droid.
Here's hoping Disney doesn't Ruin Johnson this one up.

I agree 100% that she is not, and never has been, a creative force in the movie industry.

She’s “logistics.” She makes sure people and things are where they need to be, when they need to be there - all within budget - so the creative people are free to do their thing. And she’s done it successfully for a long time on a lot of big films that we all love. Plenty of non-creative types run successful movie studios, with far lesser pedigrees.

My point was that, for whatever mistakes have been made of late with the SW franchise (and, again, I place that more at Iger’s feet - he has admitted it multiple times), her career in the movie industry is accomplished.

Criticisms of how the franchise has been handled are all perfectly valid, but reducing her to “George’s old coffee girl,” and ignoring all she’s done in the last 35 years, is kind of crappy.

Yes, I agree. I do think the franchise needs a creative guiding force to counteract the business side of things though. Film is a unique medium as it needs a delicate balance between art and business, and unfortunately a lot of Disney’s recent output has been more on the business side. No more costly John Carter mistakes, no more risky ventures. It’s all calculated and tested and proven. I mean, that’s why Star Wars has been a bump for them, because they thought anything with the name would just make money, but their costly reshoots for Solo has made them rethink things. Hopefully it’s enough to allow a creative, whether it’s a director or a producer, to step into the guiding role for Star Wars and make sure there’s still enough soul there. The first episode of Mandalorian was reassuring, though it’s probably too late for TROS.

Anybody up for a new project?

My only real complaint was the music. It felt "odd" for Star Wars. I love the Rebels music as well as TCW.. this, not so much. Otherwise I can't wait to see the next episode.

P.S. love the glimpse of the Mandolin culture. Faloni and Favero are fans of the Mandos so lets hope we see more.

The blue alien felt very out of place for me... The acting was not very good and was ready for his screen time to be over with very early on. Other than that I think it was a pretty solid episode.

The music is different. Nothing that felt thematic or of the feel of the full orchestral impact that I wish was there. IG-11 is awesome!

I liked it…mostly. It felt like a weird western. Sometimes it was a little much though.
