The Mandalorian (TV series)

I guess I just have to say, if you don't like the callbacks, the small universe feel, or the 'cartoon' characters, then I perfectly can see why this episode didn't really float your boat.

I did like it though. I'm guilty of liking REBELS, TCW, & some of the novels, so I'm good with it. At the end of the day, this is a show that all ages should be able to enjoy, & if they put some of the cookies on the bottom shelf so the younger audience can catch the Easter eggs themselves, then I'm not going to let that bother my enjoyment.

I do have ONE MAJOR GRIPE! This episode did something that I can NEVER forgive...

I will never, NEVER be able to watch THE OFFICE again & see an episode with Phyllis's husband without hearing, " I'm Cobb Vanth. Vanth Refrigeration.".

STAR WARS HAS RUINED MY 30'S!!!

;)

Oliphant was Danny Cordray too, remember! The paper business dried up, he had to move to Tatooine!

I adored Rebels and CW too. It opened up a huge vein of SW that was never there for me before, so I might be biased. I also like a little dabble of fan service here and there, as long as it doesn't get too stupid. This was done very well. The whole series is just a blast to watch.

And the armor was never supposed to fit Vanth; that's the whole point...it's not his! He used it for what he needed it for and that was that.

Also...did anyone think he was serving some serious Josh Brolin vibes with this look??

Also...are y'all forgetting this armor was yakked up by a Sarlac??

Is it supposed look legit after that? I'd take leeway here and say that Vanth got it repaired and new lights installed. Or possibly the Jawas repaired it before he bought it. The paint job was just for looks, so he didn't care about that, he just needed it to work.

There's grey area here guys...Like how the hell Boba got out of there without armor. Or he could have sold it to the Jawas for food or other supplies until he got back on his feet after being in a friggin Sarlac...

As for the character at the end, I'm really thinking that's the only time we'll be seeing them. I think it was a "Here they are, in case you had any questions.", & that's it.

Closest thing I can relate it to us the ending of Eddie & The Cruisers. Lol

Just reading this and its another nail in the star wars coffin for me.
Why oh why do they keep bringing back the characters they kill off who turn out to be popular. Leave them dead. Shows a total lack of creativity in bringing new interesting characters to the fore. How fantastic was GoT killed off all the best people somewhere along the line and introduced new blood that turned out to be just as good if not better. This show went down hill the moment they brought in a baby yoda, they've managed to take it lower..

Baby Yoda is a gift. I'm taking it and I will relentlessly enjoy this beautiful puppet.

When ever I see someone hate on the baby:

Besides the fact this wasn't the first time this character has been brought back. Blame the expanded uni first.

Overall, a really nice start to season 2. And since others have posted about "the armor" without spoiler tags, I'll chime in (with basically a SW:SE Fett I've worked on for 2 decades standing in the corner of my bonus room.)

I feel they went above and beyond for the ROTJ Fett armor (anyone here have a hand in that? wink-wink, nudge-nudge, say no more...)
I'm guessing this is NOT original armor, but closely copied from it. The dental expander is there on the gauntlet, the Casio keypad too. 3 tubes on the right gauntlet. Additional weathering and wear OVER the pre-existing weathering patterns.

The helmet looks right to me, thank THE MAKER they didn't do an ESB bucket paint scheme. Can anyone verify the color of the kill strips on the Mandalorian ROTJ bucket though?

Han Solo's damage to the jetpack on the sail skiff (the large, dark gauge), has been "repaired" with silver metal plating, nice touch!
I asked Don Bies here years ago about the ROTJ:SE added Fett scenes, where he wore the damaged jetpack. IIRC, Bies basically said it was a quick thing one day where he ran to the LFL archives and quickly assembled the ROTJ components, then took them over to the set for the added Special Edition scenes. Including the DAMAGED ROTJ jetpack. You can see the continuity error jetpack damage in ROTJ:SE when "Bies" Fett is flirting with the dancing girls in Jabba's palace, turns to walk away from his alcove. and flashes the damage to the jetpack for a few frames. HOWEVER, you can also see the "damaged" Z-6 jetpack just BEFORE Han strikes it and causes the damage:

Is there an in-universe joke now that the Z-6 is prone to misfire when hit by a stick? :)

ALSO, in the above archives Z-6 jetpack photo... I just realized that it is sitting on top of a disassembled IG-88??!!

I know Lucas said that Fett was gone in ROTJ.

But really, I am not at all upset with them bringing back Boba now. Give him a redemption arc of some kind? Give him a fitting true death send-off?

In that case, I guess the issue is more that I prefer the ESB Fett over the ROTJ Fett, if people more qualified than me to identify the armor say it’s based around the ROTJ armor.

(And I did use spoiler tags, I don’t know what everyone else is doing)

I, personally, was hoping for Rex when I saw Temuera's cast credit. But I honestly get it and understand that many love Fett and want to see him return in some way.

With this being about the Mandos, and the Fetts never explaining how they got Mando armor in the canon screen universe, this makes a bit of sense. This show is called the Mandalorian for a reason.

I'm also guessing that was officially Boba walking up to Fennec now. I guess he kept the boots/spurs  ? I'm hoping they do a bit of back story flushing. Possibly seeing the scraped CW show down with Cad Bane?? I'd be excited for that.

Spoilers ahead for the first episode of season two…

Oof. And I was worried about cartoon characters being distracting. REMEMBER R4? REMEMBER ANAKIN’S PODRACER? REMEMBER WEEQUAY? REMEMBER THE EXPANDED UNIVERSE AND THE GUY WHO WORE FETT’S ARMOR?? Good grief, the first half of this episode was mega ass. Didn’t help that Pedro Pascal delivered half his lines with all the charm of Harrison Ford’s Blade Runner narration. Not to mention a lot of the visual effects fell a little flat for me in the first half. That being said, the second half at least was entertaining enough, and a better “village/village banding together” scene than the Bryce Dallas Howard “Seven Samurai” episode from last season. I knew there’d be a final stinger right at the end, the same way they revealed Baby Yoda in the first season: I was sure it would be one of the cartoon characters, but it’s more than likely the real Boba Fett, looking pretty much just as crappy as his armor. Which, by the way, why did Fett’s armor look so…bad? Not like, extra weathered from years in the sand, but like, not right? Maybe part of it was the armor just not sitting right on the marshall character, but still. Something was just off. Like, it just didn’t look like Fett’s armor. Anyway, if this episode was an indication of the season I’d say my fears were definitely founded. We’ll get probably a few pockets of decent scenes surrounded by call-outs, both visual and narrative, as they bury the potential this show had further and further under the allure of “I saw something I recognized and I CLAPPED!”

Well, we are abut 9 years in-universe time from A New Hope to the Mandalorian. And 3 years from ROTJ. So, a lot of what we see on Tatooine is basically "the same" as in the OT as it would only be several years old in the Mandalorian. Makes since to see Mos Eisley Cantina look the same (season one), and R5 still kickin' around. And perhaps one of Ani's pod engines would be 40+ years.

But to the casual, non uber SW prop and costume fan, these call-outs really are not THAT obvious.

Interesting that it seems like Boba has been wandering out in the wilderness for eons, but "in-universe" time has only been 3 years since he took a dive into the Sarlaac.

Jeremy Bulloch and Timothy Olyphant are both 1,83m in size.If this Armor is really ROTJ based, why looks it so small on Olyphant?

View attachment 1363447
They may be the same height, but that doesn't mean their body configuration is the same. Maybe Tim has a longer torso than Jeremy, for example.

Also, Tem Morrison is NOT 6", so maybe they changed the scaling so it would sit better on HIS frame.

That could be...look on the right bottom corner of the chest armor...it looks like they had cut off a piece.
But whats with the small helmet?Shrinkage?
I have no pic of the backvent...but I think its also not really screenaccurate.

Yes I said that also in a earlier post...Morrison could look a lot better in this armor.

This helmet is really small...

I really liked this one. I especially enjoyed the bit when mando stops cold when vanth takes his helmet off. lol. Probably the one thing that could stun the character.

Also...are y'all forgetting this armor was yakked up by a Sarlac??

In the EU, fett managed to make it out IN his armor, but had to abandon it for desert survival reasons/too much of it was damaged beyond usefulness.

As for the character at the end, I'm really thinking that's the only time we'll be seeing them. I think it was a "Here they are, in case you had any questions.", & that's it.

I could see it going either way. I'd like to see Mando and Fett cross paths from a "learning what different people think it means to be Mandalorian" stand point. I've got no need for him to end up back in the story from a "boba fett is cool" angle. Though I'm not quite sure how it would go. Fett was not the type of character in the EU to hang out on tatoine for 9 years after he lost one fight. he wasn't a sulker. in the EU he got back off world, hooked up with a few crew, and started right back at it, but without his mando gear.

So we're in new territory. It might even be that we'll find out Fett subscribes to some of the same customs as mando, and didn't think he could/should leave after his dishonor of loosing his gear. we shall see, if he ever shows back up again.

I honestly expect that we're more likely to see Vanth back in that armor near the end of the season than Fett. "Hope our paths cross again".

While I think vanth looked great in the fett armor, it was just a different look. As has been mentioned, fett had a thicker flight suit underneath the vest. he also had a visible collar bone plate, and the neck guard to fill out his neck width. Vanth also wasn't wearing any sort of gut belt. we're used to fett's armor "looking" like it goes down farther, but the truth is that he's got that giant ass gear belt that runs across his stomach. Vanth had nothing even remotely like that, and was wearing a low slung belt, which only added to the different look.

I still don’t love Peli Motto, but I actually really liked this episode. It’s nice to hear Mando actually speak and explain the situation to the villagers. Olyphant is great and I love Cobb Vanth.

sidebar that no one cares about: this episode definitely contradicts AFTERMATH in the description of Vanth acquiring the armor.
