The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

Finally, a new video!

If anyone is interested in providing some feedback, I'm curious if you think this video would be better broken into two separate ones. The first being the update on the work, the second being the bodywork tutorial.

Rise of The MattMobile - Episode 35 - YouTube

Not sure if this is of any help, this is technique I use to get rid of little bits the bog seems to miss, sounds like your outsourcing it now, but anyway......

I dont want to come off as rude, but this is taking a long time.

Would you be interested in selling it to me (AS IS), and letting me finish this build?

I'd LOVE to build this car

With all of the time Matt has invested so far, not to mention money.....I'd love to see that number. Do we want to start a pool?? I'm guessing $50-60k over the cost of the body and transportation fees. Minimum.

(n)thumbsdown Rude indeed.

Not cool at all. A project is a project and this one is definitely one of dedication, hard work, and perseverance. I think that it's important to remember that it's the journey that matters most not necessarily the destination. And not to speak necessarily for Matt, but I can't imagine that dealing with cancer over the last number of months didn't impact life in general let alone things like this project.

Keep it going Matt!!! We're all still following your work!

Best,

Dave

I must chime in here being a classic car guy. I have seen many friends and myself included get offers about once a week or month from someone "stopping by" or "leaving a business card" on a project classic car asking it if it is for sale and such. Hell I had my chevelle out on the street for less than 48 hours after doing a body, paint and electrical restoration and was given two different offers of 10 grand. Most if not all of us take this with a grain of a salt. Is it a little rude, sure but in my opinion no more than bumping into someone on the street or subway and not apologizing or something. So over all not that rude, however 1 outta 10 or 20 times it will work in reverse so I consider it is an acceptable method to getting a car and a double edged sword. I know one or two friends who acquired their classic project cars this way, although it took them years and years and it was left sitting/rotting away in a yard/barn. The more respectable way would of been to send Matt a PM and not put it so out in the open. However what is done is done, do not give the guy such a hard time about it. Yes it may still be a labor of love and such, however we should all let Matt chime in here before jumping down this person's throat. He made a mistake(and in my opinion a small one) by simply not sending Matt ad PM, instead he put it out in the open. Sure Real life gets in the way of projects, but sometimes Real life gets in the way so much people are forced to sell projects, so let Matt chime in and see his opinion on selling it and what not

Do not get me wrong I am still rooting for Matt to finish this project, I would love to see it completed and up and running also would love to see some of my small percentage of hard work done on the car in person when it is completed so I can say "I did this and that to help it get on the road". However as I stated before sometimes life gets in the way so much we are forced to sell projects we may of had many ideas for or thousand of hours of love and labor. Only Matt can decide if it is "for sale" till then I am sure Matt appreciates all the support but ultimately the decision and such is in his hands. To Syrus54 I admire you asking, and please keep up the dedication in doing so it may pay off. However 1st off general rule of thumb as stated before ask in private(email/fb/pm if asking over the net) next ask say every few months(3-6) not twice in a day. I understand your curiosity for wanting to get it and finish a build. However luck may not be on your side on this one, so if nothing else keep trying here, but also look around people still make shells for these and with some of same amount of hard work Matt has done I am sure you can build one that is just as cool, and to your own style. Also make sure you check out all his videos when you do start building one(if you do not get Matt's) so you can learn from his experience and see what he did right and wrong and speed up your own build by not making the same mistakes and by knowing what to do ahead of time to fabricate stuff to get yours out on the road.

That's really looking great! I'm still surprised that it fits in your garage!?
so are you going to get the suit to match the car? I'm sure you cod pick one up at complete the look.
I'm sure you said it already but is that body one piece?

Well... i have no idea how much you've spent...
I'm guessing.... $2,000 for the Donor Car... a few hundred for odds and Ends....

Of course, I know a fiberglass guy locally, and he charges 20-grand to make the Mould, and make a body from Scratch... Really, the Batmobile Body is the kicker. Depending on what THAT cost you, it's probably the Most-expensive part. My guess is $6,000~ total invested so far.

So, how's my Guess? Anywhere near the Ball Park?

Well, there ya go, Matt; a whole six grand.
As a machinist whose labor is fairly regularly under-valued, I'd say this takes it to a new level.
I'll stick with my previous post.

LOL is the most over-used phrase on the internet,
but I actually DID!

Oh, and let's not forget labor. But I could easily outsource that at $.05 an hour in Indonesia, and it looks like maybe you've put a solid 10 hours in....

$6000.50.

What kind of discount are you willing to give me? :lol

I'm guessing this guy hasn't even read the thread or watched the videos and is just trolling to light a fire under us all.

You're adorable!!!!

Thanks for the laughs, Syrus. That was fun. I'm sorry my project isn't moving along fast enough for you. I recommend you check out some foam iron man builds, as those tend to come together very quickly. Perhaps those threads will be more to your liking. Best of luck on the forum!

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! OMG! That is hilarious. Oh...my sides hurt. Either you are 14 years old OR have never built anything in your life.

Your estimates are spot on, if you live in another galaxy. Seriously though, that was a funny joke Syrus. You're a funny person.

Now that Matt has chimed in and made many of us laugh(not me I choose the higher road)

May I offer you some words of wisdom from a car guy. As you yourself said

Well... i have no idea how much you've spent...

You come here with an extreme lowball offer understanding Matt probably invested the same amount in the shell(as you say your guy would). As this is both a prop and a car. The value on the prop part of it or the shell does not decrease. So now if you would of considered that into your offer and say come with a offer of 30 thousand minimum. That I am sure Matt might of considered and we all would of considered fair, but now all most of us are going to do is laugh and mock you. Me however I am gonna take the higher road and offer you some words of wisdom

Here is where a reasonable offer would of been and I am just gonna break it down into simple math

Considering you claim a shell is worth(~20k) This of course does not include the shipping cost of having it sent from wherever he purchased it and towed to him.
Donor Car let's assume on the safe side as it was a car with low miles and a studio screen used car(~4 to 6k )
Matt's unknown hours of labor not only trying to attach the frame to the shell and clean up the shell(Lets say another (~5k to 10k) as you know that no shell is going to come off perfect unless you manage to somehow steal the studio mold(which I do not even think exists still)

So all together say 30-50k would of been more than a fair offer, or at least something most people would not of mocked you for. Sure you still would have work to do but as I have seen these sell for 70-100 grand completely built that offer of 30-50k is still about 50% of the value. I hope this info helps you. Maybe time to invest in saving towards your own Batmobile. I would suggest at you at least watch all Matt's videos and see what mistakes and correct things he has done while building his so you can save yourself some of the time and not make the same ones or not have to guess what to do in the same situations.

Good luck to you on your own project!
