The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

This might be a Chevyh0tr0d question, but would adding a spacer to only one wheel have a negative impact on steering, tracking etc?

Congrats on the new Casa / workshop etc. It must be a great feeling to lay down some primer....It gives it that 'One major steep closer' look.

Beats me man! With any luck, this baby will do more relaxing than driving, so hopefully it wont matter. Lol.

It really would depend on the geometry of the car which I can not say for sure with out having measurements(of which I have not done). Also it would depend on the the width of the tires, and the thickness of the spacer. It would also depend on the space of clearance between the tires and the wheel wells. Last and most important it would depend if the spacer was added to the front or rear wheels. As this is being run of a late model(90s) caprice/impala body anything done on one of the rear wheels would not affect steering to much as the steering and such is on the front wheels of the car. The only thing adding a spacer to one of the rear wheels would do it make the tire wear a bit uneven, but this again would depend on the overall geometry of the car, thickness of the spacer and width of the tires.

My progress on the wheel well reshaping is moving along. Using my router that i purchased for tardis building, along w a home made jig, i made this.

Can't wait to see it done, go go go!!! :D

You and me both dude!

The past few days have continued to be extremely productive in the shop. I dare say I've done more work on the car in the month of December than in the entirety of 2013. Sad, but true :(

Today I glassed in two more support boxes. These two are RIGHT at the rear end, and will help lift up the butt about an inch. The shell curves down significantly on the back end, which is a flaw in the mold/pull. I'm going to fix a little bit of it with support arms, and the rest will have to be resculpted/re-glassed.

I also did a bunch of work on the two front under-fender pieces. Basically they just needed some clean up, a seam patched up with filler putty, and I laid in a little bit of extra fiber on the back side just to toughen them up. Next step for them is to build a lip on the shell to attach them to.

The BIG news is that we ONCE AGAIN repositioned the engine. Because we are finally getting down to the nitty-gritty of mounting the shell onto the frame, a lot of attention is being paid to the location of things. before we were just not being this specific. The newfound attention has revealed a lot of new... challenges. One of which is the height of the engine. Because we have established what the ride height of the frame will be (which is 1.5" higher than resting on the bumpstops) AND we have formalized exactly where the shell will be sitting in relation to the ground, we realized the engine needs to be lowered an inch.

Since Bo is such an amazingly talented dude AND he happened to build the mounts in such a way that they could be easily modified, Bo banged it out in just a couple of hours this morning.

Modified engine mounts.

Good thing i saved the hoist i built! We needed it to access the engine mounts, and it made glassing in the new support boxes a total piece of cake.

I did sell it! Had it on the market for ten days then got an all cash offer. Purchased it at the bottom, sold at the top.

Main reason I sold was because I saw the outrageous prices that other houses in my neighborhood were selling for. It was the most profitable 2 years of sitting on my rear end ever!!

Matt,

Things are moving on very nicely! Do you have an estimated completion date or is it a "it gets done when it gets done" type of project? Either way its looking great brother!
