The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

I don't want to press the issue Matt, but just a thought: If you mount the turbine in a simple housing that holds it in front and back, possibly with ball bearings or whatever around the inside, and the "fan blades" of the turbine are slightly angled, the air running through them will make it spin while the car is moving. It's pretty low effort/cost.

Since my first pass at addressing this didn't seem to take, I'll try again. Let me try to put it into a context that will make some sense, specifically to you. What if I told you that *I* think you should build another tennant suit. After all, it's just a simple suit, right? It's pretty low effort/cost, as it's just a suit. I mean, what could be so hard about it? You've already made one, so make another. Right??

Prince Neo, just go ahead and build an iron man helmet. It's pretty simple, pretty low effort and cost. After all, everyone else is doing it. What's the big deal??

Does that help?

I can't be more clear about it than I already have. I'm not doing it. I don't want to. I don't want to spend the money and effort to do something I don't want to do.

ANNNNNNNND, you both have NO idea what you're talking about when you say it's low effort and cost. You do not know what the pieces I have in front of me look like, you don't know how they're constructed, you don't know their limitations or how they fit together. You don't know how much free space there is under the hood, etc, etc etc etc.

So what may seem like something that is quick and easy to you, as an armchair quarterbacker who has no context or understanding of the project, my interests, or the limitations of the parts, I can assure you that your assumptions are wrong. It's not easy. It's not cheap.

And i have a million other things to attend to that I actually WANT to do, and that I consider important to the build.

A spinning turbine that nobody will ever see or notice is not one of those things.

sheesh.

but who cares! Air bags and tequila!!!!!

Find out how these two things are connected by reading my blog.

no helping Matt with Brainstorming ideas please, he only has a certian amount of time to spend his thirty thousand

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE input and suggestions, and much of it has been absolutely critical to the success of the project so far.

What's winding me up is people telling me they're upset because I'm not building my car their way. And then people telling me the same thing again after I've said I'm not doing it :D

Well, if I were you, I'd put a real jet engine in it. It would be pretty simple...

:lol

Kidding aside, great job so far, Matt. I don't envy you the putty and sanding work on that shell. I think living with a bit of imperfection is the only way to go and stay sane.

I didn't get any work done on the MattMobile today, as I was working on the Chrysler. The shifting box locked up due to a very common problem. I was able to fix it without any cost! I feel pretty good about it!! :D

Sorry man, it was just an idea. I figured you didn't want to do a motorized turbine, which would definitely be more work than it's worth, then maybe something more rudimentary would interest you. Sorry I pissed you off with my random idea. Not saying the thing needs to spin, just trying to help.

EDIT: To compare it to something I'm working on, the hidden blade in my AC costume, I've had people recommend I make the "ultimate" hidden blade, which is totally impractical and in some ways impossible, but I've had people suggest less complex alternatives that achieve some of the same results and I'm glad they brought them up. I wouldn't have thought of them myself because before the suggestion it was kind of an all or nothing in my head. My post wasn't criticism on the build or suggesting the car would be less impressive without a spinning turbine, I was just trying to be helpful and maybe give you an idea that might actually interest you.

Also, I feel a bit insulted by your comment, having seen the turbine pieces and been inside the hood of the shell myself, that you think my spacial reasoning skills are so poor. I haven't studied it like you have, but I'm not just pulling ideas out of my butt.

The good news is that saturday is free drinks day at my place, so we can finalize turbine discussion then :p

Matt,

I think with all your prior prop building experience, and long term study for this project - you are just being realistic with your goals for this build.

Taking on too many bells and whistles would just add too much time, labor, and money. And you have your budget and target set. Stay the course. You can always mod it or add to it later.

In the end, that fact is...... sooner and not later!

Yes. You will have your very own Batmobile that you built! :thumbsup

and we will not....:cry

This is the one thing I hated about building KITT. Build by Committee. It was always "you should do this", "that isn't right", "that isn't screen accurate", "x's parts are better than y's", blah blah blah.

This isn't a condemnation on anyone or their posts but merely me saying I know how Mr. Munson feels. If I ever build another car I will never post or blog about it again. Although I met a lot of great people in the process it became very burdensome to have to build my car for other people.

Bah, I'm sure I responded too harshly. For the record, I consider Risu a good friend, and I apologize for the offense. Not my intention at all. My intent was more to give some insight and perspective, not come off as harsh. Now can we smokum prop peace pipe???

Looks like building will come to a crawl for the next few days, as I'm switching into party mode. Lots of last minute things to take care of before folks start showing up, and then it will be clean up. Bo is coming back next week to get started on the engine move, and I've already got another episode of ROTMM shot. Just need to edit it.

Gregg, I think my plan from here on out will simply be to not comment on things that I've either already answered, or are "feature requests". lol

Matt charge for photo's of people sitting in the shell while making car noises, it will help with the build cost ;)

This is another reason I am glad I am waiting to sit in the "matt mobile" till it is done. He(Matt) will be so excited the car runs he will forget all about charging for pictures to sit in the car, along with leaving the keys lying around for me to take a little "Hot Rod joy ride" on the 5 freeway :lol

For reference, hinting at stealing my car is a sure fire way to never get to sit in it, much less get behind the drivers wheel.

Just wanted to show a picture of me on the Batmobile taken in 1990-1991 when my family was in Gran Canaria
