The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

One of the biggest replica scratch builds I've ever seen..
Anyone one and buy a deloran but it takes a genius and a lot of time to do what you've done.. Well done Matt
Keep up the superb work

After a lot of thought and consideration, I've come to the conclusion that what I'm building is a batmobile replica, not a hot rod. I don't want/need it to go fast. I don't need amazing handling. I just need it to sit there and look pretty, and occasionally go for a light drive. This will not go on the freeway. It'll just go around the block, or onto a trailer.

With that said, I think I can avoid things like re-building the engine, or even adding in a new engine. Don't get me wrong, I totally appreciate your suggestions and expertise... BUT it's outside the scope of this project :D

I give you one year after completion before you see a switch or monitor, gauge etc.

Within 5 I garauntee there will be something... Better brakes, suspension, engine...

I mean... You can keep TELLING yourself that you won't...

I said if I had a new corvette I wouldn't ever need or want to mod it...

Yeah... That worked for about a year! :lol

I think it was bobadebt that had the quote about "wanting is better than actually having"...

Meaning... This being your holy Grail focus for 20+ years... I just dont think it will be as easy as you think to not start dreaming of this and that... Servo controlled gun doors? :angel

We shall see! :p

This is exactly why I was suggesting he do it now. When the shell is off the car and he has such easy access to everything from brakes to the engine etc. However like I said before, I respect his decision and this is his car so he should build it how he wants!!!

Oh I think so too!

I know he will be completely satisfied... For a while! :lol

My suggestion? Don't use TOO much or too strong of locktite on those bolts for the body-frame extensions... :love

Matt,

Echoing what others have said. It's just incredible to see a dream this big coming together. The videos let us all share the fun. Keep 'em coming.

I've read through Tim's blog about the Batberry. Thanks for the link. It has me wondering what exactly your plan of attack will be with different stages of the build. I see you mentioned above mainly wanting a replica that you can cruise around the block and onto a trailer. I'm just really excited and curious to see how you put it all together. And I'm looking forward to continuing to learn some things along the way. From installing those gauges you've got on hand to your approach to building the internal structure.

Do you have plans for cameras to help you see blind spots? A sliding roof mechanism? Any type of guns? Or should I just keep checking youtube?

Keep building.

Ted.

I did a little bit of work on the nose cone yesterday. Cleaning up the seam line, a little sanding. I'm using this piece as a test bed for materials and techniques, as I would much rather screw up something small like this than on the main body. I'm hoping to have BTW come around early next week to start working on installing the airbags. The faster I can get the suspension done and the engine moved, the faster I can start working on mounting the shell.

BTW, yesterday we drove past a car dealership, and there was a Jeep Wrangler 4-door for $30K. I turned to my spouse and said - I know someone that will have a BATMOBILE for that much!

Seeing the video of the shell arriving... so cool. Wish I lived closer so I could come over and just look at it (and help if you needed it).

Hah! well, 30k is my target, but who knows if I'll achieve it!

I did my first hour of sanding today. And yes, I was wearing a respirator. The gel coat sands nicely, and I'm able to eliminate a lot of the lumps that way. The other great thing about this first pass with sand paper is that it reveals all the lumps and pits that will need some filler. Definitely a lot of work, but nothing that I didn't expect.

Don't sand TOO much!

I know people that have screwed up old vette restorations... Trying to get it more "perfect" than it actually was. I know you know Fiberglass. Not trying to insult. Also I personally don't know too much about the batmobile... Other than it looks cool!

Could it be that it was wavy in the movie? Like how most no one noticed vaders lil nuances...

Meaning, don't sand something out that makes it more accurate...

I'm just throwin it out there... May be waay off base!

There is definitely some original wonk in the car that is known to enthusiasts. Some minor asymmetry that you would never see unless you're looking for it. However, My plan is to smooth out all the lumps, even if it is in the original. This is not a restoration, but a beautification project, if that makes any sense.

Though honestly, I think what is most likely is that I will lose interest in it being perfect well before it gets there. Sanding is my least favorite kind of work in the world, and this project is a doozy for it. I guess we shall see.

Tell you what, if you fancy paying for me to come over, and letting me sleep inside the shell, I'll be the sanding guy :)
