The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

Just did a little digging, and there is indeed an Enterprise just down the street that will rent a truck to me with unlimited mileage. IF I decide to go with the place in the valley, this is for sure the route I will go. Thanks guys for all the feedback and suggestions. You all probably just saved me a few hundred bucks!
nice!!

SOmeone else mentioned a tow dolly rental: U-Haul Tow Dolly Loading Video - YouTube

It can hook up to anything with a hitch an won't have a problem towing a frame of a car.

I also think that the Valley is a long way from Irvine. Cant you find a frame shop locally, one that wil tow the frame for you? Just a thought.

Ordered an engine lift plate tonight. From Jegs. Should be here in a few days.

In other news, i had a phone call with a fellow builder the other day that presented ALL kinds of interesting new opportunities. I'm very perplexed about what to do, as I now have a number of really neat options in front of me regarding the stretch and a few other neato things.

Exciting times we live in!

I feel like a complete ******* for not checking this thread earlier. Clone a good % of frame/chasis places died out in the early 90's with unibody cars. They is still a few around but they are either A)Very undermanned and it will take 6 months to do the work or B)Very poor quality work. I know when I went looking for a frame shop to repair my 1st frame after it buckled on me in 2002. I looked for close to 3 months, then after finding one they did such poor quality on the frame I actually lost a full inch of metal going over a dip at 20 mph. This was due to them trying to strech the frame back into the right angle and heating the metal to much to weaken it to become like plastic. Thus I needed to completely do a frame off resto with a entirely new frame. I got lucky and found the one I did who did a superb job on the frame off replacement of another frame I found for my Chevelle. However to find this other one took nearly 3 weeks of google searching, calling car buddies etc. There is a few others out in cali most I know are either out in Woodland Hills, or Hollywood. I am sure if needed I can keep searching, if you would like me to find one closer to you Matt.

also to answer a question I saw in the beginning of this thread

If I remember correctly, they were built on a Impala chassis, which is very similar to the Caprice. However I think it was a earlier model.

Jason Impala and Caprice have the same chassis. They are the exact same car, just different emblems, grilles and options(Motor,Tranmission, brakes etc). Model know as B Bodies(Chevelles/Malibus/Lagunas were A Body and Camaros were F Body till 2002). As far as I know the Chevrolet Bel Air/Impala//Biscayne/Caprice were the same back from 58 to when ever they stopped making the Bel Air and the Biscayne in 75. All 4 were B Bodies. However they kept the Impala and Caprice the same till current. This is something GM is famous for good example Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird both F bodies, and again same body just different emblems, grille and options(Motor, transmission etc)

To have fun with another question I found

Woah woah woah... back up the Mattmobile...
It's possible to go 120 MPH on the 405?

Luck, man!
T

Yes it is entirely possible depending on the time of the day/night. I was doing 160+ on it about a week ago at 9:30 pmish. I might of been going 165-170 not sure the speedo in my parents 2006 E350 tops off at 160 and it was fluttering there for a good 10+ seconds! I also have had my Chevelle at 120+ on the 405 a few months ago. Again not sure how much faster then 120 I was going as the speedo for it tops at 120, and I was doing that speed for a good 5-10 minutes, and the speedo was fluttering past it the whole time. In that instance I assume my speed to only be 135-140, as I have only been clocked by a CHP at 137, and with 6500+ LBS it would be hard to get above 140 even with 450+ horses.

Don't worry Brad, I give free Rides to places you may need work, school, etc, long as you do not mind a speedometer being maxed out or a attempt to make it happen!!! I also test drive cars you may be thinking of buying, but again same rules apply speedo will be maxed out or I will attempt to brake the speedo. The funniest part of my 160+ mph drive is I was running a ZL1 corvette and I managed to get a car length ahead of him then cut him off, and literally make him exit the free way 10 secs later with his tires screeching from slamming on his brakes the whole time!!! This was on the 405 South in case I did not mention this before!!!

This arrived just the other day. It should help me remove the engine.

Didn't you buy an LT1 model? That is for a carb/TBI intake.

Nope, got the wrong one. lol.

In other, and exciting news, I had a visit from my welder guy the other day. He took a look at the car, and spent about an hour talking to me about what I wanted to do. This guy is pretty much perfect for the job, as he is both an experienced and professional welder, and ALSO a passionate car restoration expert. He showed me some of his work, and I was stunned. I feel like I'm in really good hands.

He also made a TON of suggestions that had never occurred to me, and also seem to be missing from many fan builds. Interesting stuff. I will for sure document them as I go.

I am working this week to finish prep for the stretch. I need to remove the exhaust system, and pull out the brake and gas lines that run to the rear. Then we will be ready for the stretch.

The body is due to be here in a couple of weeks ( knock on wood ) and I really want to get the stretch done prior to that.

That's really awesome that you found somebody to help that is so convenient too ! It just shows that it was meant to be. It's getting exciting again with things starting to move forward again, good luck !

Thanks man. I too was REALLY excited to find a guy who is local, and is also super talented. I'm actually considering offloading A LOT of the work onto him, as I know it will not only get done, but it'll get done right.

While it will cost a lot more, I'm confident I'll save a ton of time on learning curve, and mistakes I would otherwise have to undo and redo. I guess when it comes down to it, I'd rather it cost a lot more and actually get it finished, than have it be cheaper and never get done. #KnowWhatImSayin???

It good to hear that tis moving along again :) I thought that you had to wait for the body before the stretch to make sure it fitted ?

when I switched shell providers, I inherited a lot of knowledge. The previous guy had only made one shell prior to mine, and there were a lot of unknowns with it. The current shell has had a thorough shakedown cruise, and much about it is known. Including the necessary wheel base.

Still, extra points for staying on top of the build, Alric! :)

We have this car build thread and the Grapple gun on YouTube, so when's the batsuit thread starting ;)

Haven't checked this thread in a while, I have a car trailer I can loan you, but you would need to come to the SF Bay Area to pick it up & return it, so it is probably not a viable alternative.

I did not film it, but I made a TON of blog posts on the construction of my TDK suit over at my blog. check it out at mattmunson.blogspot.com

Thanks for the offer of the trailer, but yes, distance makes it a tad impractical. Still, I appreciate the offer :)

Matt, In the long run the added cost is probably cheaper if you consider how much your time is worth in undoing and redoing mess ups. I am so glad to see your build is moving forward after such a long pause.
