The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

Hey Gang!

A little news on the MattMobile front. Fellow RPFer Chevyh0tR0d was kind enough to point me in the direction of a place that will handle the chassis stretch, and I'm working on the logistics for that today. Need to line up a tow service that can get my car from Irvine to Canoga Park for relatively cheap. If anyone has any tips, send em along!

I've also gotten confirmation that my body is STILL on track to be finished by the end of Feb, so that's really great news.

I will be having a kick-off party at my place once the shell arrives, so be ready!

Get AAA coverage on the Caprice. Tell the tow truck driver it just broke down and your not a car guy....dont know what happened. But your mechanic is in Canoga Park! When Its finished being stretched, repeat process.:lol

or...

Rent a U Haul Pick up truck ($20) and the flat bed trailer ($54). Thats the cheapest I can think of. They can set everything up before you show up. Go for the smallest truck because you are only towing a frame with wheels (not heavy). Thats the cheapest I can think of besides the above scenario.

Lear, that uhaul tip is a great one. that did not occur to me. I will look into that.

I'm already checking with AAA, as I am already a member. My membership covers towing, but only like 10 miles or something. My hope is that additional miles are cheap. If not, the uhaul option DEFINITELY sounds like a winner.

I love the RPF!!!

Matt,

How long have you been a AAA member? I think with two-year memberships, you can upgrade to "AAA Gold." That should allow you 100 miles per tow, for free. Can't wait to see this project making some progress again!

Bah, looks like AAA is out. Just got off the phone with them, and I am not eligible to upgrade to their gold membership, as I had a car towed within the last year. At regular prices, with AAA it'll be about 600 bucks to tow. So THAT option is out!!! lol

I've still got a few options to look into, including the uhaul one. We shall see.

Just put it back together and drive it up there.....I don't know what the big deal is?

An option definitely worthy of considering :lol

I know a dude who actually will come to my house and do the stretch. He is a bit more expensive than the place in the valley, but if you throw in the costs of transporting the car, it's beginning to look more attractive. I would PREFER to use the auto place, as they have one of them nifty beds where they can straighten the chassis and measure it precisely. But hey, if it's a difference between five or six hundred bucks, I will do without.

I know from experience that when U-Haul advertises the truck at $20, they really mean over a hundred, There are fees they don't tell you about until you do the paperwork, not to mention they get HORRIBLE gas mileage ! You can rent a dolly to tow it if you know someone with a pickup truck.

Weasel, agreed. I've rented enough uhauls in my life to know what "19.99" :) I think the most economical solution is the one you've just described. Rent a trailer, and borrow a truck from a friend to haul it. The trailers from uhaul are very reasonable, and they do not have a per mil cost on them.

All I need now is that magical friend with a truck!!!

I have an idea of how you could get it to the shop, but it might (definately will) sound stupid. You wouldn't happen know anyone with a few horses or oxen would you? :love

As of today, I'm back in the storage unit game! lol. I swore when I bought my house I would never get another storage unit, but I had to break down.

I realized that space in the garage is going to be at an absolute premium, and as it stands there's pretty much stuff EVERYWHERE. My plan is to offload all of the mattmobile related stuff that is not currently in use to the storage unit, then bring it home as needed. Lots of car parts, the seats I purchased for the car, the radiator, the rear exhaust cone, stuff like that. That should fee up plenty of room for the shell when it arrives.

Matt I rented a truck from Enterprise for 39.99 and a tow dolly from U-Haul for 23.99 to tow my brothers car from san antonio to corpus. We had a corporate account so we weren't charged miles as long as the truck was back the next morning by 10 am with a full tank, and the dolly was rented oneway. I think with rental and gas we were out $220.00 total. You're not driving 160 miles one way but if you know someone with a corporate account with a rental agency you might be able to get it done that way.

ETA: If you have a decent sized yard why not just rent or buy a portable storage building for your yard?

Lol. Clearly you've never been to Irvine!! :D I literally have NO yard. I don't mean to say I have a small yard, I mean I don't have one at all :)

Still, good suggestions. If I can find a truck rental place that doesn't charge mileage (of which I know there are many) I think I will be golden.

Tonight Mike Senna brought over the engine hoist.

It feels like things are really starting to pick up again, which is really nice. I need to buy an engine lift plate next.
