The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

Hey Matt, just a thought, have you planned on buiding a turntable into your garage floor? Backing that beast up may be a bit of a challenge!

Just kidding of course, but have you any desires to turn your garage into a matching Mattcave?

Monster Dave! You are a riot, dude! :D I think once I'm done with the MattMobile, I will put down my prop making tools for a while and take a much deserved break.

In other news, a new video of ROTMM is uploading now. This one is pretty cool, as it shows the shell being put into place, and also reveals just how flexible the darn thing is.

Well, trouble in paradise. Looks like my neighbor, the one who has complained about me and called the cops on my party, has gone to the board and filed a noise complaint about me. Which is silly, as I really only do work during normal hours, but it is what it is.

I already have a re-location plan in mind, which may ACTUALLY end up speeding up the build. Who knows. I may end up renting an airplane hangar up near LA, which would give me all the space I need, and no cranky neighbors complaining about noise.

Downside is that it's about an hour away.

Upside is that I would probably drive up there and work three days straight with ZERO distractions before coming back, which might speed things up. As it is, I only spend a couple hours a day on the build, as I have so much else going on around the house.

We shall see.

It took me two days to read and view the videos.
This is amazing!!!

Rod, welcome to the madness, and thanks for checking out the videos! Crazy that it's been going on for a year already!!!

Let us hope that the best is yet to come.

That truly is silly :( What did he complain about exactly to the board ? Decibel levels ? If so, what are the 'limits', and if you are surpassing them, can you muffle / sound-proof the garage (el-cheapo insulating boards ?) instead of renting out something else ?

Foolish neighbors! :darnkids They just ruined their chance to be first to ride shotgun in the Mattmobile. :behave

or maybe its not the welding, sanders, or hammering noises, but the real complaint is Matt blasting his stereo system as he works? :lol

To be frank, the guy is a total ******, and obviously has anger management issues. I know this because of all the times I hear him yelling at his wife. The fact that he expects complete silence during ALL hours of the day is ridiculous, but I guess that's not my call, but is instead up to the board. Oh well. The joys of living in Irvine.

Since Matt lives in a "HOA planned development" (Home Owners Association), I am sure that within their CCR's (Covenants, Codes & Restrictions) there stipulates something about noise and/or usage of the garage. I imagine there is something that states people can not use their garage for building anything or the like.

As HOA Board member myself (a whole 3 months now) we're a neighborhood and not a condo type association, so the rules are different. We have a guy who's always working on his dirt bike's and no complaints. But the first thing I'd do is propose a Batmobile variance OoohYea!

HOAs are probably one of the worst ideas ever in my opinion....because I feel you never truely own your home, because too many missed HOA payments and they can try and take your house.

But on the noise issue....I use power tools all the time, play drums, electric guitar, and have yet to get a noise complaint... so your neighbor is just an *****

I can't stand our HOA. They take annual fees from us and promise to put the money toward a neighborhood playground, etc. We never see anything happening with it.

I'm really enjoying the build, Matt. It was awesome meeting you at Dragon*Con last year and talking to you about it.

I really don't blame the HOA, and I personally have benefited immensely from living in this community with all of its rules. It's give and take. I guess I'll have to see what happens.

Oh, and for the record, this is the same guy that called the cops to shut down my MattMobile party at 10:00 PM. On a Saturday. Because we were talking too loud.

Had something like that once, the guys next door to me had their neighbors call the cops on their christmas party at 9pm cause we were being too loud, all 10 of us in his side lot listening to two people play their acoustic guitars singing hotel California. Turns out that it's cause they hate the guys who live next to us for hiring their cousin as their gardener. People can be petty and dumb, I hope things swing in your favor Matt.

That might give you reason to call the cops on him, if it sounds like there might be a domestic disturbance occurring.

This is the truth. One of the Ladies (the resident HOA bully) of my mother's HOA showed up at my mom's house and threatened to put a lien on my mom's house because she was late with her HOA payment. (Now, just so it's clear, my mom was a DAY late with her payment) She also made sure to let mom know that she worked in the City Manager's office & would use her position there to make sure that the lien would go through.

Mom let me know what was said and I showed up and got the lady over to the house, where she repeated her threat to me, which I happened to record. I then asked her, "So that I have this straight, you are threatening to use the power of your City job in a private HOA matter?" To which she responded yes.

The next day, I went down and met with the City Manager, played the recording for him, and informed him that if this indeed happened, I would be consulting an attorney and filing a lawsuit against him, her, the city, and the HOA. Needless to say, I got swift resolution on my threat. The City Manager assured me that there would be no interference from the City, the woman lost her job with the city, and after I went to the HOA board president as well, she lost her position on the HOA board. I HATE HOA's. I'll never live in a neighborhood that has one.

Don't let it get you down Matt, and keep up the awesome work on the Mattmobile!

I had a similar problem with a neighbor that complained I fired up my 78 nova small block @ 2:30pm on a Saturday and that I had too many people eating outside (3) including myself. Some people are just put on this earth to be annoying!
