The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

Here's the current state. Garage is all clean, frame is trimmed to length, hoist is all prepped.

Holy Crap Mattman....I just had an idea. The shell weighs 3-500lbs right? What if you you replaced that top beam with a longer 4x6 so it ran over top the chassis and put the other floor brace on the right side of the garage. (Right side as looking at your picture). Then put rollers/wheels on the mounting point of the hoist. The body could then be rolled left to right (and back again many times) over to the chassis side and back. Im just thinking of the logistics of being a one man show. Rolling the chassis in and out of the garage must be a bear by your self.

Sounds good on the napkin at the bar at least.

Edit Edit.....do you have wheels on the bottom of the hoist rig? If so nevermind:)

Christian, I'm glad you're on my side, sir!!

But yes, the hoist does have wheels.

I also have Bo The Welder at my disposal to help roll the chassis out. In an ideal world, once the chassis is under the shell, I won't have to roll it out again. I expect to use the hoist to lift it again and again, but I don't think I'll need the shell OFF the chassis.

Worst case, I scrounge up an extra pair of hands to help move the chassis.

Still, I like the way you think sir!

I've got another sponsor lined up too. Can't wait to get the banner!

New episode of the web series is uploading now. Check it out in about an hour.

Matt, what's that small metal tube sticking up vertically and wiggling around when you and Bo were moving the stretched chassis? One of the rear brake lines?

I will add that to the FAQ right now :D

I like your point about "finished" being a relative concept. I'm totally starting to understand the sentiment viscerally with the vintage Camaro restoration I'm undertaking. Just getting the darn thing drivable will be a heck of a job. Making a project car "pretty" is a whole other level of insanity. ;)

Tim, we have not yet hooked up the lines for the airbags. It was probably one of those.

Today was an interesting day. I won't go into too much detail (as I'm tired) but today was both a day of great accomplishment, and some non-trivial set backs. Nothing that cannot be recovered from very quickly, but mounting the shell revealed a few issues that I had not anticipated.

It looks really cool though :D

pretty cool, now as far as the widshield/entrance is concerned... will it be a keyless entry or do you have to open it manually?

I was also wondering how the cockpit 'lid' was actuated?? Will it be manual or auto?

Also, im thinking of video diary like yours for my new workshop build. I know you said it was a canon hfs200 cam, but can I ask how you are recording your sound mate??

Is that the on cam mic? it seems to do well with both your voice from behind and bo's voice from in front?

Thanks
Weequay

I purchased an add on boom mic for the camera. It's not perfect, but as you said, it captures sound omni directionally. which is good for me.

I'm actually going to start shooting my videos differently. I don't really like the whole "walking camera with voice over" thing. I want to do more tripod shots where I'm in front of the camera so I can point at stuff. Then I'll shoot insert shots and edit them in.

As for the canopy, it will ultimately end up being electronically controlled. Press a button, it rolls forward. Press the button again, it rolls closed. BUT it might start life as a manually operated thing. Remember, the primary goal right now is to get it driving. An automated canopy will not help with that goal :D

Hard to believe, but in three days it will be the one year anniversary of my first youtube video. I made sure to debut it on june 23, which is the day that Batman hit theaters back in 1989.

I will be releasing the next video on the 23rd, which will show the shell being lowered onto the chassis. A big milestone. I plan on also putting together a quick retrospective episode, in case people want to get caught up on the project quickly, rather than watching all 25 episodes.

Make sure you add the appropriate coming down from heaven type music. aaaaaAAAAaaaaah!

That's so nice. The wheel that's just visible looks fantastic with the shell. I don't think I'd given much thought to how they would look together until now.

Matt, your open garage must be a popular spot. I can just imagine people driving by saying, 'Holy crap, that guy's building a batmobile!' :lol
