The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

Good point, I'll have to look into it since I would just need to hook it into my keyless entry and I have the wires and all that, I just need the switch, I'll see if it'll cost anything extra when I get my paint done since that's gonna cost near $600.

Sorry for accidentally hijacking your thread Matt, i totally didn't mean to.

I hijacked it 1st he can blame me. As far as the 500 dollar estimate goes, that would only be if you had a fresh painted car and wanted it done. Then you are talking Sanding Repaint etc. For what you are talking about figure you need about a extra 100 or so(200 to be on the safe side) for the slight little extra work, you want done such as the wire being hooked up switch being mounted to the body etc.

Ah, well yea, the whole car needs to be repainted anyway, I was going to get it red and black to give it the feel of the old Mach 1 mustang, and get the interior done to feel the same. (I love classic cars.)

Well then there you go have the switch work done at the same time, and you are only out of pocket a extra bill or two. I apologize for not clarifying at the start the circumstances to which the 500 dollars worth of work needed to be done for that switch.

That love is something we share, all though I naturally dislike most Fords.

Haha, well Ford's aren't the greatest, but it triumphs a mitsubishi Galant. :D

I would really love an old 71 Plymouth Barracuda or a 59 cadillac eldorado

All this talk of classic cars is making me think of my Dad's old '69 Camaro, manual, numbers-matching, single owner, that's spent the last 25 years or so under a tarp in the backyard. He's been saying he's going to restore it for at least a decade, but hasn't lifted a finger. I'm thinking I should just take it off his hands and have the resto started myself, since it's a real shame to let a car like that rot away. I'll probably start by getting the rims refinished and mounting good tires, so I can at least move the thing...but am not sure what size tire I need.

It is such a shame to see any classic car, rot away. I would say for now just get the same size tire as replacements. Then when the car is done or the body work is being done when you decide to get new suspension work done, have different tires put on then. The sizing would depend on what you want to do with the Camaro(Drag it/Car Show it/Weekend Driver it). Once you come up with this plan feel free to look into tires. If you need any help please do not hesitate to PM me, as I feel I know classic cars the most out of any other car on the road.

Thanks! I definitely will send you a PM, as I need to convert from vintage to modern sizing systems and don't want to screw it up. Apart from some rust in the front quaterpanels (from road spray), the body and frame are intact. At least my dad put it up on blocks. He also has some OEM GM replacement parts in the garage, which will save a lot of money and hassle in the future. I'll probably hire a shop to do most of the heavy lifting, as my work schedule and lack of knowledge will be bottlenecks.

As of this morning, the project just crossed the 20k mark! whoohoo!! I purchased about 800 bucks worth of gauges for the dashboard, which pushed the total cost over 20k. I firmly believe in my heart that most of the major expenses are done with. (Famous last words, I know)

The only things that really remain that I'm aware of are the two Ferrari tail lights, which I should be able to get for under 500 bucks total, and all the steel I will need to buy to build out the frame and cokpit. I will need to drop a few bucks to have the engine relocated and the airbags installed, but that will be it for service expenses.

Oh wait, I just remembered I need to buy the air ride system too. That'll probably be another 1,500 bucks. Still, I think it'll take some work to push the project past the 30k mark, which is kind of what I'm hoping will be the ceiling. That was what my original blue-sky number was.

I think I budgeted $15k for KITT. When it got to $16k and I got hosed on the engine and knew it would take another $6-7k to get it finished, I bailed. I don't regret it.

I guess my point is that if I had known it would have only cost me $15k more to have the 89 Keaton Batmobile vs KITT.....I would have sold my mother to come up with the difference. I think that's an amazingly respectable number for such an phenomenal piece.

Well, great news.

It is ALL on. Just got word from my shipper that he is arriving at the shop tomorrow morning to pick up the shell and detail parts. After that, it should just be a few days before it arrives on my doorstep.

I am currently accepting applications for volunteers to help unload the thing. It might be during work hours. In Orange County. I provide booze and some lunch.

If only I wasn't across the continent from you. Best of luck, take lots of pictures, I can't wait to see more progress.
