The 89 MattMobile Build Thread.

Matt, that rocks. Have you sourced a place to paint it? I remember when I had my older Corvette painted that fiberglass is NOT cheap to paint. Also what color? I know that the original was a deep purple but I believe that was so it would show up on camera better.

The original was black, with purple and green lowlights. I saw it in person, so I know this to be true. It was very subtle, and actually looked pretty corny in person. I do not plan on reproducing that effect, but instead will just go for a satin black.

I remember reading it had sort of an iridescent tone over the black...

Yeah, this is one case where I 100% think you should go with "what you think you see" as opposed to 100% prop accurate.

So may projects start and never get finished...
This baby is getting done! :)

Wil absolutely nothing invested, and no ties to this project what so ever....

"I'm excited!"

...if for nothing else, just to see the amazing steps Matt has made in making this dream a reality. A lot can be leaned from this project, and I am not talking about making a Batmobile!

Thanks for sharing Matt...

Thanks Gil! You are far too kind sir! Still A LONG way to go, but it's definitely a lot of fun to share the journey with everyone here.

Matt, time to install biometric ignition and locks...

I guess I need to modify my plan to include knock out drugs, a ice bath so I can remove a hand and or eye if needed

Absolutely. Already in my plan. I'm also going to have a few hidden dead man switches that will totally disconnect the ignition. It won't stop someone with a tow truck, but I'm working on countermeasures for that too :D

Do not worry Matt, my plan already has a plan to remove any dead man switches as a true car guy can probably find them:cool

I can't wait to see how you put these in, I wanted to modify my mustang with a button just to unlock the doors. :thumbsup

Sorry Matt I am hijacking your thread for a moment. Neo this is commonly referred to as "Push button entry" you will see this occasionally on "Hot Rods and custom cars". A good body shop should be able to hook this up for you. The amount of labor would depend on where you want the button placed on your mustang. I would say a good ball park price for this would be about 250-500 dollars for this. If you need help finding a reputable body shop, I would use the following link which will take you to a search engine for Triple A verified repair shops.

Once you have this list, and have a few other shops in mind call BAR(Bureau of Automotive Repair) and ask for a history on those places. You might also be able to get this online(not sure). Pretty much figure any place that has more then 1 BAR Black mark against them, (I would expect shops to have 1 as a lot of time a disgruntled customer will file a complaint clamming they ripped them off even if they did not). However if they have more then 1 they are probably going to try the following

Con you for more money by claiming "it took longer then it actually did" Or by Coning you for more money for something like a "clear coat they did not put on"

However if you go to a dealership to have this done, most if not all of their body shops are very very reputable so I would not worry to much. It is most often private owned body shops that are trying to rip you off, however just as a precausion I would still contact the BAR and see if any of the Dealership body shops have any black marks against them.

Thank you very much for all this information, I will keep it in mind when I'm ready to put this piece in. I am considering doing it myself however since I am not a fan of other people working on my car as I do not know what they are doing and if they are doing it in a way I approve. I wouldn't even let Tire's Plus put my tires on, I took it to my friends shop and watched him do it. :behave

All good info man! I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Don't hold back, buddy!

I used to have to flip a switch hidden near my leg on my old vette, the key had to be in and in on position, then the switch kicked the starter. Chicks thought it was cool.:rolleyes

My new vette doesn't have a key... Button to get in, button to get out, button to start. Should be fun when the fob battery dies! :sick

At a car show before the release of the C6... A model was posing for pic... The guy asked her for a pic behind the wheel... The battery was disconnected...

Now there are manual pulls on the floor.

My point in all this? They have the system worked out and people use them all the time in hot rods... Maybe something to look into?

The only problem with this, is it would take working knowledge of body work, unless you just wanted the switch some where stupid like underneath a fender. However if you wanted something like done in the the original XXX Vin Diesel movie(Not porno movies:behave Pervs) unless you had many hours of free time, and were good at painting. Then you would have to let a body shop do the metal and paint work for it. This is all your choice though as it is your car. When you are ready to do it too, let me know I will ask my national chevelle car club if they would recommend any places out your way in FL.

I have something similar in my Chevelle, where unless a hidden switch is pressed before I start my car, with the key in the ignition and it turned one past accessory position(this way I can still turn on my radio and stuff). If this switch is not pressed a hidden wire leading to my ignition coil sparks and shorts and completely cuts power to my distrubutor, making it impossible to get power to my motor. Took me about 3 sets of Coil Wires and spark plug wires+ a new distrubtor to get it to work right. Yes I know there is a danger of frying my distrubtor, and it draining my battery if people try to hot wire my car to many times in one sitting. However I believe I got the voltage drop from my battery and the voltage spark amount low enough to where it will not fry my distrubtor, even if it does I would rather pay a few hundred bucks for these parts to run my car again then have no chevelle.

Back on topic... Matt if you feel you need help with anything from kill switches, do not hesitate to give me a ring(If you need my # again PM me), if I do not know I can direct you to some So Cali People who would for sure.

Thanks, I wanted to put the switch in a wheel well where it wouldn't really require repainting or under the body of the car somewhere in the back. I wasn't really planning on doing it anytime in the next year or so though, but I defiantly need to look into it more and you all are most defiantly right, I'm probably going to mess something up, the car still needs to have the interior replaced and the exterior paint re-done, then I have to change out the transmission, exhaust, and engine with a V8, THEN I'll be ready to start doing crazy secret stuff to it. :love

Right on it is always better to do the Most expensive stuff 1st, however if you do plan doing something to unlock the doors, and want a switch on the outside of the car XXX(Vin Diesl) 67 GTO style, that might be something to be done while having the body work is being done. I say this as I am sure you can attest if you have seen any car/bike shows like American Chopper, American HotRod, Overhauling. It is a lot easier to do body work switches/customization on bare metal, then a painted part!!!

Good point, I'll have to look into it since I would just need to hook it into my keyless entry and I have the wires and all that, I just need the switch, I'll see if it'll cost anything extra when I get my paint done since that's gonna cost near $600.

Sorry for accidentally hijacking your thread Matt, i totally didn't mean to.
