Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

This is getting ridiculous, people. We haven't seen a single finished frame of the movie, let alone a trailer, and everybody is declaring it a complete disaster, without knowing so much as the story, and for what? Because Michael bay's name is attached? Because the Shredder doesn't look the way you wanted? It all sounds like a child throwing a tantrum because his mom wont let him have an ice cream.

Fool me once...

No, seriously. I never saw another Transformer film or Michael Bay film in the theater after the first Transformers movie. I knew the moment when the first Transformers ended that Michael Bay has little to no interest about these intellectual properties he's handed. He'll only do them because he probably gets a heavy paycheck in the end and is able to throw in random and gratuitous elements that only serves to indulge his tastes, which pretty much boils down to racially offensive humor, glorifying the military and treating women as eye candy.

That's fine and dandy but once again you are confusing the fact that one is films that Bay directed himself and the other is a film that is produced by Bay and about 5 other companies.

I really doubt this will be a bayfest type of movie.

With Megan Fox as the female lead, a well established asian villain being white washed and characters who aren't supposed to have lips now having lips, it certainly has his fingerprints all over it.

Has everybody forgot that he wanted to make them LOVEABLE ALIENS until the internet said we'd hunt and kill him if he did?!

Michael Bay has a proven track record of dreck. I mean, I've never kissed a decomposing goat either, but I can just assume it's not gonna be something I enjoy.

Horrible analogy...there is an enormous difference between a movie and a decomposing goat. In fact I find it disturbing that your mind went there first.

I don't think people realize just how few movies Bay has directed himself: 10, and the only ones that are consistently panned are Pearl Harbor and the two transformers sequels. That's it. I have seen most of the movies Bay has directed and I can watch Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon, and The Island over and over again. All the other movies people hate and hate him for have him as a producer. Producers have a lot of pull, yes, but the final say comes from the studio. There's not just one person you can blame for a bad movie.

We must just have different taste. I think every movie you listed is either totally forgettable or outright obnoxious. I actually walked out of the first Transformers with like fifteen minutes left. I couldn't even be bothered staying to the end I was so bored.

The Platinum Dunes stuff he's been at least partly responsible for has mostly been pretty awful too (with a few bright spots, admittedly).

More like Teenage Mutant Thug Turtles! Feast your eyes on Peter Venkman in the back , oh no .....is that you Donny.

He's like , oh I got this heavy Proton-pack on my back , let me grab this stick over here, because the viewers expect me to.

Just let them put the shades on, it might soften the Epic "Fail".

On the one hand, my reaction to the Turtle design is a resounding "Meh, who cares?" It's not as if the 80s interpretation of the comics was all that much less broad in terms of each character being a one-note character. So, have they REALLY trod that heavily upon the original design? And in the original Eastman and Laird comics, the turtles weren't even that distinguished. Their main difference was in the weapons they wielded and who led the team (Leo). But the rest? Not really all that distinct as I recall.

But I think I also get the deep sense of loathing that others have for this. There is something decidedly "lowest common denominator," which is all too common in stuff with Bay's name on it. They go for the most basic, over-the-top, and dumbest approach to things, and the turtles' designs strongly suggest that this same approach is being taken with this film. I'm not saying it needs to be high art, but the film also doesn't need to treat it's audience like a bunch of morons, and let's face it: that's EXACTLY what Michael Bay films do. They assume the average audience member is lucky to have two brain cells to rub together, and structure the film accordingly. More than just being a fun ride that doesn't take itself seriously, there's a tone to Bay's movies that seems aggressively condescending. Like "I'm gonna make the dumbest piece of **** I can, and you're gonna love it because I put 'splosions in it, you ****ing idiots. Now shut up and give me your money that you are clearly too stupid to be allowed to keep." To me, that's the vibe I get from Bay's movies.

Plenty of other action films and action directors and producers make over-the-top movies. The original Robocop, for example, is RIDICULOUSLY over-the-top, but it is so as a parody of action films that manages to simultaneously be exciting. The first Pirates of the Caribbean didn't take itself seriously, either, but it managed to be a rollicking good time that seemed to treat the audience as if it was in on the joke and part of the fun, too. But Bays' films just have this particularly stupid quality to them, and I can see where people would get that same sense from the design of the turtles. If you're a fan of the originals, I can see where this would particularly irritate you. But even if you aren't, I can see where this ends up being just yet another crapfest from Michael Bay that you've had about enough of. It's not even a question of "ruining childhoods," as much as just making crappy movies that waste gajillions of dollars.

all you had to say was megan fox. I wonder if they even bothered to have an audition for the role, or if they just said 'lets cast her and be done with it.' ugh. she's not even that hot.

if these where one shot variants, I might think they'd look kind of neat.. but for a major motion picture? ugh. still hate the b ling and shoes on mikey. and that stupid waste scarf makes him look like a hippy.

I enjoyed the Island, but once they recycled scenes from it and put it in Transformers film, that's were Bay really just said, "You guys are idiots that love splosions, and I don't care." It's like there is no soul in his films. Pacific Rim has soul. Avengers got soul. Hell, Quantum of Solace has more soul than a Bay film.

Exactly. It's the degree of sheer contempt for his audience that gets me. Pacific Rim is a perfect comparison to Bay's work. Pacific Rim is basically giant robots vs. giant monsters duking it out. It's live-action (and CGI) Voltron with a bit of post-apocalyptic cross-dimensional fun thrown in. It is clearly NOT meant to be taken all that seriously.

And yet, it doesn't seem to hate its audience the way Michael Bay seems to hate his. It's inclusive rather than exploitative. Del Toro seems to want you to come along and enjoy the fun with him, whereas Bay seems to want to just take your money because you're a ****ing chimp in his eyes. I can see where people would see evidence of that in the design of the turtles.

Iirc the only reason the one scene from the island was reused was due to the injury that occurred when trying to film the original scene.

"You guys want racist robot Hotwheels, sweaty hot women that add nothing to the plot, and fart jokes crammed down your stupid fat lazy throats for 2 hours?! Well I'll give you just that!"

- Michael Bay

I just read about the accident. Seems worse that the extra that was injured is pursuing a lawsuit and Paramount refused to pay up...

Believe me I'm no hard core Turtle fan, but I did love me some '80s figures and cartoons when I was a kid. And the original motion picture holds a special place in my heart but they have such a Perfect opportunity to go back to the roots of the original comics and make something fantastic for the original generation now that we're adults and it seems like they're just ****ting all over it. Producer or not, the fact that Bay's name is attached to this is an automatic NO from me. The maquettes look like they are trying a new angle but it's still the wrong angle. Something like this would have been so much better, while keeping to the Original Eastman characters.
