Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

Has anyone here ever read the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle's by Eastman and laird before it was acquired by viacom? It was really, really dark. Haven't read the series since IDW acquired the rights to make new comics.

to be honest, there where only about 20 issues worth reading in the mirage first run. The rest where 'guest artists'. I like what IDW is doing with the series. The new TV show is far too goofy for my tastes, after being exposed to the wonderful 4kids show. They kind of lost me with the mikey dirty underwear joke and the zitt episode. ewwww..

I love the turtles with all my heart and seeing these designs breaks my soul.

thank you.... I can't believe how many people love these designs. Shredder especially.
Someone else said the turtles reminded them of the Zuili (sp) comics from Mirage V1. I didn't care for those, either.

I'm not all that fond of the mouths on the turtles but they look interesting otherwise. Shredder's too busy looking, he looks like a transformer with all that crap on his armor. What happened to a nice simple design?

EXACTLY. Just because you CAN go all out with detail now that you have a budget, doesn't mean you HAVE TO. they could do all kinds of cool things with a nice, simple costume. Movie one costume still works the best, IMHO.

It is still just concept art guys.

I made a few very subtle tweaks to get them more to my personal liking:

A bit more subdued colors. Changed the lips slightly. More angry. And I like white eyes, though it probably wouldn't translate to live action.

I definitely like your mods. The lips are still just an atrocity.

I am also a HUGE TMNT fan and I just can't get past some of the crap they messed up on those faces. They don't need to be re-invented. They just need to be reintroduced with some great storylines. Don't try and fix what isn't broken!

Isolated Leonardo, fixed perspective/proportions, color corrected. Tweaked his face, more subtle lips, less of a snout and smaller chin. Added swords. I'm actually really liking it now!

We need a good "Nope" gif here, stat.

Oh, I get it, the smart one has glasses and the cool one gets shades. Subtle Mr. Bay, you tricky devil.

Let's all recall the gold toothed Klanbot in Transformers 2 and agree that this has zero chance of not being awful.

I will seriously stop being friends with anybody that I know that goes to see this movie. Dead serious.

Shredder looks like an update of the alien that was shredder in Turtles Forever wearing a power suit. This suit is powered by 100 percent pure Bay suckage.

I kind of like the turtle designs from what I've seen. Not horrible. A few observations:

- We still haven't seen any good, clear shots of them. The banner looks like it's concept art or something they are using on toy packaging.

- Shredder is kind of "meh" to me. I can't say any particular version looks better than this because he's always been ridiculous looking. From his sparkly purple jumpsuit in the original movies to his roided out football player getup from the original cartoon to the equally absurd CG 'toon iteration. It looks like they've embraced the absurdity and ran with it.
He looks like he's wearing an Elysium-ish power suit, so this is probably a version he wears to battle or something.

- I really love the junky samurai armor. It's so perfect and absolutely what I would expect. These are isolated, lonely, socially backward teenagers who are obsessed with feudal Japan. Of course they would have home made Samurai costumes, especially Leonardo. And it looks like something I would have made, and I like that.

- I like the clothes. I always found their nakedness kind of odd. The latest issue of the comic has Mikey writing a letter to a friend, and his belt and knee / elbow pads are on the floor around him. The artwork is pretty but I was kind of jarred when I thought "he's sitting there naked right now." Well, he just took off his belt and knee pads. He's no more naked than he ever is.
And watch the "scientifically accurate ninja turtles" video to see why they need loincloths at the very least. *shudder*

- I don't like the shades. Raph's or Mikey's. I understand why they're there (living in the sewer then going topside can't be easy on the eyes) but I still hate it.

- I do not like the turtle-tat's on Mikey or Leonardo.

- Hate Mikey's hoodie. Hate Mikey's shell necklace.

- I find it strange they have these creepy human faces but they don't look anything like the actors. What's the point then? Maybe the finished product will look better.

The Turtles have been re-invented almost every time they appear.

The Original comic book Turtles look different from the cartoon Turtles, who look different from the movies, who look different from the other tv show, who look different from the OTHER tv show, who look different from the OTHER movie....

Their basic look has always remained. And that basic look has been preserved in this new movie, too.

While I don't hate the new look Turtles I'm not in love with the designs either. They seem to match their personalities as we've all become familiar with but perhaps in the most stereotypical way possible. They seem reminiscent of fan art or those alternative toys they tend to sell alongside the regular figures.

Designs these days seem to have more and more detail (perhaps too much detail) to satisfy some notion that all movies end up in Full HD at home or something but I think it takes away from the designs instead of adding anything. Also they seem rather hulking and monstrous instead of the 5-foot little ninjas we remember.

As for Shredder... there's no elegance to him at all.

As always, I'm hopeful but hesitant...

I get that, but with the turtles there has always been a certain code to their Character, like Mikey and Donnie, I don't recognise them.I miss the needed facial expression.Raph and Leo I can live with.I'm afraid that Bay might step away from the code, turning them into something else .......reinventing them.

I'm not really sure what you mean when you refer to a "code" or facial expressions.

I certainly don't need Mikey to go around smiling like a maniac all the time. What facial expression is associated with Donnie?! Their characters seem instantly recognisable from these new still images alone.

These "reinventions" seem positively tame when you think of what people imagined Bay would do with them.

Donnie-The Scientist.......mmmm, more like a Nerd wannabee with the goggles on, don't like it....loose them.
Mikey-The Hipster........that face suggests otherwise, he's got an IceT thing going on there, which doesn't suit him.
Raph-The guy with the mean attitude, Ican see that happening here, not bad on that front
Leo-The leader, not bad either.

The point is they look too massive, but looking at Leo's solo picture, I could get into that....Raph could be fine enough, but Mikey and Donnie looking like that, mmmmm:unsure

Just like with the transformers for instance, they were made too technical in the life-action movies, with all the insides showing, too chaotic , too unrecognizable, to much focus on the humanparts. Why can't Bay keep to the code, why the reinvention? I see that happening with the turtles too in a way.

Don't get me started on Shredhead, he looks too Mechanical, even Vader has more life going for him than this guy, Bay-hole just wants to show-off , that's the point isn't it.

Shredder's look reminds me of Michael Bay's Megatron. Just a lot of evil grinning metal. His whole outfit doesn't look very sharp either.

I'm not really feeling shredder based off the concept renderings, but maybe he will turn out alright on the big screen. Here is a composite of 2 images cleaned up a bit.
