I thought it was a good film, not great but good. A Dark rendition of ET where ET gets mad and eats the people. :lol
I thought it shined in the plot with the kids making the film and catching the ambiance of the late 70's, extremely Spielbergish.
The plot with the alien was a bit more convoluted, you did not really get to see much until the end and the ending left too many loose ends with the alien. The body count issue and the towns folk for one thing, how the military handles it afterwards, what was the real mentality at the end of the alien, is the world going to get invaded now by hungry aliens, or Earth get the reputation for creating an intergalactic incident or crazy alien, what really was the direction of the mental link at the end?
Being a kid that grew up in the 70's, it was a good film, a super popcorn film but the substance other than the experience of the kids was lacking. Spielberg always tied everything together, Abrahms did not, a lot of assumption and no answers.
I liked it very much, I may get a copy at some point, but its not a film that falls into a all time favorite ranking that I will want to watch over and over again. More on the campy and fun feel with a bit of darkness to it.
