Is she really reading her lines off of cue cards?

She's one of the few things I like about this show actually. I don't find her deliveries flat, I find them unaffected, unforced. That is, she isn't being dramatic or acting-y. I find it very realistic. Granted, it might not blend well with the scenery chewers on set.

I just watched the first four episodes of ST:Discovery. I've read a lot of mixed messages about this season, though I'd say it tended to sway more towards the positive. I was quite hopeful and looked forward to the season despite the mess of season 1.

I'll preface my upcoming comments with that I'm a huge Star Trek fan. I look forward to an evolution of the shows and filming styles. I don't expect things to look or feel like the 60's, 80's or 90's. My wife likes Star Trek though is far more forgiving than I am.

I am just stunned by this season. I literally sat through the episodes with my mouth agape, and more than once exclaimed: Just get the **** on with it!

What the hell is going on here? There are many contemporary shows that don't have this odd format. ACTION ACTION ACTION ACTION- POINTLESS ACTION... Slllllllooooooooooooowwwwwww drawn out useless dialogues. ACTION ACTION ACTION ACTION ACTION.... Sloooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwww talking actor.

Who is writing Tilley's character? Why? Just why? My wife more than once would say how inappropriate she's acting, alien influence or not. The silly incredibly juvenile comments she makes and she's the YOUNGEST candidate to the command training programme? Are they ******* serious? They've actually made young Wesley Crusher's character likable some how, compared to her. This is remarkable.

And I am NOT body shaming, but when people are unfit, they are unhealthy. And there is NO ******* way she was able to win that race. Especially after stopping for that conversation.

Michael Burnham.... I don't know if the actress only has once emote: head ******, deer in headlights, distraught wide eyed, or she's being directed to act like that. But that's ALL She does so far. And slow impassioned speaking for EVERYTHING. Like a teenager caught in constant drama. I have no idea who her character is supposed to be relate-able to. How is SHE the ******* focal character? My wife can't stand her. She's sitting there sighing whenever Michael opens her mouth.

The dialogue... Such long winded wasted conversations about nothing to carry the story along. Nothing remotely interesting or witty... My far more patient wife just blurted out OMG--- come on, during the conversation between Suru and Michael. We both like Suru's character, but these long forced back stories to make sure we get the prologue to what's about to happen, is just so forced.

More space clouds, eh? So many space clouds. It's remarkable. Colourful space clouds. Now don't get me wrong, the CGI is phenomenal. I'm loving the technical visuals. But here's another space cloud... Oh, and some space pods with super fast spiny parts and a super long winded pointless to the story scene of flying through asteroids to show us what a super hero Michael is.

Reno... I. am. a. robot. I. have. no. tonal. inflection. my. humour. is. all. rude. and. emo. look. how. super. smart. I. am. robot. I. buck. the. rules. I. am. cool. but. too. cool. to. say. it. I have no clue why they put this character in. In fact, the ENTIRE ******* nonsense of finding the Hiwatha, and then grabbing a super gravity rock, that just by coincidence happens to be the very thing that helps them save an entire forced into the story lost human colony, was HORRIBLY conceived.

Everything is so incredibly forced. New Eden could have been a great episode, but the found human colony wasn't even the actual focal point of that episode. It was remarkable how they managed to write that yet make it about just slowly moving along the Red Angel story line.

Search for Spock. So the Red Angels that are leading us to these aliens that were involved with humans some how, is somehow related to Spock and his psychic connection that is driving him mad for some reason. But the arc is based on so much teasing, that it feels like I'm watching LOST, and I LOST interest in LOST really fast due to the constant tease about things, without actually providing a story.

Anyway, if you like ST: Discovery, I have no issue with that. Enjoy the show. But this is NOT Star Trek. It's Battlestar Galactica mixed in with Teen Angst dramatic speeches, and pointless action scenes geared to people with ADHD.

And yes, not every TNG, Enterprise, DS9 or TOS episode was perfect. Far from it. They pumped out over 20, 45 minute episodes a season. But this is like 10-13 episodes and THIS is the best they can come up with? There's no time for filler **** in a 10-13 episode season. I also expect more from contemporary writing and production. I expect it to be better. To have the benefit of hindsight. Not to just throw **** at a fan and expect people to love having their faces covered in it, like some twisted take on bukake.

Oh- can they turn up the ******* lights in these ships? Is there something wrong with them? Or is everything meant to specifically reflect the moody gen Xer mood?

I think I'm pissed because I was looking forward to this season, and was so let down. Clearly their target audience isn't Star Trek fans. It's not. Not even remotely. You may happen to be a Star Trek fan who likes this series, but it's not directed to you. I don't know who it's directed at any more.

I'm really glad I didn't waste my money this season on this even if it was for only $10 a month or $10 to binge watch the whole season.

Yep. Funny thing is, it's always the same group coming back for another bite.

Don’t get me wrong. I WANT Discovery to succeed, as a fan. Therefore, I have kept tuning in, hoping it’s going to get better (and it objectively isn’t, with terrible storytelling and very unlikeable characters).

To take the analogy further, I keep hoping I’m going to bite into that sandwich and find the simple fresh ingredients that should be there, only to be profoundly disappointed each time. Will I continue showing up to give it a try? Maybe, but after a while, it would be insanity to keep showing up and expecting a different result.

It’s really too bad; such a wasted opportunity. Sometimes, things have to get worse before they get better, I suppose.

First time commenting on Discovery, so I'll try to not to be too lengthy in my comments...
I keep watching this series because, well it's Star Trek and (generally) I like Trek. But there's a lot I don't like about it. Here's some things I don't like about the series as a whole thus far:
  • As others here have said, I find Michael and other characters unlikable. Hard to build a series on that.
  • Not developing any characters of the bridge crew seems lazy. If they're going to try to make them look unique but fail to provide any kind of character to go with those looks, why bother?
  • Michael's backstory with her "relation" to Spock is forced. It tries to give her character depth by tying it to another, beloved character that has a strong history and character development. Burnham's backstory is unearned.
  • I don't think Michelle Yeoh is a good actress. Maybe it's the role, but I since she's essentially played two different characters on this show, with different motivations and character traits, I feel like I should've seen something in her performances on STD that would make me understand why so many people seem to think she's even a capable actress, much less a great one. Her "evil twin" characterization is hackneyed. Why can't actors portray "bad" characters like real humans? I'm pretty sure real life despots and dictators don't all relish being evil and do it with an evil little grin.
  • The Klingons have never been my favorites, but these Klingons are unbearable to watch. I simply don't care about them on STD. The writing and new character design seem to try to make them even more scary and dangerous than previous iterations of the characters, but they just come across as flat, one-dimensional characters.
Ok, now some thoughts on recent episodes:
  • Season two has been better for me, not great, but better. I like Pike, the character and the actor playing him. I would much rather see a series built around him than Discovery. I'm hoping Rebecca Romijn's brief part as the nameless "Number One" was more than just a cameo. I've always thought she was a better actress than she gets credit for, and always seemed underused. Maybe a 1701 pre-Kirk series is indeed being set up.
  • Search for Spock - who cares at this point? We've already seen a different actor play Spock, it's not new, so the drawn out reveal can only work against them. They're building Spock up for a huge fall. They've tried to retcon his character with STD, trying to make it seem like there's a hidden past to the character, which in my opinion is just lazy storytelling. If you can't find a way to write an existing character (that you didn't create) interesting without changing the character, then perhaps you should just stay away altogether.
  • Speaking of unlikable characters, please let this be the end of May/fungus girl/imaginary friend. I know the character wasn't really supposed to be likable, but holy hell is she annoying. I hate her voice, it's like fingernails on a chalkboard. I'm not referring to her accent, lest you think I'm just racist (though I find myself taken out of the episodes because I'm trying to figure out where she's from. Jamaica? I suppose it doesn't/shouldn't matter, but it still is distracting to me).
  • Section 31 - nope. Not interested. And a note for costumer/designers: black leather is a tired trope for making people look "badass." Oh, and the reveal that they have TNG era style communicator badges? Thumbs down. Obviously trying to set up something, possible about time travel, but just feels like another "hey wouldn't this be cool" thing the writers threw in.
Alright I've rambled/ranted for way too long. Congrats if you made it this far, thanks for reading!

Episode 6: The Discovery gang breaks the Prime Directive in a HUGE manner. I was shaking my head when that happened.

And apparently now someone can transport off ship during red alert.
