For me, I realize that some of these long running franchises' success or failure comes down to one thing - the writing. My favorite Star Trek is TNG, and specifically, the episodes that Ronald D. Moore wrote and/or was executive story editor. Which is why I enjoyed other projects of his - BSG, For All Mankind. As another example, I loved The Simpsons when Conan O'Brien was a writer, then was made a producer. The voices and look of the series stay (largely) the same, but the writing is what makes it good. When other people took over, I didn't like it as much, so I stopped watching.
I'm not saying there can't be more "good" Trek made, but just highlighting that the real reason the shows were good was the writing and creative force behind it. The studios keep trying to use nostalgia to bait us into watching new Trek, not fully understanding the writing, and the people who created it were the reason for it's success.
