Star Lord helmet AND accessories!!! by Helagak!

I was looking into the Pepakura method, since I have experience but then I remembered there's a local 3D printer...

So, if I was going to outsource this as someone who's never done any 3D printing, what should I do?

And how much filament did a mask take, for price-wise?

hey guys, so again i have to ask for someone to convert the files for me cause i'm a mac user. is anyone willing to do that, pretty please? thanks in advance! :)

I'm not much an expert with foam yet, but have a half decent star lord helmet done. the pictures ive seen on these finished projects are amazing. using the unfold files. is this simply print everything out on paper and transfer to foam?

for the foam unfold, do you simply print to paper and transfer to the foam? and how do you know what size foam to use. im not seeing that on the pdo.

Print it on paper (you don't need to print both the "left" and "right" sides, since you can just print one and flip it over to trace it on the foam). Most people use floor mat foam - either the "puzzle piece" squares or a large roll. As long as it has one smooth side, you're good. You can use craft foam for the thinner details (I personally used it for the "mouth" pieces, since it was easier to cut breathing holes into it).

When you're sizing it for your head, add a bit of extra space to account for the fact that the foam is thicker than paper and therefore the inside of the helmet will end up a bit smaller than a paper version would (mine is slightly too small - I don't have space for electronics, whoops!).

Is there any way I can get measurements on the gun from the 3d file? Thinking of machining my own.

I'm printing on a Polar3D. 8" (round) x 6" high build area. Took about 2 hours. I accidentally broke the corner off while playing with it, but it's nothing some glue can't fix.
http://bit.ly/1lajF8n is my printer. I love it. $500 and it has a steel chassis and is ready to go out-of-the-box. I didn't want to waste time tinkering with a printer, I just wanted to print things.

I've decided I'm going to start my paper pep version next weekend (using the rescaling number here *crosses fingers*), but am also going to start getting ready to do a 3d print version--the library here has classes, including a jewelry-specific one, so I will possibly be trying for an orb prop. If it's the least bit successful, I'll post up whatever I used.

I'm so happy i found this :D i just saw the movie last week so i'm excited to get started on this soon.
I'm planning to build it out of foam and my only question is would it have room for glasses to fit under? like for everyone that's built it scaled to their head do you think you could fit a pair of glasses on under it? or would you need to make it a little bigger?

Thanks!

Warning for horrible tape mess!

I just wanted to show my helmet! It's the first time ever I do a project like this! My printer has been working for about 65 hours on this, plus some for failed prints. This is right off the printer, no clean up. That why the pieces don't fit perfect and it all looks weird. Next step would obviously be to sand the parts down to fit.

I tried using wood filler to smooth it out but I'm just horrible at applying that stuff, and this was even a smooth piece. Don't know how I will ever get it in to all the details. Also I get small cracks when I sand it. Next I will try skipping the wood filler and just use several coats of filler primer. Prime, sand, prime, sand and so on. I have had some success with that in the past.

After that I would love to try molding and casting it. I've never done anything like that before, but always wanted to try. Got some studying to do before I go at it though, haha!

The files are awesome and its amazing you are offering them for free! A big thank you Helagak!

I print on paper, cut it out, and then use a weak spray glue on the back of the paper, and glue it to the foam. I then cut around the paper and peel it off.

nice print.

how much filament did it take to print the hole mask? How much do you think it cost you to print it?
thanks keep up the good work. Cant wait to see the final product.

This is my foam mask so far, first time for me using foam and making a mask. Any tips on what to coat it with to help smooth it out?IMG_4812.JPG

Hey guys, first time poster, long time lurker.

Just spent the day in the shop working on my Star Lord blasters - coming along nicely. Should be done in time for Dragon Con, but looking unlikely I'll have the mask done. Still want to make one to complete the outfit, so any good suggestions for 3D printing one of these for us w/o a 3D printer? I'm familiar w/some of the sites like engineerables, but that would probably add up quickly.

Thanks y'all - looking forward to getting active in this community.

hello first time here. I really want to make a star lord mask and you seem to be the guy everyone turns to. so I followed the links and downloaded the files but I keep getting harmful alerts from my anti-virus. do I need a program to open it safely or did I download the wrong things from 4share? thank you for your time and hard work.

Its hard to estimate, but I would say about half a spool right now. I still have some small parts to print, but yeah. About half a spool. I print in a little bit more expensive PLA called Colorfabb, its very popular. Its on 750g spools. I live in Europe and order from Colorfabb them self and a spool cost 35 euro, so not considering shipping the helmet so far has cost my about 18 euros, or like 24 USD. If you used cheaper PLA you could get even lower.

Check out http://www.3dhubs.com/, if there is a printer close to you that's probably the cheapest way. It will still be really expensive though.

I'm new to this site, but I've printed out the patterns and hope to put them to foam tomorrow! For the love of God gents (and ladies) wish me luck!
