SPIDER GWEN Build (Pic Heavy)

Update: Angrily Sewing the Not-So-Great Print Anyway!

I haven't ever sewn stretch before (or really anything...), but winged it based on a fair amount of internet research on what to buy. Looked up the manual for my sewing machine; would have been 100% clueless without it.

So the tools here are:
1. Polyester thread
2. Brother EX-660 sewing machine (if that means anything?)
3. Walking foot (see below)
4. Stretch needle
5. This pattern guide from I have no idea where:

Sewing the Damn Thing

Looking pretty good despite the hiccups!
Are you going to be done by WonderCon? My sister and I will be there on Saturday. We should get some pics together if you're going to be there Saturday. Spider-man and Spider-Gwen.
Mine was also a first-time project for me and I created all my patterns from scratch. Believe you me, it's quite a task so kudos on all your work.
Looking forward to seeing this complete

That's mine from FOD. I have my other mask there for the colour comparison. Under lights it's burgundy and in the sun it's almost purple. Still gonna have at it and do my best for Anime North in May. I even tried to brighten it up.

Wow, that is pretty dark. Is there any method out there to lighten it? At least it has a kind of dark and serious thing going for it, that's pretty different!

Hey thanks! I will definitely be at Wondercon, I'll have to look for ya. I'll probably only be Gwen Saturday and Sunday, since I'd like to get more mileage out of my Ivysaur costume, lol

Update: 2nd Print
My reprint arrived today! Unfortunately, I still can't see most of the muscle pattern and a lot of the hexagonal patter is still missing. :cry
This print was 4 days late and still not right, even after consulting with their design team. Totally at a loss and pretty sure I won't finish in time for Wondercon now...

To be honest it came out way better than mine and it was all black. Keep in mind printers are **** at printing black, you got something good.

That definitely seems true given everyone's experiences posted here. Mine actually looks much better now because it is so incredibly tight that it breaks up the saturation a LOT. I'm just annoyed because they assured me they could accomplish the effect and I paid nearly full price ($20 off the second) for both.

I apologized to them that my expectations were a little unrealistic, and begged for a discount on the next print I'm ordering. But I do feel pretty bad for complaining, given everyone else's various results!

As a customer(/costumer) you have the right to (constructively) complain to them if you didn't get what you paid for.Nothing wrong with being assertive,or people would walk all over you every time you mean to accomplish something. You did well.
Looking forward to your updates :thumbsup

Yeah, seriously, you have every right to complain. Since they agreed the second time around they could print to your expectations, they should give you a free print if they failed to do as they said.

Question about zentai zipper types: does anyone know what the pro's and con's are from the "through-the-leg-entry" zipper, besides from being able to (un)zip yourself (up)?

Do you mean the U-zippers down the back and along the waist so you can step in? If so, zippers aren't mean to "curve" so there is an increased chance of snapping the zipper off the track, plus the overall length of the zipper is longer than a straight back zipper; now what does length matter? Zippers hamper the fabric's ability to stretch ('cause zippers don't stretch) so the more zipper you have, the more fabric you have affected negatively by it.

Glad I'm not even attempting a U-Zipper. Although I am going to try out the wrist zippers. Worried about whether those are going to be visible given the arms on mine are white...also, no idea how to zipper... TO THE INTERNET!

this looks great!! i really hope its all ready by wondercon. my wife and i will be there on sunday as Black Cat and Superior, hopefully we will see you there and can get a group photo :)

I'll definitely be there! Probably hood up all day Saturday and hood down on Sunday (so i can actually see when I buy things). Hoping to get many a group spidey picture! I'll be the Gwen that's a mere 5'0" lol

Update: Sewing the Gloves/Arms

I have sewn the gloves and arms. The gloves are definitely the hardest part. I did one with an attached thumb, per my print's design. I found it to be more trouble than it's worth with stretch fabric, so the other hand I did with the thumb attached. I've also attached the arms, shoulder, and neck. Would have done the zipper if I didn't totally break it (shed a single tear for that one) and now I have to get a new one.

GLOVES
1. I traced out my hand with a Mark-B-Gone marker that dissolves in water, super useful!
2. Baste like your life depends on it.
3. Tested my hand it the basting. I found that the glove will look awful if the finger is wider than its opening, so try to taper it down toward the finger tip.
4. I found it was easiest to sew from the side of fingertip to the joint, switching from overlock-stretch to a straight stitch as a got to the joint.
5. Then I went back and did a round seam on each fingertip.
6. Then I tried it on again. Sewing the joint moved where my fingers ended, so I marked the ends with my marker, cut where needed, and sewed the fingertips again.
(sewing along the edges separately was helpful, since it didn't ruin my stitch when I cut the fingertips off for adjustment)
7. Fitting also helped show where my seams were too close to the edge and left holes.
8. I went over my seams again just because my suit is so small and tight that I know I'm gonna have a lot of tension in my fingertips.

9. That extra thumb is a pain in the a** to sew. It's helpful and looks really nice, but took me forever to figure out (novice sewer). You have to fit both the thumb length and your palm width for it to sit correctly and I abandoned it for my left glove.
10. I only chose to do it this way because lycra is stretchy. I think it looks much cleaner this way and will design my next print for it.
11. I also decided I didn't need wrist zippers since I can basically scrunch my hands to the size of my wrists.

ARMS

1. So you'll see there are sharp points where you cut and attach the end of the arm to the palm. I did that first.
2. Then I actually started sewing at the armpit because that's where my webbing is, and I needed that to line up. Pretty much nailed that!
3. I didn't take pictures of attaching the arms to the body, but it's pretty self-explanatory. I lined up the armpit stitch to the body's side-stitch and sewed outward from each side. Just baste well and double check before accidentally sewing the wrong arm to the wrong damn side...

SHOULDERS

1. So the shoulders are also really easy. I turned my print into a detached mask, so I'm not sure how construction works if it's attached, but I assume similarly.
2. Started with the bottom short piece and stretched slightly while basting because mine was a little shy of being wide enough.
3. Then I basted and sewed the side parts, going from the top of the neck down to the shoulder (I found this helps make a sharp corner better)
4. I'll add a close-up of the shoulders later. Here is what I have so far, though it will look like it fits better when I get a zipper in there!

I wish I didn't have work tomorrow, since there is SO much left to do and I have no idea how to do the hood pretty much, lol.

Everything is looking so great! You're going to finish the left foot soon right? (ocd talking)
how comfortable do you find the gloves after the stitch?

Thanks for the support everyone! These forums have helped a LOT so I owe you guys mucho on this one!

Yeah, that has annoyed me too in these pictures, haha. I'll do the back zipper, the feet, and hopefully the hood tonight! I think I'm going to get an invisible zipper foot attachment. I have some loafers to tear apart for the feet. The hood I have NO idea how I'm going to attach cleanly, lol wish me luck!
